Mapo is so gracious to fail purposely to give us some fun contents. Obviously he knew from the start that he had to dodge every attack and attack in the windows of opportunity
NKG is like an elaborate dance. You're thrown against an expert dancer and you're expected to keep up, with just the knowledge of the basics (Normal Grimm). However, one rapidly improves, the fight is designed to train yourself to play it in auto pilot , so when you see the teller of each attack, you are making the appropriate movement. Because of this, NKG also becomes one of the easiest bosses to defeat hitless proportional to its normal fight.
Spoilers below: When doing Radiant statues, Troupe Master Grimm took me at least twice as long as NKG, which was definitely a little humbling, considering it's the "easier" boss.
This is why we in the Hollow Knight community are fiendishly hoping for Silksong news. The feeling this game gives you when you absolutely MASTER a boss is like injecting dopamine directly into your brain hole.
I just wanted to thank you, Chris, if you'll allow me, for bringing us content. It's good to have a brief moment of respite during a time of immense grief induced by the loss of a family member. I haven't really been able to watch anything else during these two days ever since, I've just had the TV on for no good reason, but this playthrough is lighthearted enough that having it pop up in my inbox encouraged me to watch something. Maybe one day as I return to working life and have a stabile income, I'll be able to give proper thanks in the form of a Patreon donation or something. For now, though, my words will have to suffice. @@Myrskylintu my condolences... as someone who has lost a father, an uncle and a grandma within the last 8 months, i can confirm that content like this really helps to let the brain idle for a bit, but i should also warn you that it does not work towards progressing with the grieving process.. my advice is to find a healthy balance of processing and distraction because from my personal experience, it is all to easy to slip into depression
A beautiful boss fight. The perfect interplay of reaction, execution, and great audio to boot. Not to mention the best setting in the whole game. The Nightmare King Grimm fight is okay too.
I love how at the beginning you really thought this boss will be too hard and then every few attempts you actually made progress untill victory, trademark of a well-made challenging boss

It's funny how everyone always thinks the part where Grimm turns into a swarm of bats is a sign that they've progressed in the fight, when it's actually the pufferfish attack (which occurs when he's at 75, 50, and 25 percent health). So when Mapo says he feels good when the bat swarm occurs before the pufferfish because he thinks he's killing him faster, it's actually the other way around.
@@coffeedude Probably the same stagger mechanic as most bosses, which is when you hit them a certain number of times in a period of time. It's actually a common misconception that staggers are related to the bosses' health at all. With a few exceptions (False Knight/Failer Champion, Radiance) bosses being stunned for a moment is actually no indication of their health at all.

Everyone's first reaction to Salubra's Blessing is excellent. =) When you're talking about the Nightmare King Gromm fight potentially being a sign of things to come in the next dlc, I'll just say that, while it seems like you enjoy pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to fully complete challenges, make sure you know your limits with that. Godmaster can get absurdly rough, especially certain aspects of it are made with a VERY specific player mindset in mind. Dance pad controls NKG fight would be quite a sight to see. Considering the pace and precision required, it would be utterly absurd, but I bet people have tried. Major congrats on the win! Learning to dance with the Nightmare King is quite the challenge, but so very rewarding.
"I think that this wasn't even the last one, so if this is a sign of what's to come-" Well they made a bold choice naming that other DLC something as imposing as 'Godmaster', so surely it's all smooth sailing from here
Fun fact for those who don't know : Completing the ritual adoes in fact kill Grimm, but the cycle will never end because he will be replaced by his child who will also die in a future ritual. That means the Grimmchild will grow up one day to become the new Master of the Troupe.
You should read the NKG (Nightmare king Grimm) entry in the hunters journal. I would also recommend doing whatever you have left to do before going to the dream *thing* you unlocked with a simple key.

Yet another day goes by when Mapo defeats a boss and then forgets to look at the journal... not that I can really blame you, this is by far one of the most challenging and fun bosses in a game I've ever fought and I'm glad to see that you seem to agree.
Always down for any and all hollow knight content! Same for your elden ring gameplay, it'll be great to be able to see you react to silksong the same time as we all play it for the first time!
I also recommend you note down all the missing enemies in Hunter's Journal and complete the task. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what will happen.
All jokes aside, hollow knight is basically a rhythm game at its core, and this fight just pulls back the curtain a bit more to make it more obvious. Boss fights, platforming, path of pain....when you hit the right rhythm with any of them, you SING. Or dance. Or insert literally any rhythm metaphor. The game is so addicting in the same way that people love singing and dancing. It hits at something primal and satisfying.
Man it's so interesting watching you progress and learn the fight. Just watching you learn the moves of the dance is so fun. I still have NKG to do myself and this has given me that motivation. Well done Mapo! Also glad to witness the formation of the multiverse haha

