    Proof of paternity was a big reason. I was expecting you would mention this. It was important for lords or kings to have their child portrayed as a little them as the painting could be the only representation of the child heir that most subjects or even high born feudal families would see. The rightful heir was very important to people so the depictions of children were often made to look like a mirror image of the father. This had a duel effect, showing the child as the pure image of the father, but also showing that the child was different and above the lower children cause he or she was "more developed and matured."

    • @luvlols4462
      @luvlols4462 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Live animals will not strike a pose and sit still like a human model. This forced artists to render them mostly from their own imagination rather than live subjects. The more exotic or wild the animal, the more ridiculous it looked. Dogs and horses are usually pretty accurate but paintings of monkeys and big cats look wonky.

    This was a thing through the 17th and 18th century, I swear. The best way I’ve heard it described is that artists painted babies and children as if they’d only ever heard a vague description of children but had never actually seen one. There’s one from the 1600s I remember seeing where the kids kinda looked like they had fish faces.

  • @mr.personhumanson6871

    The real reason is because children tend to move a lot and are unruly which makes them hard to paint so parents opt to rent a dwarf to pose as their baby so they can be painted.

    Are we ever going to find out why so many medieval texts are decorated with paintings of knights fighting giant snails, or at the very least why artists chose *that* randomness of all things?

    • @sergiowinter5383
      @sergiowinter5383 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the snails are actually snakes and snakes has been seen as a symbol of the devil since genesis, same logic used to paint a snake being treaded by Mary.
