  • How do you know when your abstract painting is finished? In this video, I take you through the process with one of my paintings, showing you what I didn’t like about it and how I fixed it and finished the work.
I talk about what I focus on and what questions I ask the painting in order to gain clarity around what steps to take next.
Make a big move to disrupt the work and make a big change
    1. Rotate the work so you see it differently. Ask: What have I got?
    2. Look for repetition and ask: Do I need this? Have I already got this somewhere else?
    3. Is my eye led around the composition?
When you have worked through these questions, and you’re happy with the work, stand back and walk away. Look at it again after a few days to see if you still feel the same.

Thank you! I’ve been struggling with a piece of work I’m not quite happy with and this has fired up my enthusiasm to revisit and edit it! I love your finished work, it feels ‘fuller’ and immediately drew me in. The shapes flow beautifully😊

Judy, in my opinion the painting was absolutely fine and done as it was. I notice a lot of artists should have stopped a long time ago instead of keep adding to the painting. You’re finished painting, after changing the angle and filling in all the interesting bits, now looks like a pond going thru it. You painted out all the interesting textures which made it a more cohesive painting

Goodness I thought you were going to say you liked it better before!! Glad you agree that I improved it. It's very subjective though - the golden rule is to paint to please yourself - not others.

Hi Judy, my fault on the explanation, I really liked your first version of the painting better. I visited your website and I think all your paintings there are great. The design is very appealing, you are a very talented artist. What I meant was to say a lot of artists sometimes over do the corrections , but that is how they see it.

What color glaze did you do ? Did you do it all over your painting or just select spots. I find when ever I do a glaze it takes away from all the colors I have in my paintings and turns my white areas what ever the glaze color is I have applied.

I usually do a warm and/or cool glaze. Any transparent paint will do the trick - you get to choose and mix your own glazing colours. I like to glaze areas and don't generally use one glaze over the whole painting.
