Messi ofc isn’t a big character like Maradona but way before he won a major title with Argentina he already played really great in tournaments, he also was just really unlucky in those finals. Most criticism was very undeserved.
“Messi can do better” before WC Qatar he already was the player with by far the most goal contributions in KO of Major Tournaments… in the end Messi carried them to those finals, Maradona also wasn’t that great in his WC Finals.
" *_Maradona also wasn’t that great in his WC Finals_* " I was a teenager in 86 and 90 and watched, taped and rewatched every game of both those WC and let me tell you, he was _that_ great in his WC Finals. If you go back and watch the Italia 90 final, you'll see that if played today, VAR would have overturned the Germany penalty, and awarded Argentina the penalty late in the second half that the ref didn't call. That would have/should have been Diego's second WC. Add the games against Brazil and Italy in that same WC and the "wasn't great" argument quickly begins to seem uninformed. In Mexico 86, everyone remembers the game against England, but for me, the game against Belgium in the semi-finals showed more of his skills. The second goal he scored against Belgium was actually technically better. It's pretty much the same goal, he dribbles past a the Belgian defenders but in the last quarter of the pitch. Then there's his performance in the final against Germany, which until the 2022 final, was in my opinion, the best WC Final, where he essentially willed his team to win after Germany with an injured/or recently recovered Rummenigge coming of the bench, fought back to tie the game after being 2-0 down. Lastly, football historian seem to coincide that prior to Messi in Qatar 2022, there were two players that could be said to have won the WC single handed, Garrincha in 62 and Maradona in 86. I'd say that pretty much says all you need to know of how great he was in the WC Finals.
Argentines could not care less about those NBA like stats. Bring the silverware. Thats football culture in Argentina. Runners up are the biggest losers. A 1st round exit hurts less. Does it hold any logic? No. But that's the way it is.
@@87crimsonJust a comparison of maradona vs messi for Argentina: Maradona: One world cup Vs Messi: One world cup, two Copa Americas, one Olympic gold medal In club level Messi is in another galaxy to maradona in terms of achievement and by the time of 2024 Messi is in another universe to maradona in terms of the achievement for Argentina too 😂 So the NBA like stats indeed came handy to show the level between the two players 🤷
@@rounakvarma3399 Ha, Ha! You can lead a horse to water... sorry, but once this old geezer gets going, it's hard to stop. To be clear; I'm not denying Messi's greatness. He more than deserves all the praise, and in fact, I think most people don't realize what a truly unique talent he has been. Keep in mind that it took his sporting rivalry against another extraordinary player such as CR7 to show us how insanely good he is. For the past twenty years I've considered myself lucky to see him and Ronaldo play. That being said, to read that Maradona "wasn’t that great in his WC Finals" screams recency bias.
Eli made a good bet going to Argentina before the tournament 😂. Tell us who’s gonna win the next one, I’ll put a few quid on it. Great videos as always 👌
Hace 20 años que no jugás ni una final y van a ser 24 y en el medio te comiste 7 en una semifinal de local. Fijate como pasó el tiempo que ahora el que tiene que ver la copa por televisión sos vos
Very lucky that I’m off work the day this is released - Wow! - what a way to tell this story
This is incredible. Thank you Copa90.

Me encanta como contas la historia. La historia del boca river final de la libertadores estuvo muy buena también

It wasn't Messi's fault. His teammates in Argentina were not on the same level as Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, etc

Chapter 2…..the second coming
Thank God he won
Rosario no es la segunda ciudad, es la tercer ciudad mas grande y mas importante de Argentina.
Messi había renunciado a la selección porque los periodistas que en su vida entrenaron lo que él entrena, lo criticaban, lo destrozaban.
Ghana was the worst ranked team in the WC
