the constant charm stench coming from the bug constantly for a couple of episodes now really well reflects mapo commitment to discover everything in the game at this point lol. no time to rest, no time for a bath, need to exploreee
My thing was his literal desire to not dodge any attacks. I don’t know whats up with him but his addiction to the quick slash has melted his brain into dash towards enemy and spam attacks to win. Definitely didn’t feel like he was trying to learn the battle properly
Yeah, that's the downside of NKG being a second, harder full-screen-name boss. It's an amazing fight, but it suddenly radiance isn't so tough in comparison.
Im so happy you went back to finish the grimm ritual. Your reaction to the nightmare king grimm screen and music was so awsome i had a giant smile on my facd!
Grimm took me more attempts than Radiance and felt overwhelming but as I learned the deadly dance he became my favorite fight which I can do flawlessly while the Radiance always feels like I'm destined to take damage as I battle the random chaos.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, Radiance is kinda easy, NKG and the *other two* (and markoth, but fuck him) are the real deal when it comes to difficulty.
To me it's my least favorite fight. I think it's the only boss that has an attack that takes a while and makes him invulnerable. That takes the choice from you to play either defensively, or aggressively and take changes - you can only play defensively.
So the thing about the grub father, there are insects that have to eat their young in order for them to undergo metamorphosis into their next stage of life, and once you get the grubberfly's elegy charm, you get an achievement called metamorphosis

