Indigo Series Part 3; Indigo Water to Indigo Paste

  • It took just about a month for the almost 3 gallons of liquid from my indigo leaf extraction to reduce down to a quart of concentrated indigo pigment.
    It's a slow process and patience is an essential part of the equation, but that patience is well worth it when I am rewarded with this blue treasure.
    Next will come the vat building process and the magic of dyeing with indigo, but for now, I'm reveling in this small success.

    Thank you for the great video series! I live in a cooler climate, but we have very long days in the summer. I think the Japanese indigo would do well here too. Where are you growing?

      Thank you! I live in the mountains of Western NC, currently showing as zone 7a. I think J.I. would do well for you. This year our first frost was mid-October. I covered my blooming Japanese Indigo plants and they're still hanging in there. We have several days of below freezing temps coming and I'm going to cut my plants back tomorrow before the rain. Fingers crossed the blooms have been pollinated and seeds have formed ...

    Thank you so much for making this video and showing the process of indigo extraction! I have the tropical indigo plant locally and just starting to learn how to extract colour from it. Would love to learn how to make watercolour with it and dye handmade paper. Looking forward to your next step 🙂

      You are so very welcome! You might want to look into the Indigo Pigment Extraction Methods FB group ... tons of good info and a superb group for sharing.

      @@tendingahandmadelife thank you! Had a look and it’s interesting indeed. Will continue exploring, still looking for the hydrated lime and PH strips

      @@smilingsunlight if you're in the US, you can get the lime in a couple of places. It's sold as either 'pickling lime' for canning or in garden centers as hydrated lime for garden amendments. I have a pH meter, so not sure about the strips. Maybe a chemical supplier like for swimming pools or similar. Good luck!

    Can one build a dye vat directly from the extraction vat? Im looking to do a fermentation (artificial urine) vat, if that makes a difference.

    • @tendingahandmadelife
      @tendingahandmadelife  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you can absolutely do that with a 1-2-3 vat. Because of the lime, I'm not so sure about fermentation vat. Maybe see if the J N Liles book addresses that, or the FB group is always a wealth of info, facebook.com/groups/indigopigmentextractionmethods/ I've got a new fermentation vat going. I'm using madder and bran with soda ash to raise the pH. I had one a couple of years ago and then moved, so I'm starting over. I've cobbled together instructions from several different sources, starting with aurorasilk.com/wp/indigo-natural-fermentation-vat/ . I've also gotten a lot of info from Catherine Ellis. Just Google her and you'll come up with a lot of info. I could go on ... my library is chock full! Good luck!

    can't one just strain the indigo through a cloth or coffee filters?

    • @tendingahandmadelife
      @tendingahandmadelife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The indigo particles are very fine, so the weave of most regular cloth (say muslin) is too open. A coffee filter works, but not for the quantity that I'm working with here. The other thing, with regular cloth or coffee filters, they absorb some of the pigment and I want to keep every bit of it. I much prefer using fine nylon, like silkscreen fabric, where the indigo will not cling.

    Hola, gracias, despues de echar lime o cal, mueves de balde a balde ?

    • @tendingahandmadelife
      @tendingahandmadelife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sí. Verter de un lado a otro airea y mezcla el pigmento índigo y la cal. La cal ayuda a que el pigmento se asiente en el fondo del balde.

    • @tendingahandmadelife
      @tendingahandmadelife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      La cal también eleva el pH que es necesario para que se forme el pigmento índigo.

    My indigo paste is teal color. Did I do something wrong?

    • @tendingahandmadelife
      @tendingahandmadelife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe too much lime ... you can rinse your paste to reduce the amount of lime. I haven't done that, but I know folks routinely rinse their paste to get it more pure. I think the FB forum, Indigo Pigment Extraction Methods, might have more info, facebook.com/groups/indigopigmentextractionmethods ... hope this helps!
