    this video is so inspiring. it's so great to see people thinking about long-term sustainability instead of short-term convenience, especially in this consumeristic time we live in! x

    Alli Cherry, I love these videos. I've been into eliminating waste since the 1970s, but sometimes felt lonely/discouraged because my peers don't so much. Yay, for your generation! My zero waste thing is hanging clothes to dry. This can be done indoors on a rack or even just on hangers. Electricity saved, and clothes last much longer (fuzz in the lint trap is actually fibers sloughed off clothes from drying), also my clothes don't shrink as much. xo

      @truepeacenik 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Claire Germain Nail - Team Air Dry! Also, if your clothing has manmade material, that lint is actually wee bits of plastics getting into the water supply from washing.

    I love your zero waste videos, so well thought out and very realistic. I find some other channels to be pressuring and yours is not that at all. Love your approach to spreading the message!

    I got a safety razor that was my grandmothers. I've made my own toner, body butter, tooth powder, house hold cleaning spray and just finished making my own bug spray. I've started caring around a fork, spoon and reusable straw in a cloth napkin in my purse (I use the cloth napkin as a towel if public bathrooms only have paper towels) and have at least one jar in my car at all times 🌎

    If your plate is curved you could just put it right side up (not flipping it over) ontop of the bowl. That way it wont slide off 😸

    I was cleaning my tub while watching this video. It was clogged, and I was considering getting draino. But I thought there must be some DIY hack on Pinterest, so I don't have to go to the store (or use chemicals or buy plastic >_

      8 cups boiling water, 1/2 cup of baking soda (let it sit a minute) then 1 cup of boiling water mixed with 1 cup of vinegar (wait 15mins) then 8 cups of boiling water! Keep in mind you probably don't need at much for the sink.

      Isn't it incredible how well that works? It's like a science experiment! ;)
      I absolutely agree with you about our consumer habits. It's been so interesting even learning more about myself and my habits though this whole process. I wasn't expecting the "self-growth" aspect of all of these changes but it's something I can't ignore.

    Thank you for an inspiring video, again!
    I have always used plates to cover bowls. In my childhood in Soviet Union, nobody had never heard about plastic wrap or tupperware, so this was the only thing (besides using pot lids). Sometimes I stack bowls on top of each other and cover only the top one. Actually round plates are better for covering because you can put them on the bowl right side up and they will not slide off.
    I also do this covering thing the other way around - if I have an half onion or tomato or a piece of cake, I put them on the plate and cover with a bowl (preferrably with a glass bowl so I can see what is under it).

    Please keep sharing zero waste tips as you come across them! Also your hair in this video is GORGEOUS

  • @loriekey5860
    @loriekey5860 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yup. We do the plate trick all the time. If you put the plate with the bottom side down in the storage bowl, it nestles down nicely and isn't as unstable. The difficulty comes when you need to stack storage containers in the fridge. That's when I use the rectangular glass storage with snap on lids. The lids are plastic but I have been using them for months now because the snap on lids don't warp and stay secure longer. Plus, I was able to find them in a thrift store. We go to a pack it yourself grocery store and when I forget bags, I borrow boxes they have available their products came in. Then, after we unload the groceries, I place the boxes in the back of the car and return them between shopping trips. Thanks for your ideas.

    I felt the same about safety razors! Then finally bought one a couple weeks ago and love it! It's more work but a better shave and doesn't end up in the landfill. Win-win! I love your realistic approach to zero waste. I'm so fascinated and inspired by zero waste but sometimes it feels overwhelming and complicated. Baby steps!

    Dear Alli, you don´t have to take your razor apart after use. It dries just fine after using and rinsing it. No rust. I´ve been using one for many years and just clean the inside with soap and a little brush whenever I change the blade :-). Love from Germany!

    • @AWanderingEye
      @AWanderingEye 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MidlifeByKirstin I am finding my blades last a lot longer when I remove the blade and store it and the razor so they stay dry. I just give it a good rinse while taking blade out then store on a shelf in bathroom, I put the blade in a see through container so there should be no surprises.

    I thought 'everyone' did the plate thing! I am grown up with doing that. We used plastic wrap too - but maybe not in all aspects that are so normalised today. Like when covering a bowl with dough while it rises I always used a towel but apparently the norm is now the plastic wrap. Isn't it crazy how disposable products just have replaced so many things that now we think the other solutions are 'weird' (at least I have caught myself thinking that a few times transitioning to zero waste)?

    I started using my boyfriend's grandfather's bronze safety razor a couple of weeks ago. It feels kinda glamorous to be honest, and actually way easier to use than I thought it would be! I just use my conditioner and it glides like a dream - even in sensitive areas like armpits. Such a great way to reduce plastic waste - I had used Schick Intuition in the past and can't believe how wasteful shaving used to be!!

