      1. Sand neck with some 300'ish grit. Can remove all laquer down to bare wood if you wish.
      2. Apply some boiled linseed oil (boiled is important). Let sit for 16-20 hours.
      3. Wetsand with 1200-2000 grit, using 4 parts mineral spirits, 1 part linseed oil resolution as lubricant.
      4. Repeat step 2 and you're done!

Thanks Rocco - that's a big step in the right direction. What I do is to use the green Scotch Brite first, which I'll call "Medium" and then go over that with 3M Fine (re-brown) and Ultra Fine (grey) pads of the same material to get a much smoother finish. If it's a bare wood finish I put some sealant or finish on it - I use Formby's low gloss "Tung Oil" Finish (NOT pure Tung Oil). Of course you don't need a sealant with a painted neck like you have here.

Rocco Crocco - I HATE steel wool...
After discovering these scotch brite pads a few years ago I will NEVER go back to steel wool, even if they can’t get quite as “glossy” as steel wool, I prefer using finishing papers and/or micro mesh products to get gloss appearance (on the rare occasion I actually want something to be glossy, that is...)
The mess from steel wool is just too aggravating for me (!!!) Never gonna get those stupid filings (that are *impossible* to remove...) on pickup pole pieces EVER AGAIN...!!

graham kelly - it wouldn’t “ruin” it per say (you can always “re-gloss” any finish you want if you have the right finishing papers and/or “micro mesh”) but it’s just additional *work* is all (if you don’t like the satin finish these type of Scotch pads provide - I personally love satin finishes on just about everything, hardware included!)