Nightmare King Grimm is an awesome boss fight because more than any other it starts off with you thinking "there's no fucking way, this is impossible" and by the end you can do it almost flawlessly. It really makes you feel your growth!
Congrats. NKG was an absolute wall in my playthrough, even now he's one of the few bosses that still gives me trouble. That first time you kill him is such a rush of dopamine, I'm looking forward to your journey to max %.
The Best Strategy for dreamfights is to collect all the lifeblood from all the lifeblood locations, return to the dreamfight, and you will be able to start that dreamfight with all that lifeblood every time.
My first play through years ago, I stopped playing after the first Grimm fight and just before the radiance. I don’t remember why I stopped, I think I just wanted to move on to a different game and forgot about it. But after seeing your first few episodes, I decided to go back though a second time on a different save. I flew through the game, challenges became trivial, challenges I found difficult in the past were overestimated. I was even able to do the flower quest. I surprised myself with how familiar I was with the game, even bosses that I loathed fell with a good few tries instead of a hundred. Then the biggest challenge of my play through, nightmare Grimm. It took me hours, and with some fake encouragement from my brother, I won. After I moved on to the radiance and cut her down in one go. Grimm is an amazing boss fight and the biggest challenge I’ve ever dared to fight. I hope you do try out the godhome dlc and become a more daring player. P.s I loved watching your journey through hollow knight

"you know those people who beat games with dance pads" Fun fact: Skurry, a speed and challenge runner in the community, has actually done two attempts at beating Hollow Knight with a dance pad (these were special streams and not endeavors at a serious category). They got stuck at Mantis Village on their first attempt, but after a rethink of key bindings got into the City of Tears, iirc.
Something interesting about the NKG fight which my brother told me when I was first trying to beat it (and I think it's true of Troupe Master as well?) is that he does the pufferfish attack at 75%, 50%, and 25% remaining HP. So it's a decent way of gauging your process.

Minor spoilers on completion percentage. Adding extra lines to hide it in case you don’t want to know the maximum. You are almost there. The maximum amount of completion is 112%.
I remember the first time I fought Flukemarm I found a glitch that made me completely invincible. I have no idea how it happened and I was never able to recreate it
Yesssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!, the final charms and NKG in one episode. You also finally found Flukemarm and got kissed by Salubra LMAO. Very little to do left except the Godmaster dlc. Also you should try to use a charm over and over that cost more spaces then you have and also try to dream nail enemies when low or out of soul. BTW you have a different charm then Grimmchild on your main save.
Well since Divine is just in a different universe at this point, and not really part of your original playthrough, I feel the need to say that there is more to Divine than you think. Idk of you figured it out already.
I do suggest that you do a second playthrough for a few OTHER decisions that have multiple endings; particularly choices that have achievements tied to them.
I mean, it doesn't really matter if he has unbreakable charms or not. The only things left for him to do are in a dream, where fragile charms can't break.

The feeling after beating NKG is similar to beating Malenia in my opinion. I know she has some BS mechanics, but once you get the hang of it, it's a like a dance and once you get it down it's so rewarding. Same with Grimm. Incredible boss design and the OST slaps!
Honestly shape of unn cuts the difficulty of NKG in half by itself. Thats how I was able to beat him in the end. Still have to learn the boss but it makes it way easier.
Haven't finished the video yet but you said yourself you want to play from the beginning again just to see everything in context and that would also give you a chance to explore different side-story options like zote, nailsmtih, grimm troupe, etc. You already saw grimm troupe but there are still other reasons to replay the game, and I'd tag along if you did. Nothing else to do until Silksong arrives!
Just a quick piece of advice, you should use carefree melody as it is one of the best charms. it has a small chance to negate damage and the chance increases every time it doesn't.

Yesssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!, the final charms and NKG in one episode. You also finally found Flukemarm and got kissed by Salubra LMAO. Very little to do left except the Godmaster dlc.
Also you should try to use a charm over and over that cost more spaces then you have and also try to dream nail enemies when low or out of soul.
BTW you have a different charm then Grimmchild on your main save.

Divine leaving is bad but grimmchild is so bad, whereas carefree melody is not, there’s your advantage
The feeling after beating NKG is similar to beating Malenia in my opinion. I know she has some BS mechanics, but once you get the hang of it, it's a like a dance and once you get it down it's so rewarding. Same with Grimm. Incredible boss design and the OST slaps!

Honestly shape of unn cuts the difficulty of NKG in half by itself. Thats how I was able to beat him in the end. Still have to learn the boss but it makes it way easier.
Also, the completed Grimmchild charm is REALLY strong.

Haven't finished the video yet but you said yourself you want to play from the beginning again just to see everything in context and that would also give you a chance to explore different side-story options like zote, nailsmtih, grimm troupe, etc. You already saw grimm troupe but there are still other reasons to replay the game, and I'd tag along if you did. Nothing else to do until Silksong arrives!

Just a quick piece of advice, you should use carefree melody as it is one of the best charms. it has a small chance to negate damage and the chance increases every time it doesn't.
