  • This is the 3rd video in the series. I am a a 30 year old athlete and am looking to get back to an active lifestyle. These are my videos documenting my recovery. The first week has been a lot of ups and downs. Hopefully these videos can help people decide on whether or not a surgery is right for them.
    Before Surgery I considered myself an athlete who has a very physical job and lives a very active lifestyle. I injured my back squatting 315 lbs for reps and my 1 rep max at the time was 475.

    Hey Ryan, D. Corbin here. I stumbled across your video series while doing some research. I’m 13 days post-op and had L4 - S1 disectomy/fusion with laminectomy. Tomorrow is my first post-op with my surgeon. Your videos are great and I’ve gained from the content and personal experience. If I may, I’m looking for content on post-op activity-workout information. Being a coach potato is not my deal.

    I'm getting my discectomy next Tuesday and I am pumped now! Thank you for taking the time to post this. It's almost impossible to explain to people who haven't experienced it, just how excruciating the leg pain is. I had microdiscectomy on june 22, 2024 and it's August 7 today. The leg pain was immediately gone and numbness in my right foot was gone after 2 weeks. Now that i am pain free i realize how much pain i endured. I am still taking it slow. Walk as much as i can. I cook, work around the house but avoid bending, twisting and lifting weights. I also avoid sitting because i was suggested so. Take a break after every 10 minutes of sitting. In all i am happy and it was the best decision of my life. But i am being very careful and am not rushing to return to my normal routine.

    I had a microdiscectomy 2 days ago. So I had terrible leg pain and could not sleep for more than 3 hours tops, Cocodomol helped quite a lot for me but it is terribly constipating so you8 have to eat masses of prunes etc.
    At the moment most of my leg pain has gone but I have been warned that in 10% of cases the exact pain will come back. Basically they do another MRI and put you back into surgery. I now have a pain in my femur area higher up than before. But is is more like muscle ache. I also have numbness on the top of my foot.
    I feel very delicate. I am not taking any pain relief now since I am not so much in pain but just very sensitive and fragile. Frightened of tearing the stitches.
    The quality of my life was very low leading up to surgery. I have also received a lot of conflicting advice on what I can and cannot do, eg some say I could run a marathon and in a year and lift weights others say change your lifestyle.

      @@adiqibanez2999 so it's been about 6 months. For the first month i just walked. A lot. 2-3 miles the first week, then up to 10 miles per day. Then I started biking and light weights and mobility/core exercises. At about 3 months I was biking and hiking unlimited. Now I lift weights but modified (vert light squats, no deadlifts - but otherwise basically back where I was). I have no pain on a daily basis. However I'm not 100%. I haven't tried any fast movement / pounding stuff like running. I feel limited when I try to jog across a street. I played tennis recently and the sudden starts and stops were not good. I would get a mild shock of sciatic discomfort- nothing too painful or lasting but I had to play slower and more careful than I liked. Hopefully this will go away at some point. Overall absolutely glad I did the surgery because I was load out on the floor at the end and the surgery provided immediate relief. Hoping I can run again at some point, but if not I'll make due. (I'm 53 and probably more active then 95% of people my age even now)

I also have a bone spur near the same spot as the herniation. I am doing better than 6-8 months ago but still have to be extremely careful with everything I do. I just had my second micro discectomy in four years. I’m a 37 year old man, 180lbs, 6’1”, and real fit. But I just have weak discs from bad genetics. A few months ago I had another mri that showed a fully sequestered disc at l4-5. I didn’t hesitate for surgery after trying steroids and injections and PT and chiropractor all with no relief. I had constant pain for weeks. Pain killers let me sleep for exactly three hours at a time. Post op the pain is gone! Still some drop foot from nerve damage but that happened last surgery too so I think it’ll come back in a few months. To anyone hesitating, they’ve been refining this surgery for thirty years or more and a lot of the problems have been worked out. Take care of your core but if all else is failing, and you do have extruded or sequestered disc, this surgery will give you your life back. Also when my discs were bulged before extrusion an inversion table helped a lot. Ps. DO NOT let the chiropractor twist your lower back if it is bulged or partially herniated. This latest episode I partially attribute to a chiropractor that didn’t bother looking at my mri and exasperated my situation.

      Byron C. -- Great advice about the chiropractor. In the past when I’ve tweaked my back I have gone and they helped. This time I knew something was different and refused to go and boy was that the right decision. Neurosurgeon said my MRI showed a very large bulge and if I had gone to one it would have most likely ruptured. I’ve had 2 steroid shots, a steroid pack, block that lasted 2 weeks. Now I’ve decided this is the best action.