First time I beat the game I left this and mighty zote alone. Watching Mapo play got me the will to try the game again. I've beat Steel Soul and it was so much easier this time that I finally got to beat them and now only one achievement to go. So I believe he also can do it, but might need some time :)
The five stages of NKG 1) Omg the music this is awesome! 2) So hard!! Two damage? This fight sucks 3) Omg I'm dodging!! 4) I....can....win... I hate this fight 5) this is the best boss of the game, the double damage forces you to dodge, and the fight itself becomes a perfectly choreographed dance. It's beautiful. Too bad this isn't the main savefile.
The music is the reason I didn't mind getting curbstomped for days. I remember shouting to my wife "MY BRAIN IS JUST TOO SLOW FOR THIS" NKG was actually my breaking point for a while. I gave up for like... a year, and finally came back and beat it. Now I can beat it like 85% of the time. Such an awesome fight.
The hard choice is to me what makes the DLC so beautiful. You fell for the cliche that breaking off from the system is *always* the right thing to do. But then you had regrets, for what might have been. Is there any proof the ritual is bad, truly evil? Just because one bug doesn't find fulfillment in it, does that make it morally sinister? He sees imprisonment in the pattern, yet, though cheery, he loses his memories, a swathe of his life, upon their banishment. Did he have the whole story? There are certain darknesses to it, yet also, does it not stand to reason that a dead kingdom would be better off with its nightmares safely harvested? Is friendship with little Grimmchild worth the cost of admission, worth keeping this scarlet gypsy caravan around? There are downsides to banishing them, just as there are downsides to keeping their cycle in motion. This conversation is why I love this part of the game.
Nightmare King Grimm fight is so good, it took me 3 days of training to beat him, but the rhythm of the dance is so good that when I booted the game after 2 years I beat him on second try, the muscle memory just returned. Amazing how well designed this battle (and mantis lords) is.
It's funny how one's tempted to shout combat instructions at the screen, when Mapo still succeeds his way. He basically tanked TMG's every single attack and still turned it into victory.
NKG is well worth the save file black magic, and I'm so glad you went out of your way to do it yourself instead of just watching a video of someone else doing it. That feeling of absolute helplessness against what is the hardest boss you've found (so far :P) is a part of the experience. Trying new charms is totally normal for this fight because you feel like what you have isn't working, and it leads to some fun experimentation with strategies that you'd never think of otherwise. It took me a long time to figure out NKG, and now I love that fight so much.
I found Grimm early on on my first playthrough and hadn't even discovered the Distant Village, so I got the nearest flames. This is the first time outside of lore videos that I have actually seen how this decision plays out.
Think about it! The achievement for getting all grubs is "Metamorphosis". The grubdad didn't eat them because he was hungy, it's likely that's their life cycle and they'll change into beautiful Grubberflies. What you probably shouldn't think too much about is that they'll probably eat their way out of their father's rotting, decaying corpse, so... Yeah maybe don't think about that too much
I actually really like that some bosses do double damage. Just because it forces me to actually learn their moves rather than brute force a lot of the fight, spamming attack while getting hit, I think you will come around to it too once u beat it
as much as I enjoy each episode and am excited for new ones, I've now started to dread the post-hollow knight blues, this time by association... I've been just telling myself that he hasn't done 'this' and 'that' and 'that other thing' yet, and as you're checking them off the list I'm starting to dread the impending end. the first blind playthrough is an amazing one-time experience and what comes second is seeing someone else enjoy the experience just as much.
so for everyone who is struggling with NKG: take it slow, if you try to rush dealing damage you will get hit. dodge, attack, dodge, attack, dodge, attack... for spikes: avoid fast movements and just stand between the spikes. for fire pillars: take small steps to move out of the way, ideally you'd move towards grimm so after the 4th pillar appears you can do some damage. if you are at the edge of the arena shade cloak through the pillar if you have to. for dash-uppercut: shade cloak through grimm, if you were standing still before the attack the fireballs wont hit you if you dont move after dashing. for fire bats: jump above the first one and shade cloak through the rest and get some hits on grimm. for dive-dash: jump towards grimm and double jump behind him, you can also pogo him instead of using wings. for pufferfish: just above the fireballs that are coming straight at you and dont dash as you might dash into grimm. he does the pufferfish attack at 75,50,25% of hp so you only have to get through it 3 times and you can tell how much hp he has left by this
"You're telling me that I missed out on THIS?? By being morally correct and trying to be a good person??" 😆 the instant and long pause just to fully bask in NK Grimm's theme is ABSOLUTELY worth everything you did to experience it 💖
One of these days Mapo will give up his hopes of finding healing windows during the attack phase of high level bosses and realize he just needs to concentrate on healing during the obvious windows. Who am I kidding? No he won't. And I love it.
2:20:35 the music got me too. I’d throw myself into the fight scowling but swaying 😂 “stupid f***ing stupid a** fight. But at least I’ve got this banger.” Lol
Man, I have to say what a fucking playthrough you've had. I found your channel through Subnautica and when I saw you had a Hollow Knight playthrough I knew I had to check it out. I was sad when you decided to banish the troupe because I knew you'd love the Nightmare King's banger theme. Glad you got to experience it! I'm sure you'll hear it more in the future episodes ;) You have the best playthrough of this game ever, hands down. Your curiosity and then dedication, seeing how you've grown to absolutely love the game has been incredible. Your Path of Pain and White Palace experience was incredible content. Thank you so much for playing this masterpiece!
