    About "hunky dory"...(makes more sense now)....
    This phrase is very close to Japanese expression "Honki (本気) Dori (or Tori 撮り)" that means 「本気」= serious, earnest, sincere" and 「撮り」= filming, recording, image capturing"

    Awesome! I was just asking ya'll to check out some Band-Maid!! Nice Reaction!!! And yes, they are saying/singing 'hunky dory day' but there is some discussion with fans if it's a double play off of a garbled version of "Honchou dori" asking the locals to confirm they were going the right direction-- which could also apply to the context of the song.

    “Hunky dory” is a phrase I used when I was a kid. A fun way of saying that everything’s going great!
    The scene is an abandoned mine in Japan. I lost the geo-coordinates 😞
    I like how the Maids have kept the kawaii aesthetic and have gradually become more modest. Three of them are in floor length dresses; everything is innocent and fun
    They are all incredibly nice people who deserve all the success in the world. I’m always rooting for them!
    And they are the only rock stars who leave the tour bus cleaner than when they got it 🧹
    Band Maid is also exceptionally diverse and have so many different styles they do well. If you would, please consider one of their more bombastic and beautiful compositions “Puzzle,” official live video. Complex, powerful lyrics, exceptional arrangement.
    Or, if you want to see them go metal? “From Now On,” official music video. Fully instrumental, a song without words that will still give you chills.
    Enjoyed listening to this reaction! Please keep the Maids in rotation ❤

      I have a feeling that Mincho's next outfit will be one of those wide-brim hats with a floor length vail, leaving only her hands visible for holder her guitar. :D

    Hunky Dory is also one of David Bowie's most important LPs (the one with Life on Mars and Changes). I saw an interview where they said Saiki is a big fan, definitely not a casuality.

    It's been Hunky Dory Days for USA, Mexico and Japan fans, that's for sure! As their 2023 10th Anniversary Concert series closes after they performed a whooping 60 of their over 120 superhit songs, we’re now all waiting for the big climax at the 17,000 seat Yokohama stadium in Nov.! A live Band-Maid experience is not to be missed, if at all possible! Thx, Lulu & John!

    Location is a decommissioned granite quarry in the Ishikiri Mountains, Ibaraki from 1909 era that produced the "Inada" stone or "white lady" stone because of its white luster, strong and durable, like Band Maid, Po! Also, Japanese origin - "Honcho-dori" was the "Main Street" in Yokohama (same area Band Maid had their 2021 Christmas concert, and where their 10 Anniversary Tour final will be on 11/26/2023). Story say that American sailors, during the late 1800, were directed to follow this road back to the ship. Therefore, "easy street" to get back to the ship after liberty. Most likely pronounced by the sailors as "Hunky Dory." Btw, check out the lyrics, its on point about the influencing culture, Po! 🦍🍌

    Band Maid is pretty awesome.. simple fact is that as good as the MV's are .. the Genius of the Maids is in the Live setting.... any group can fake it in the studio ... but when you can bring your game live and onstage like Band Maid.... well... that is the way to go ... Puzzle, No God, Domination , Freedom, Play are just scratching the surface of the Band Maid Live catalog.... you should get into it .....

    "hunky Dory" actually comes from japan.
    Apparently, one of the main ports the allies were using during occupation had a main street leading to the port, through the city, called something that sounded like "Hunky Dory", the troops returning to their ships knew when they came across that street they would be able to go straight to their ship, without worrying about getting lost and being late on deck.
    So, "Hunky Dory" came to mean everything was good, no problem, no worries.

    Yes, they are really say Hunky Dory Day. True, hardly anyone says Hunky Dory anymore. But you have to remember, Miku writes the lyrics, and she is a pigeon that's hundreds of years old, so... Location? They are Rocking a Quarry. I can't find the name of this disused rock quarry in Japan at the moment, but someone will know. Whenever you stop pumping out an old quarry it fills with water. Beautiful!

  • @bbobjs
    @bbobjs ปีที่แล้ว

    The etymology of Hunky-Dory is a gigantic rabbit hole in and of itself. One of the common thoughts is that it originated as a Dutch-Japanese saying that American sailors brought back after Perry opened Japan (the Dutch historically having special access to Japan); Hunky being a Dutch-English saying for "Home/Safe" and Dori being Japanese for "Way/Plan/Street/Line." It's also possible the saying has no Dutch origin but still remains a term crafted in Japan and popularized in America by sailors. What makes it more complicated is that the first recorded use of the term is from a minstrel show in the 1860s, roughly a decade after Japan was opened by the west; while it's possible that sailor slang was able to permeate widely enough through culture that it became minstrel slang as well, this seems somewhat unlikely. Also the similar phrase Hunkey Dora was recorded as being used by soldiers in the civil war.
    My personal guess is that Hunky was in wide use during the mid 1800s in America and that the American usage got combined with a Japanese phrase by American sailors in Japan and that ultimately the combination became even more widely propagated by those sailors in the decade following their return to the states. At minimum I'd assume that the current day usage in Japan derives from this usage. What I'm less certain of is if Honky-Dory existed fully before sailors came to Japan or not and unfortunately there seems to be no definite answer.

    • @nomennescio4604
      @nomennescio4604 ปีที่แล้ว

      Otoh it might also have all of that meeting and merging with the Japanese "honkaidou", i.e. the main roiad, and possible the "ri" traditional unit of distance measurement.

    • @bbobjs
      @bbobjs ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nomennescio4604 Yea, the whole entomology of this particular phrase is an absolute maze. Cause it could be that, or it could also be the Japanese adopting an existing Hunky Dory or Hunky Dora because it sounded similar to their phrase or the connection could be complete coincidence or it could be multiple isolated events that created similar sounding phrases that eventually all became Hunky Dory. There just isn't really any documentation on the topic and the tiny bit that exists somewhat runs counter to the possibility of a Japanese origin, but then also we know the phrase gained wide usage in Japan so even if there origin isn't Japanese, the spread of the phrase in Japan remains a mystery. I drove myself mad looking into it and ultimately just had to give up. Unless there's some old Japanese source that happened to document it, everything seems to be a dead end.
