On today's Steam Deck video I will go over how to get PS3 / PlayStation 3 games running on your Steam Deck via RPCS2, including required bios / firmware files, game formats, how to use Emu Deck 2 (EmuDeck 2) to facilitate the process and most importantly how to start enjoying PS3 games on Steam Deck today!
Again I recommend getting a Dock for your Steam Deck as the process is MUCH easier that way!
But the Steam Deck is proving to be an amazing retrogaming handheld video game emulation machine and I love it!

This is basically what mid-2000’s PlayStation wished the PSP was, since it used the PS3 menu style and similar disc format, and got some ports of PS3 games.

PS3 was one of my favourite systems ever. Ridge Racer 7, Christmas Day 2007 is one of my best gaming memories. I have the huge, White system.

"the ps3 is advanced architecture" is just a nicer way of saying "the PS3 has worse spaghetti code than a Valve game"
Advanced is the polite way of saying “it seemed good on paper”
I mean if you look at MGS4, a game that utilized the PS3 to its full potential, it’s pretty damn crazy in my opinion

oh is that why so many developers had issues developing for it??? i remember the bayonetta developers had to outsource it and it was bad LOL i wonder if that’s partly why
The cell / SPU architecture was quite complex and complicated. When handled correctly it could do great stuff…but getting it all running in tandem efficiently was not an easy task
Lots of PSN games run really well on the steam deck: Outland, Zuma, Zuma's Revenge, Go Puzzle, Calling all Cars, Peggle, Majong, Tetris, etc. Some games like God of War Collection, MGS Collection, Jak and Daxter Collection play smooth, but use up a ton of power. You'd be better off playing those games upscaled on pcsx2 with retroachievements.
Power consumption is always something to worry about

Yeah compatibility isn't 100% yet with RPCS3 but the games that do work seem to run very well. I have tried Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, God of War HD Collection, and After Burner Climax and Daytona USA from the PSN and they run perfectly.

Steam Deck specific or Win?
If I launch this from emudeck it doesn’t seem like any hotkeys work… would this be different if I opened it from the application itself in desktop mode? Or does ps3 emulator not have hotkeys?
I wont lie though, Final Fantasy XIII, to me, was a great use of the PS3, although playing it on my Steam copy on the Steam Deck makes it feel like it's still a VERY modern game, because the visuals, even after all these years, are still stunning, and the story is incredibly underrated :) and the Stean Deck is reviving a lot of gamers' lost love for gaming, including mine :D
Steam Deck has been awesome to both play modern games and relive dozens of classic systems. Best of both worlds
On The Steam Deck I Tried To Put MK9 (MK Komplete Edition) Onto it Just Like This and it Had No Sound and INSANE Lag/ Frameskip Issues. PS2 Emulation Works Properly and if Anyone Knows a Fix Reply to This. I've Tries Renaming it .ps3 and It Still Doesn't Work.
How did you get MK9 to work?? It always works for me for like 2 minutes then the game stutters, slows down then Freezes all together :(

How did you get Mortal Kombat 9 working so well? I've played the game for many hours to get shaders to compile but it's still at 20-30 fps. Would you be able to share your custom configuration if you made one?
If its that bad, you might as well emulate the vita version. I get a solid 60 fps in-game using vulkan gpu

I know there is no way to currently purchase on steam as it's been delisted. But if you can find a way to play the PC version it works FANTASTIC on steam deck. I'm lucky enough to already own it and recently played through the story mode to get ready for MK1

Our steam decks are all pretty similar hardware/OS so can we share our shader caches? Anywhere to find/share them so others dont need to deal woth the stutter? Pretty sure steam shares the shader cache for pc games on install/update
That’s a really good question. In theory yes the cache should be portable

You can backup your shaders on other pcs

I cant figure out what im doing wrong but my games do not show up on RPCS3 and when i try to "add games" it tells me the "PS3" folder in dolphin "does not exist" i've followed step by step and even tired just the ISO but nothing seems to work :/
You are putting them in the proper folder yes? Per the tutorial

Weird. Ill ask around. That’s the way it’s done. Maybe go into emudeck on desktop mode and reset the emulator config for PS3

Hi, I’ve wanted to play fifa 17 and the game runs and opens well. In the menu it runs steady and everything is perfect. The second I start a game the audio lags and stutters and the gameplay goes into slow motion even this fps is still 40-60. If I go into the pause menu everything fixes up. Once I un pause it goes back to slideshow speeds. What can I do?
Wait for improved emulation or Deck 2.0. I’d have to check on desktop but it might be either imperfect emulation or just needs more raw horsepower. Not all PS3 games will run well on Deck or on any system
the games load up fine but i get an error msg of "registration of trophy system could not be completed: and then i get kicked back to the main emulator screen. how do u solve this on the deck?

Do I have to download the ps3 firmware update from a pc and then transfer to my steam deck with a usb? Can't I just download the firmware from the desktop mode browser on the steam deck?

