    Always felt that Natalie Portman role in Leon was supposed to be creepy. The trauma of the characters family life shown caused her to interact in a way that a girl turning into a young woman she thought should to a male figure she liked. And then Leon uncomfortable reactions were good, but he had some messed up back ground and underdeveloped relationship skills too.

    Leon wasnt cringey. He just had the social skills of a canned sardine due to his profession. Other than his boss he really didnt have any friends, probably ZERO experience with kids and followed a strict routine. Any person who comes across that is going to think of it as weird or "cringey"

    • @bheast86
      @bheast86 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Leon wasn't cringey (apart from the stuff about killing people as a profession); it's how the character of Mathilda was sexualised in the longer version. Having her family wiped out would certainly be traumatic, but possibly wouldn't divert her from the running-for-her-life bit

    • @adamb89
      @adamb89 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The whole thing is very well put together. Leon the character wasn't creepy, he was just genuinely childlike in his head. And Mathilda was a seriously traumatized young girl probably starting puberty and not sure how to properly act (or more appropriately, not to act) on those emotions. And Leon sure isn't going to be any help in that department. Separate, it's fine. 12 year old girl with a crush on a "boy" is normal. A 40 year old man who is socially stunted is also normal. But put them together and that "boy" she has a crush on turning out to be a 40 year old man, who doesn't even realize it? The awkward tension just comes through naturally. That's what makes the script so good, it evokes such a profound sense of discomfort from what is, when you look at it, there actually isn't anything WRONG going on. She's traumatized and confused, he's pretty obviously autistic and naïve, neither one of them are predatory. But it still comes off that way. It's like when a great chef can cook a delicious meal using like three ingredients. The individual elements naturally play off each other in such a way that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

      @digidv85 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adamb89 I wasn't offended by the interactions between Natalie and Jean in Leon. At best, they're awkward although wouldn't go as far to say the depiction is outright immoral to showcase. I'm tempted to agree with Natalie Portman. Leon - The Professional, was released in cinemas in two very different versions. In the UK, it was SIMPLY entitled Leon, and had very few of the rather cringey interactions between Leon and Mathilda that is in the US version. It also cut out nearly all the 'cutting the door chain' sequences, and the subsequent action. I only happened to see the US cut when I bought an early Blu-ray release, and thought that - not only that it had a creepy vibe - but also that it wasn't nearly as good a film as the one I'd seen in the cinema in the UK...

    • @InnaGottaDavida
      @InnaGottaDavida ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The US version, titled "The Professional" cut out a few of the more suggestive scenes with Matilda and Leon because American audiences were bothered by them at test screenings. The European version, titled "Leon" left in the suggestive scenes believing that European audiences were more open-minded about relationships with minors and implied much more overtly that Matilda was in love with Leon.
      I have seen both and am not offended by either version. I consider the film to be one of Portman's best because she was absolutely fearless in that role.

    Natalie Portman has WAY more cringe roles then Leon: The Professional. She did a great job portraying a girl that was falling for her "hero". He saved her, and that always comes with extra feelings on both sides. She thought it was love, Leon knew he had a responsibility to look after her like a father, and thats what he did.

    While I agree that Portman was highly oversexualized as a young person after that movie, I've never seen the movie itself as more than a young girl misunderstanding her feelings towards the first person who has actually cared for her in her life. Leon does not sexualize her, and is quite clear in telling her she's "just a little girl."

    The fact that studios cast based on social media followers rather than acting chops explains why there are no great actors alive today who are under 30.
    If today’s under 30 actors are encouraged to have a bigger social media presence rather than doing theater or put more time into studying the craft rather than making Tik Tok videos… then it’s no wonder.

    • @thatboybear
      @thatboybear ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t really know of any film actors that were “encouraged” to do theater. A lot of them either started there or went there after just to try a different medium. And you do realize that movies are business, yes? Hollywood isn’t setting out to make “art;” it’s out to make money. Why do you see the same new actor in 3 films back to back? They’re banking on the name recognition to drive ticket sales. It makes absolute sense that they’d push the person with the most followers, because follows can translate to cash. I’m not saying I like it; in fact, I absolutely abhor how deeply mired in social media “fame” we are. But cultural consciousness is one thing, recouping funds on a 100 million dollar investment is another, and I repeat: Hollywood is a business. They’re gonna choose cash over art every time.

    I'm on the fence about Leon. It's a great movie but it does have some creepy lines. Disappointed about Besson. It's getting harder and harder to navigate the minefield of dodgy entertainment types. Just found out Rowan Atkinson is an ultra Tory which is going to affect how I see him from now on.
    On the other hand I had republican vibes about Ryan Gosling because of First Man but the real him is very different.