I'm glad you went to back to get the Nightmare Grimm fight. It's absolutely brutal, but has one of the best soundtracks in the game and is one of my top 3 favorite fights. Once you learn the dance it is SO MUCH FUN! I think the alternate ending might be there to give a completion option to people who just can't beat the Nightmare King. I think you can though. I have faith. You've cleared the Trial of the Fool and the Path of Pain. You've got what it takes to beat the Nightmare! Loving the playthrough and I'm glad to see that you are too.
im super late to the party but i just wanna say how much i love these fights. first of all the music is exceptional, the troupe master grimm music is legitimately my favorite track in the game. i also just love to see the transition every player goes through, from dying in the first few moves to doing the fight almost hitless, in both troupe master and NKG. there is no luck victory in the grimm fights - once you understand them, they're extremely consistent. it's a dance, and once you know the steps, you don't fumble - but if you do, the whole thing gets thrown out of balance. it's really cool how one misstep can completely ruin the rhythm of these fights, and it's hard to get back on track once you're off-beat. but it's so rewarding once you have it figured out. i also really enjoy watching it because it so clearly favors the dodger, not the healer. this video is a great example of that. there are no good windows to heal except between phases, so the game takes away your net and forces you to learn the moves. i just enjoy watching it so so much, amazing addition to the game
This is my absolute favourite DLC for Hollow Knight, and it's really awesome seeing people play it for the first time! Thanks for all the amazing content Mapo!
The lengths you go to to not miss anything. That's why i love watching your stuff. You really put some serious effort into making it worth while. Great that you didn't miss the Nightmare King fight.
I love nkg, I think its genuinely the most balanced boss in any game where every hit feels like its your fault and going from wanting to uninstall the game to doing him hitless is still the most satisfying thing I've done in a game
While it is never _quite_ explained, the mix of the fact that you can still hear the Grubs and the description of Brubberflys Elegy (Gratitute of Grubs that will _move on the the next stage of their life) Implies that he didn't so much eat them as play cocoon for them
Mapo, this is one of my favorite let's plays of HK that I've ever seen! Trust me when I say at some point, you should watch mossbag's, "mostly complete lore of Hollow Knight". Hes the Vaati of Hollow knight so I think it fits haha!
I think double damage boss is conveying the thought that you shouldn't try to heal and just tank the damage, like you did in a Grimm fight. NKG fight wants the player to learn the dance perfectly and it's super satisfying in the end because there are no random factors (like for example in Radiance boss) only precision
@@lookalike4805 there are two strats where those couple of pixels don't matter at all. and I wouldn't call those few pixels random, because they are simply dependent on your position.
My brain chose the "don't heal, but do tank" strategy. That is, all lifeblood charms, giving me more attempts per attempt at perfecting Grimm's dance without feeling pressured to stop and heal.
That charm setup you had at the end of the video is really close to the build that I use all the time. I just swap out Strength for shaman stone. My first playthrough was a lot like yours, but now that I've played dozens of times I find that my favorite charm build is Dash Master, Sprint Master, Sharp Shadow, Nailmaster's Glory, Shaman Stone, and Spell Twister. Strangely enough, I think I forced myself to learn nail arts because of Nightmare King Grimm, so you probably had the right idea.
Eh, it's way too long and he makes unnecessary jokes. I personally find other lore videos alot better to listen to. It's not hard to professionally explain this game's story without taking over an hour lol One SUPER underrated example is The Lady of Lore. I wish people saw her version instead, she really makes it engaging and I found it easier to focus on. And it's all within just 26 minutes. Another one is by Rexicon, who explains it well in just 14 minutes
You are definitely capable of beating Nightmare King Grimm. I can beat him without taking any damage but I can't endure path of pain. If you did path of pain, you can do this, coz all this boss does is super easy to read, it just takes like an hour or two to beat him at first, but I know how overwhelming it feels at first, we all struggled and were confused.
@@kholo. Yes, but both are different things. And, practicing patiently will make you good at most things, be it cooking, or gaming. NKG is absolutely doable without taking a hit, as is Path of Pain. Disagree. I found them pretty early on the game, maybe a fourth of the way through. I do think the charms are expensive since they are very op. You wouldn't want beginning players to rock those
NKG one of my top 3 bosses in the game. I love it! Learning how to avoid damage, then how to deal damage without getting hit, and then to counter all of his attacks is such a good experience. The rhythm of fight is great!
NKG is hands down my favorite boss in the game and probably from any game i've played. It's so fast, has amazing music, and once you eventually figure it out, the fight is so fluid and fun. nightmare king grimm doing 2 damage is actually a good thing believe it or not, that means that to beat him at all you have to learn him properly, which also means that the difference between beating him and beating him flawlessly is very small, if you can beat him at all, you can also beat him on radiant difficulty, as a result he becomes one of the easiest bosses to beat on radiant. also hes pure execution and knowledge based, there is basically zero rng here, its all skill, which cant be said about some other bosses (*cough* markoth *cough* zote)
Do give the weaversong charm a go at some point, it's quite delightful in addition to being fairly useful. Every charm in the game has a purpose and some useful combinations with others, so if you find yourself wondering what a given charm is useful for, why not just try it and see what use you can find? Nice work on this one! I also banished the grimm troupe in my first run through. I'm glad that you decided to check out how things could have gone in the other decision, and I look forward to watching you fight the Nightmare King some more in the future!

