    I used this process working for a company to cut the bodies off old rail cars so they could be rebodied. It's a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. If you get real good you can shave the weld off and leave the factory edge of the base metal.

    • @1nvisible1
      @1nvisible1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *Hey sparky, what are you controlling most when you shave the old weld off, the amps? I'm assuming that I need at least 20 degrees diff in melting temp to leave the base metal intact? Thanks*

    • @sparkythawelder
      @sparkythawelder ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@1nvisible1 It's been a few years but if memory serves... The weld has pretty much the same melting point so we've just cranked up the amps. The trick is a steady hand. You use the arc not the rods themselves. Just cut a little off the weld at a time.

    • @sparkythawelder
      @sparkythawelder 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@engjds Yes, the air is used to blow the molten metal away from the cut. There are cutting rods that do not require air but I'm not sure how they work exactly.

    • @engjds
      @engjds 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sparkythawelder Ahh ok, so in theory if you cut something on the vertical without air, that might work?

  • @lonnygehring3043
    @lonnygehring3043 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    The reason the first gouge didn't work is it looked like you had the air discharge holes on the wrong side of the carbon. Have the air discharge holes orientated so they blow high pressure air underneath the carbon and it removes molten metal much better. When the discharge holes are blowing air over top of the molten metal it makes a mess and doesn't remove metal cleanly. Shorten up the carbon stickout too. Maybe 4-5 inches or so

      Gouging should be EFFORTLESS !
      210 Sounds Very Low.
      I was even skeptical of 250+.
      Wait until your boss walks away.
      Turn it up to 350 Amps.
      Verify that you have Plenty of compressed air.
      Verify that Gouge rod is sitting Perfectly in the center of the V shaped notch .
      Then go !
      Good Luck 🤞

      Yep not enough amps 1/4 carbon gouging rods require 300 - 400 amps DCEP and the electrode should extend at most 7 inches from the gouging torch with the air jet between the electrode and work piece 80 psi and 100 psi at the torch; higher pressures may be used, but they don’t remove metal more efficiently

    Want to anger every yardbird on a ship? Use this. I used to be a turdchaser in the navy and we had to cut these brackets off of a few bulkheads. Did they give us an Oxy/Acetylene pony rig to use a torch? Heck no! MUST use the cigars as we called them. They had excellent ventilation on ships, the bazooka tubes and positive ventilation from a couple of hatches that were left open, but these carbon arc sticks cut right through that. So here I am, a booter, just doing what I was told. Pissed off all the yardbirds until one dwarf looking guy came up with a torch and cut a bracket off for me. I gave him a nod as if to acknowledge that was the best way to do it.