When I open a ps3 game on the desktop mode the game open and everything fine I put the game in full screen but cant control anything. There something im missing it's like im in the game but still controling the desktop of the steam deck
You need to switch input modes to go to controller input. Google “how to change input mode steam deck” as I can’t off the top of my head remember the button combo
For the people who don’t have an pc just use your steam deck to install the firmware. That’s just what I did

So I was able to get games running and working well but nothing shows in emulation station. I only have the tiles showing in my steam library. Any help with this?

I'm using this to play Peace Walker HD at the moment, and plan to try to get MGS4 running at some point--apparently it IS possible!--but I'm wondering: usually I do most of my roms setup through EmuDeck in order to have individual games launchable in Game Mode. Once I have RPC3S all setup for Peace Walker, for example, can I go into EmuDeck and set it up to launch in Game Mode as well? I'm assuming so, but I won't be able to mess with my Deck until after work in the morning.

I’m trying to get skate 3 to work on this and so far I’ve been successful. However, I’m only able to launch the game in desktop mode, not gaming mode. When I try, it says that I am missing firmware. I don’t know how that can be true because the game launches just fine in desktop mode. Please help me out.
Reset the emulator in emudeck. The config. Sounds like a file pathing error
@@VideoGameEsoterica you’re right. I installed rpcs3 from the discover store, but it seems like emudeck was trying to use a different installation of rpcs3 to run the game. I had to go into that one from handheld mode and install the ps3 firmware, as well as set the directory for the game. Works great now.

Any rerason why my games won't show up when I parse in Steam Rom Manager? I have a Red Dead GOTY iso whih I mounted with PowerISO, copied the extracted files into my PS3 Emulation folder. I can get it running through RCPS3 on Desktop mode 9Extremely choppy, but I'm working on that), but when I parse on Steam Rom Manager, it doesn't show up there. Problem being, I have to launch RCPS3 in Gaming mode and load my games through it.
Perhaps the file name? Is it just a jumble of nothing?

I tried to change default config from RPCS3 and also doesnt changes. Only suggests XBOX 360 layout but it doesnt works. Why does the track pad or joystick not work when using the RPCS3 app? I have to use the touch screen to navigate the program on my steam deck.
On desktop mode? No clue. My trackpad worked fine
when i added youtube or twitch or whatever to steam library it does that u just have to change the controller thing to web mode or whatever and then it works better

If you are saving in game it should persist. You talking save states? You’d just set a custom button binding on the steam deck handheld OS controller reconfiguration screen. Set one of the back trigger buttons as a combo of control and S
I tried to install the firmware I got on the playstation website but I got a fatal error "RPCs3 has abnormally terminated Thread id = 22". Can anyone help me out

@@pratik7850Hey man I have found a fix! Looks like there is an issue with the steam version provided with emu deck. I uninstalled the steam version, and went to RPCS3 official website with firefox and downloaded it there. After that, the ps3 update should work. Lmk if you were able to get it to work!

It’s because steam deck is a 16:10 aspect ratio where PS3 is 16:9. So it’s never going to fit perfectly

Is there any reason why when I load any games, it "plays" into the opening developer logos, then immediately freezes not even a second after boot up post module loading?

@@VideoGameEsoterica its weird the emulator works perfectly fine for say "the bigs 2" but doesnt work for "NBA jam". However both games work well on pc.
It’s a diff build for Linux so seeing differences between the PC / Windows executable Vs this isn’t that odd. There is not perfect parity in compatibility

@@VideoGameEsoterica Thank you. I realize PSN roms tend to be a little more tricky than iso dumps. But I figure they would work better since they are usually small games. And some times compatibility can depend on not just regional differences, but also the format of said game. But I didn't think I could get 3D Dot Game Heroes working, since only the Japanese version is labelled as playable in the official compatibility list, and I don't speak or understand Japanese.

Dragons Crown is a game that works very well on Steam Deck; however I tried Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction and the FPS was just not good enough.
But just the fact it started is kind of incredible. Maybe in a year or so I can be playing R&C on my Steam Deck which would blow my mind honestly.

Because what you just said reminded me of how people keep saying its over for the Steam deck because it's more powerful but people seem to forget that power means nothing without community.
Even though it will technically be stronger for emulation, I bet if you traveled 5 years in the future, PS3 emulation would be better on steam deck purely because that's where people put their effort to optimize

Under roms > ps3 it says skate 3 (usa) (en,Fr,Es).7z
Its not showing anything on the emulator. And it also didn't say copying games.

FYI you can 100% install the ps3 firmware directly from the steam deck you do not need a computer
Do you really need another computer for this? Why can’t you use the desktop mode on the deck?
You can and I mention it in some tutorials. But most users will have a PC and their familiarity there will be greater. I plan for the “most prevalent use case”

Yes I just use windows knowing it’s what most people are comfortable with
I got a rom (SF x Tekken) which came with DLC in the form of a PKG file. How and where to I put it in order to unlock DLC? Do I need to extract the PKG file? If so, can I do it on the Steam Deck, and with what app?
You need to add the DLC in desktop mode via the emulator itself. It can’t be done via handheld mode
@@VideoGameEsoterica right. I tried extracting but got an error message. Is there an app I need to download in the Discover app that can extract pkg files? I can extract the rom fine, but within the extracted files, there's a PKG file. It's driving me nuts.