The idea of the troupe is certainly good and the boss fight is great, but it's sad that instead of giving us a new location to explore, we run around 9 places and collect flames.
It's generally designed to be best found far earlier, and then it adds a layer to the campaign for a good, long stretch of it. That's why the first set of flames are all early/mid-game stuff, and it intensifies from there.
As post-game DLC it feels tedious and grindy, but if you find it earlier during your playthrough it can feel really enjoyable to fight the new enemies as you explore and backtrack
@@Retro_Rainer Even if this is free content and making an entire location for it seemed to the developers a labor-intensive idea, they still could not force players to collect flames in 9 places. The point is not even that there is no new location, but that collecting 9 flames is not the most interesting and diverse idea.
It's funny watching people fight Grimm for the first time. Once you get the hang of when you should charge your soul and when you should hit, it gets a bit easier
This episode was great. The choice given in this quest is an interesting one. I like that you make a choice that morally resonated with you. A bit unfortunate that you didn't get your gift first, but to be honest, you really don't miss as much as one might first think. As with the alternative timeline... Nightmare King Grimm is viewed by many as one of THE hardest bosses in the whole game. Some would put him as high as 2nd hardest. While I personally don't think he's as difficult, I would still say he's at least within top 5. Being the first proper Super-Boss the game puts in your path, he's definitely a MUCH harder boss than anything you've faced up until this point. Some people have struggled More with this boss than they did with the Path of Pain. Nightmare King Grimm, aka NKG, isn't a boss you can brute-force your way through. You have to truly learn the dance, but oh what a SATISFYING dance it is to master. Seeing how satisfied you felt with beating the Path of Pain, I have no doubt that you WILL be able to learn this dance as well, and find the experience rewarding. And if you find yourself growing tired of an endlessly repeating dance that seemingly never ends, then there's Absolutely NO shame in putting it on ice for a while and save it for later. The game still has other content that is easier than NKG for you yet to discover and explore. ...and If you find yourself Never being able to beat NKG... ...then good thing that you definitely will not ever at any other point in the game need to fight NKG ever again...
if its any consolation, it doesn't feel that dirty- this other ending (which no one told you of, you simply reasonably deduced it) is still blind to you! and we still get your reaction to it! :D Which is great cause its the way cooler ending! Glad you agree XD (they tried to make the other ending better by keeping divine around so you can get all the unbreakable charms, but I guess that patch didn't make it to xbox???)
I personally love that you’re doing an alternate timeline option of fighting NKG. It’s my favorite boss in game even if it is a major, major hurdle to overcome. What’s been your favorite boss in HK so far?
I believe the main reason for the "abort ritual path" to even exist is so that there's a resolution for players who can't beat NKG. I *do* feel like the dialogue should more strongly imply that you are missing out on amazing content though. Imagine missing this!
My build for Failed Champion was something like Sharp Shadow, for extra dmg and dash length, Stalwart Shell, to reduce the hits taken, Grubsong because duh it’s free soul, Nailmaster's Glory, aannnnd Unbreakable Strength because I started grinding for that the second I was able to lol. The Grimm fight triggered a YT viewer reaction for me. Mapo's refusal to double jump over the bats had me screaming.
I found it easy enough to jump in the middle of them. you also have more damage opportunities that way.
For me, it was putting on the good spell charms and then not using any spells lol
I just dash over them
My thing was his literal desire to not dodge any attacks. I don’t know whats up with him but his addiction to the quick slash has melted his brain into dash towards enemy and spam attacks to win. Definitely didn’t feel like he was trying to learn the battle properly
I always dash through them. I just find it easier.
Honestly I’m happy things went this way. Typically people save the Radiance for last and end up being underwhelmed.
Yeah, that's the downside of NKG being a second, harder full-screen-name boss. It's an amazing fight, but it suddenly radiance isn't so tough in comparison.

