- This takes a look at how to do CW mode on the Yaesu FT-891. We start with the function settings that will put you on the air, then move on to basic receive menu settings, and then a quick look at saving your CW set-up, using RT-Systems.
I’d like to apologize to everyone watching this video. I’ve been ill for the last couple of months and really hit hard while working on this one. It took me a lot more time to get this recorded as I was constantly having coughing and sneezing fits that forced me to back-up and record whole sections of the video. When going through it while editing, I noticed my voice was slurred almost to the point of some of the words being unintelligible. I will be listing all the Function and Menu Settings in the video description so if you didn’t understand anything, you can look it up.

Tom, thank you so much for putting this video out. I needed something like this to help me get all the CW settings for my 891 set, as the menu system can get cumbersome and confusing with this radio. I have printed hard copies of both the basic and advanced manuals, along with the Nifty Mini Manual for field reference. I've had a few times, like "CW wave shape", that are really not explained and I was having to dig elsewhere like the 891 Facebook group for the answer. I am beginning to use my 5 yr old 891 that I purchased in 2019 a lot more now, so this video was a great resource. 73 DE KC9EHQ
Good on ya!
alright thanks. my radio woundt transmit on CW. it was the Break-In option that needed to be enabled.
Don’t feel like you’re all alone in that… Fired up my FT-891 for this weekend’s contest and no reaction to my nimble playing on my key (LOL). Tomorrow, I will tame the beast (I think). 73
@@georgeetherege8347 be sure the red TX light beside the screen is lighting up. i wish you great sucess!
Just got the FT-891. So sorry you've been ill. I had the same problem with "Long" COVID last year. Take care and keep pounding brass.
I found the answer. You have to go into the menu and add break in mode on every band.
I knew it was something simple. Thanks for the email and hope to work you on cw someday
Thank you Tom. Good intro info as I get into CW. A couple of observations...1. in you video you spoke about menu items 07-10 and 07-13 however, those two books/chapters were not on the menu setting list you spelled out in the information section. Also, HR Power I believe is 16-03 and not 16:02 which is how it is listed on the spelled out menu setting. Thanks again, 73 Tom K0TLS
Sorry about the mix up. A lot of these I do either late at night or early in the morning. I have a full time job and don’t edit as well as I should. Glad you figured it out.
My FT-891 will not work on CW from 80 - 30 Meters. When I use my keyer it does not go into transmit. If I key my mike it does go into transmit. I have made the adjust in Menu Setting 07-07 CW BFO in the Auto Mode and that works correctly. Can you tell me what menu adjustment I need to do to make the rig work on CW on these bands? It works great on 20-10 meters. Thanks and 73's - Norm K9CQ
I have no idea. If it works on one band, it should work on all of them. Read the section in your owners manual about operating CW (page 43 in the basic manual).
I want to thank on that great tip about the headphone jack. I have been using a Heil Pro7. I ordered a mono to stereo adapter to use my heil headset. Now I don't have to worry about that. I always wondered what that was for. The other questions is, if you put a set of air buds with a mic, does the mic work on the radio?
I don’t know about the ear bud question. I’ll have to give it a try.
Hello, I'm new hamradio ... in May I'll start a cw course but in the meantime I'm preparing things to be ready
This video is very useful to me to set up my FT-891
Using a Paddle, can I set BK-IN OFF, KEYER ON - and not use a dummy load?
Thanks for sharing / 73
CR7BDO
That should work. Will still put out a tone but not transmit. I used the dummy load so I wouldn’t put my transmit signal out on the air when I was doing demonstrations.
Hi. Any idea if you can do a video of the new exciting VaraC digi mode on the 991a soon?
I already have. 2 months or so ago.
I'm confused. The KEYER setting...is this for the internal keyer and if it's NOT pressed, allows you to use an external paddle?
Guess that’s a ???? Guess I’ll need to figure it out on my own when it comes in….
When the KEYER function is ON, you can use a paddle directly connected to the KEY input on the front of your rig to send CW. When that function is turned OFF, you can use a straight key plugged into the KEY input to send CW. Hope this helps. 73 de Tom, ND3N
@@ND3N on front of the rig? The keyer input on the back is for? I must be blind. I don’t see a input on the front of the rig to connect an external paddle.
Tom, just a suggestion. If you ever edit this you might want to start by telling folks to turn their monitor on or they’ll get frustrated following your instructions and hearing no sideline. Just a suggestion. 73
Thanks. I guess some things are just a given…
@@ND3N Really Tom! Pretty snarky response to a viewer who is just trying to be helpful. That's the last time I try to be helpful or watch your channel. Subscription cancelled! PS: If it was a given it would be "on" as the default setting!
No snark intended. But if you’re that easily offended, you probably want to find another channel anyways…. Good luck with that…
will the fc50 turn down ft891 power automatically when automatic tuning?
Yes - it tunes with 5 watts.
