I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today (December 27), this was the basis for our Sunday School Lesson of the Day. It was entitled "Called to Prepare the Way." The hymn, "How Long, O God?" written by Ralph F. Smith (1950-1994), is a good hymn to compliment this Scripture, regardless of denomination.
This verse, 3:8 has a much deeper meaning then I think anyone of us can grasp completely? Ether way. Paul was trying to be sure as he could about the repentance of the ones he baptized. Think about when Jesus came to get baptized? What was Paul’s response to Jesus? If you compare your Bible version to the kjv Bible you will notice in Matthew 3:8 fruit is ftuit(s). (Many kinds of fruit?). And kjv uses “meet” in reference to “repentance”, which can mean, (Worthiness of repentance?).
What about burning, what about baptizing with fire there is a strong strong message in here, but also a method given to us to use in our lifes to bear fruit worthy of repentance. 3 times he speaks of fire
John wasn't sugar coating it.Today many believe if they are born into a religious family they can coat tail through and automatically. They were politicians and religious leaders. Could have been looking for PR opportunity? Could have thought John was Elijah? Could have thought if there was something going on from God that they wanted to "be seen" there? John was definitely like why are you here? It's like he was calling them out for lack of repentance and "fake" worship. Just thinking out loud. Not saying I'm right.

UNQUENCHABLE FIRE SOUNDS LIKE HELL, DOESN'T IT?
WAS THAT CAMEL'S HAIR BY LOUIS VUITTON?
IS MATTHEW 3:12 A REFERENCE ABOUT HELL?