    I switched to a safety razor for around a year now and love it! I love those little balm tins you have. They are super cute! I grew up using the plate to cover a bowl method so it's nothing new to me :P For another EASY zero waste tip I recommend carrying/tying a bandana around your purse or bag because you can 1) wear it 2) blow your nose in it 3) wipe your hands on it 4) carry your stuff with it (small items, sandwiches, etc) I've probably saved like 30 boxes of tissues (allergy sufferer lol).

    This was incredibly helpful. I've been loving all these low waste/zero waste videos but like you, I wanted to replace everything right away! Now, unless I find out something is harming me or my family, I am waiting to slowly replace items with more sustainable options. I recently bought two stainless steel straws and almost always carry a steel bottle, cup or mug with me for water and coffee, as well as reusable bags. And I also peel labels off! 😊

    For collecting food wastes I use a soup container (I have another one and decides to use the old one for food waste so that I don't need to buy a new container). During some weeks when I have more food wastes, I use the egg containers which says suitable for home composting on the package to contain the extra waste. I have also used pizza box once from my take away. They all work the same, just put the waste into the box and put the box into the fridge until you decides to compost them.

    I'm always using plate as a lid when comes to storage food in the fridge, and every type of plate is good for this - sometimes you have to put it upside down, and sometimes just like it is, depends of plate shape.

    I'm also being much more aware of the containers that I buy things in glass jars when I can with metal lids. Granted, it's still useful to have some plastic jars for Disney Days and when I want the option of tossing it while I'm out.

  • @FlirtyinFlorida

    You are so right about going zero waste being a process and not something that happens overnight. I recently eliminated using a facial cleanser that comes in a plastic container; I only use a multi-purpose balm/cleanser that comes in a glass jar and a charcoal soap bar that comes in a recycled cardboard box. Also where did you get your glass roller balls from; I've been looking for some clear ones with metallic tops for a while.

    Hi Alli! I too, have recently done very similar zero waste swaps. I no longer buy lotion either or face moisturizer. I typically use jojoba oil for my body too. I recently purchased argan oil for my face and I love it! My face is slightly on the dry side and it leaves my face very supple and hydrated. I feel like we have a lot in common. I take labels off everything too. Sometimes I spend way too much time trying to take the glue off the containers, but it's worth it. :) Thank you for another great video!! I look forward to them every week. :)

    I find that labels create more clutter so the minimalist in me is driven insane by the visual clutter. I took the razor leap while teaching in China and ended up with a cheap aluminum safety razor and recently upgraded to a nice heavy duty one and let me tell you, it makes all the difference! Just remember you don't have to press, the weight of the razor should do it for you. Loving the brow product, I've been looking for a nontoxic one and this looks perfect.

      Me too - I've made it a habit to say that I don't need a bag right off the bat. Most of the time the cashiers couldn't care less - but I've gotten plenty of concerned "are you sure?" and a couple of times older cashier ladies wouldn't let me leave without a bag! Weird! It's good to keep a foldable bag on hand in case they insist I guess!

    i have been doing the plate over bowl thing forever exactly out of laziness! and towel over bowl too.. have you tried to keep your greens in the fridge in damp towel? it's surprising to me how effective it is. i used it for lettuce and it stayed fresh for like 3 full days. i need to experiment more with this method.
    i also had a pair of long silk pants that i didn't enjoy wearing anymore and they had some wear and tear - so i couldn't sell them. and then i had an epiphany - i've always wanted a silk pillow case and now i had this silk material that i am wondering what to do with.. 2 and 2 together - i now just wrap it over my pillow and tie it on the back (lazy again) and i love it. i am honestly proud and surprised and happy.. i enjoy being creative and environmentalism and zero waste and financial constraints require you to be creative :)
    thanks for the great video! and making balms is balmy :) ;)

    I'm wondering why people avoid alcohol in skin products? I feel like it's a good thing to preserve things and extend shelf life. I like to use it for cleaning too. I guess it's moisturizer and alcohol is definitely drying. My favorite face moisturizing oil is rose hip oil, it makes my skin feel so soft! Jojoba is good too.

    • @AlliCherry
      @AlliCherry  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've found that alcohol irritates my skin. It can also cause erosion and dryness of the surface of the skin. I prefer gentler preservatives like vitamin e or rosemary extract. I do love to disinfect and clean using alcohol though!

    My mum always puts plates over bowls, but usually the right side up, so they don’t slide off (the part the plate stands on that sticks out usually locks it pretty well). We do have plastic wrap in our kitchen, but it’s in a cabinet that is kinda high and the plates are easier to access (: and using plates like this is great for stacking things in the fridge! (also I guess there was no plastic wrap available during the communist times in Poland so we don’t have that habit as a nation???)