Grimm took me more attempts than Radiance and felt overwhelming but as I learned the deadly dance he became my favorite fight which I can do flawlessly while the Radiance always feels like I'm destined to take damage as I battle the random chaos.
Nightmare King Grimm is probably one of the best bossfights in gaming, nothing is random, but it's still hard; it truly feels like a dance.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, Radiance is kinda easy,
NKG and the *other two* (and markoth, but fuck him) are the real deal when it comes to difficulty.

To me it's my least favorite fight. I think it's the only boss that has an attack that takes a while and makes him invulnerable. That takes the choice from you to play either defensively, or aggressively and take changes - you can only play defensively.
I love your passion for the games you play. Deep bow of respect
So the thing about the grub father, there are insects that have to eat their young in order for them to undergo metamorphosis into their next stage of life, and once you get the grubberfly's elegy charm, you get an achievement called metamorphosis

I like really like NKG doing 2 health dmg. It makes you actually fully learn the fight before victory, rather than being able to bumble your way through it

First time I beat the game I left this and mighty zote alone. Watching Mapo play got me the will to try the game again. I've beat Steel Soul and it was so much easier this time that I finally got to beat them and now only one achievement to go. So I believe he also can do it, but might need some time :)
The five stages of NKG
1) Omg the music this is awesome!
2) So hard!! Two damage? This fight sucks
3) Omg I'm dodging!!
4) I....can....win... I hate this fight
5) this is the best boss of the game, the double damage forces you to dodge, and the fight itself becomes a perfectly choreographed dance. It's beautiful.
Too bad this isn't the main savefile.
The music is the reason I didn't mind getting curbstomped for days. I remember shouting to my wife "MY BRAIN IS JUST TOO SLOW FOR THIS"
NKG was actually my breaking point for a while. I gave up for like... a year, and finally came back and beat it. Now I can beat it like 85% of the time. Such an awesome fight.
I personally prefer Carefree charm instead of Grimm Child charm, ofc after activating all unbreakable charms
The madlad almost defeated Grimm by facetanking it. Respect, but also the pain of an experienced player.
Grubfather actually ate all the grubs to act as a cocoon of sorts. That's the only way they'll mature into grubberflies.
Just because it forces me to actually learn their moves rather than brute force a lot of the fight, spamming attack while getting hit, I think you will come around to it too once u beat it
Grimm is one of the best boss designs in all of gaming. Great flow to the fight and you feel so good when you finally get it.
as much as I enjoy each episode and am excited for new ones, I've now started to dread the post-hollow knight blues, this time by association... I've been just telling myself that he hasn't done 'this' and 'that' and 'that other thing' yet, and as you're checking them off the list I'm starting to dread the impending end. the first blind playthrough is an amazing one-time experience and what comes second is seeing someone else enjoy the experience just as much.
so for everyone who is struggling with NKG:
take it slow, if you try to rush dealing damage you will get hit. dodge, attack, dodge, attack, dodge, attack...
for spikes: avoid fast movements and just stand between the spikes.
for fire pillars: take small steps to move out of the way, ideally you'd move towards grimm so after the 4th pillar appears you can do some damage. if you are at the edge of the arena shade cloak through the pillar if you have to.
for dash-uppercut: shade cloak through grimm, if you were standing still before the attack the fireballs wont hit you if you dont move after dashing.
for fire bats: jump above the first one and shade cloak through the rest and get some hits on grimm.
for dive-dash: jump towards grimm and double jump behind him, you can also pogo him instead of using wings.
for pufferfish: just above the fireballs that are coming straight at you and dont dash as you might dash into grimm.
he does the pufferfish attack at 75,50,25% of hp so you only have to get through it 3 times and you can tell how much hp he has left by this
"You're telling me that I missed out on THIS?? By being morally correct and trying to be a good person??" 😆 the instant and long pause just to fully bask in NK Grimm's theme is ABSOLUTELY worth everything you did to experience it 💖
One of these days Mapo will give up his hopes of finding healing windows during the attack phase of high level bosses and realize he just needs to concentrate on healing during the obvious windows.