      @@deirdredelaney90 I'm 3 and a half weeks post op of my 2nd microdiscectomy. It CAN take up to 3 months. But you should feel alot less nerve pain or numbness / pins and needles around the 3 week mark. Everyone is different. Depends how long your nerves were compressed for? I just had my second discectomy this month 3 days ago. The first discectomy wasnt successful. And now I fear this one isnt successful. I know its only 3 days but I do not have any improved leg pain at all. Its not even the leg pain thats concerning me it is the fact that I still get the same pull in my buttock when I move my left foot forward. I dont understand how if there is nothing pinching the nerve how I do not even have 1% increased mobility.
    This is really a low point in my life. I wish I chose a different doctor. This surgery is supposed to have a 95% success rate and I had two of them...

      I’m so sorry to hear what your going through :( I’m going for my surgery next week and I pray it will be successful! Do you think that it’s possibly nerve damage? Even if they removed the issue of the slipped disc, it could be that your nerves need a little while to settle down and heal, but you can also maybe try daily vitamins, physiotherapy and light exercises for now. I know you may be at a really low point, but try to stay positive and eventually it’ll get better :)

    I’m scheduled for a L4/L5 S1 Bilateral Decompression desectomy March 21st 2019.
    My BMI is a little higher than it should be, but all of my levels have been healthy, my BP has been a bit higher with my pain due, down my left glute all the way down to my toes on my left leg.
    I currently weigh 276, I am 5’11” and I have played sports both in high school and in college. Before my back pain I’ve gone to the gym, weightlifterd/powerlifted , swam and played basketball for cardio. About 2 years ago I was weighing about 230 with a lower BMI and feeling great.
    How should I approach post-op, diet/weight loss and working out. I know everyone is different but how did you and when did you start to introduce back in the weight room and more of a workload in training after surgery? I want to lose the weight and I want this surgery to be a success and not fail myself

      @@FatNinjaTurtle Hey Andrew, yes this pain will go away eventually. It is about 2 years since my surgery. My observations so far are:
      1. You have to be very active or else, the pain can return momentarily once in a while.
      2. This surgery can result in a “flat back”. We need to be active to avoid that. Else, it will result in a very stiff back in the morning when you wake up and also can give you cramps like that of a marathon runner. Again, not everyday but once in a while.
      All the best and happy recovery!

      ... buddy martin listen.
      Walking is good after microdiscectomy but listen walking miles just days after surgery is not appreciated.
      Well drs tell the patients to go and do full on with their lives with daily walkings for miles.
      But literally many people heal well and can walk enough by a day or two after surgery and recover well for years.
      But for others walking that much in so short periods after surgery and getting very active at job or house and start bending so soon can cause problems.
      According to me we should start things slowly.
      People have no patience and want to be 100 percent healed in days or weeks after surgery . But bro listen it's back injury . It's not joke. Take things slowly.
      I think leaving your favourite stuff for few months is better than suffering again...
      Well still its matter of luck many ppl have had their MD,s in their 20s and still doing good in their 50s or 60s.

      How did it go?

    • @MeSing2U
      @MeSing2U ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cordell- well... I had my first microdasectomy on March 30th and the pain never went away. I switched doctors at the same hospital. This time I got the chief surgeon and had another MRI which showed a very large piece of disc pressing against my nerve. He didn't even ask, he immediately scheduled surgery and I had another one on August 3rd. After that surgery when I woke up, my surgeon was standing at the end of my bed and the first thing he said to me was, "Mrs Mitchell, I do not understand how you were able to withstand the kind of pain that you were in. Your nerve was literally embedded into the bone.". He explained that the first surgeon could have missed it because of where it was located, also I know he had an older MRI. And the second doctor said that during his surgeries he always uses the nerve hook (or some kind of surgical tool) to check to make sure there's no other pieces of disc where your unable to see. I don't understand the total mechanics of it but I kind of get what he means.
      My answer to his question was that I wasn't able to deal with the pain. I had so much trouble getting people to understand the pain that I was in. I think I had 5 ER visits between the 1st and 2nd surgery. So now my pain is manageable with medication, but I'm going to have to get a spinal stimulator put in because of the nerve damage and the remaining pain I'm having. But I will take this pain any day over the original pain.

    • @MeSing2U
      @MeSing2U ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cordell- by the way, they were very concerned that I had something called Cauda Equina. This can lead to paralysis if it's not corrected right away. My advice to people that are having severe pain to where it affects your daily living, just don't take no for an answer and make sure they do something. Take someone with you that knows your situation that can be your advocate. Try your best to take notes of when it started, what it feels like, what makes it better, what makes it worse, etc... and if you start losing bladder or bowel function you immediately go to the hospital and tell them.
      They kept trying to give me different medications by IV and then send me home. In a very short time my pain would be right back to where it was again. I really don't know what more I could have done for myself. Most hospitals assume that if you're there for back pain / nerve pain that you're looking for drugs. I told them I want my pain to go away and so they needed to find out what was going on. I'm just so thankful that I switch doctors by recommendation of a friend. He was literally a godsend.