    I'm starting to become a "control freak" in a way, because I also have some food sensitivities too and I had to learn about a bunch of ingredients within the products I was using, and now I read everything very carefully. I switched to jojoba oil too and LOVE it, I also make a body butter/ lotion with shea butter, coconut oil and aloe vera gel ( alcohol free and it took me a while to find one that is more natural and not so processed) and I recently found a recipe for a face serum with jojoba oil and some essential oils that will help my very dry skin, that got drier since I move to the US because there is AC everywere and my skin just hates it :/
    Thanks for sharing more zero waste tips! XO

      +Paola Muciño It sounds like you're making great progress, Paola! In my experience the beginning of that process is overwhelming, but once you simplify (products especially) it gets so much easier. Will you share your lotion recipe with me? I haven't seen one with aloe gel and it sounds lovely. Change is hard but you can do it! 💕

      Alli Cherry, sure!
      Here is the basic recipe, I made it as it says and is good. The aloe vera helps to absorb it easier and doesn't feel greasy. I will recomend you to make it that way first and then you can add more or less, of one of the ingredients.
      *2 Tbsp alcohol free aloe vera gel.
      * 1 Tbsp coconut oil or jojoba oil. (I've tried both and still don't know wich one I like the most, haha. Thinking that I will add both in the next batch)
      *1 Tbsp of shea butter.
      -In a double boiler, melt the sea butter and the coconut oil. If using jojoba oil, add after the shea butter is melted and out of the heat.
      -Put the gel into a bowl and add half of the mix of oil and seha butter. Whisk vigurously until it forms and emulsion.
      -Add the rest of the oil mix and stir once again.
      -You can also add some essential oils if you want.
      :)

    I'm gluten sensitive, too, and had no idea my dermatitis could be gluten related! Makes so much sense, thanks for the info. About the balm, have you had any trouble with the tin leaking?

    • @AlliCherry
      @AlliCherry  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm finding that my gluten senstitivly is the cause of most of my ailments ;) The balms either have beeswax or carnauba wax in them and they stay solid and don't leak.

    Great video as usual ! :) I use coconut oil for everything, have done this for years and years. But I've always wanted to try jojoba oil, maybe it will be the next one ! :) I am like you, I hate labels and when I'm not too lazy I remove them from everything as well. I am looking for the best way ever to remove them fast, what's your preferred method ? ^^ PS don't worry I use plates too, lazy minds are often resourceful haha :D

    I've been recently doing some research on palm oil and how unsustainable it can be. I realized that they put palm oil in many products we use with sneaky names such as glycerin. I would like to know what you think about this matter? ( the bar soap you mentioned in this video has glycerin in it )

    Thanks for the inspiration with the razor and also the fountain pen (with Andrea Sanders). I'll be working on those purchases! I would love to here you talk about your strategy for intimates. Do you have a favorite ethical underwear company? I'm asking because, unfortunately, I just bought some undies in a rush before doing some research.

    I have been wanting to try the safety razor for a while now but i have not yet because just like you were, i am a little bit terrified. I was wondering if the safety razor, (the actual blade), is easy to clean? I use Preserve razors now and i find the blades very hard to clean, because the actual blades are so close it is difficult to get water in between and rinse the blade. What is your thoughts on the Safety razor? :-)

    oh God, razors! I don't shave on a regular because thank goodness I am Asian and hairless. So I never bother with them. I can go months without even looking at my hairless legs.

    What's the best way to get the residue off the bottles when you remove the labels?

    • @AWanderingEye
      @AWanderingEye 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      kellypbrady I peel off as much of the lable as possible, soaking in soapy water helps. Then if anything gummy is left I spread a little liquid oil on and rub away. If there still is residue then I have a scrap of metal scrubbie I use to get those last bits off. All of this (except soaking) gets done faster than it took for me yo type this with one finger on my phone! P.S. if you don't want to use metal, an old plastic credit card works as a scraper, too!

    Actually, a lot of plastic can be re-recycled, and even when it can't be recycled it can be downcycled into things like Matt & Nat's lining in all their bags and Patagonia uses plastic as a non-animal fleece in their jackets.
    I agree, that we should move away from plastic and be conscious of the materials we use and buy, but I wanted to point out that what you said could be misleading. earth911.com/business-policy/recycling-plastic-bottles-myths/

    • @AlliCherry
      @AlliCherry  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry if what I said was misleading. I think of recycling as a last resort and always try to reduce first. The recycling system is privatized in my city and there's no real guarantee that things aren't ending up in the landfill. If the plastics are dirty for example, they end up going straight to the landfill and one dirty product can contaminate thousands. Since plastic doesn't biodegrade and recycling doesn't always ensure waste reduction, I prefer to replace plastic items with items I can reuse. :)