I'm sure you'll hear it more in the future episodes ;)
You have the best playthrough of this game ever, hands down.
While it is never _quite_ explained, the mix of the fact that you can still hear the Grubs and the description of Brubberflys Elegy (Gratitute of Grubs that will _move on the the next stage of their life) Implies that he didn't so much eat them as play cocoon for them
"You're telling me I missed out on THIS by being a morally correct person?!" RIGHT?! GO EVIL!

I think double damage boss is conveying the thought that you shouldn't try to heal and just tank the damage, like you did in a Grimm fight. NKG fight wants the player to learn the dance perfectly and it's super satisfying in the end because there are no random factors (like for example in Radiance boss) only precision

Strangely enough, I think I forced myself to learn nail arts because of Nightmare King Grimm, so you probably had the right idea.
After you finish the game, I highly recommended mossbag’s complete lore video!

It's a fine video, but I think it's kind of overhyped.
Eh, it's way too long and he makes unnecessary jokes. I personally find other lore videos alot better to listen to. It's not hard to professionally explain this game's story without taking over an hour lol
One SUPER underrated example is The Lady of Lore. I wish people saw her version instead, she really makes it engaging and I found it easier to focus on. And it's all within just 26 minutes.

Thanks to "unnamed thing that shall not be named" you can fight the nightmare king on the normal save file
nightmare king grimm doing 2 damage is actually a good thing believe it or not, that means that to beat him at all you have to learn him properly, which also means that the difference between beating him and beating him flawlessly is very small, if you can beat him at all, you can also beat him on radiant difficulty, as a result he becomes one of the easiest bosses to beat on radiant. also hes pure execution and knowledge based, there is basically zero rng here, its all skill, which cant be said about some other bosses (*cough* markoth *cough* zote)
Do give the weaversong charm a go at some point, it's quite delightful in addition to being fairly useful. Every charm in the game has a purpose and some useful combinations with others, so if you find yourself wondering what a given charm is useful for, why not just try it and see what use you can find?

The idea of the troupe is certainly good and the boss fight is great, but it's sad that instead of giving us a new location to explore, we run around 9 places and collect flames.
It's generally designed to be best found far earlier, and then it adds a layer to the campaign for a good, long stretch of it. That's why the first set of flames are all early/mid-game stuff, and it intensifies from there.
As post-game DLC it feels tedious and grindy, but if you find it earlier during your playthrough it can feel really enjoyable to fight the new enemies as you explore and backtrack
it's free stuff. I'm not complaining, as long as the free stuff offers something worthwhile, which it absolutely does.
@@Retro_Rainer Even if this is free content and making an entire location for it seemed to the developers a labor-intensive idea, they still could not force players to collect flames in 9 places. The point is not even that there is no new location, but that collecting 9 flames is not the most interesting and diverse idea.
The troupe makes a lot more sense when mixed into the main campaign, it's a bit repetitive when you do it in one hit like this.
Grimm's voice kinda reminds me of the raspy whispering voice that Alan Howard used for Sauron in LOTR.
It's funny watching people fight Grimm for the first time. Once you get the hang of when you should charge your soul and when you should hit, it gets a bit easier
Nkg is one of the three hardest bosses in the game
Which is great cause its the way cooler ending! Glad you agree XD
(they tried to make the other ending better by keeping divine around so you can get all the unbreakable charms, but I guess that patch didn't make it to xbox???)
