Hi, Great ideas. Some years ago, after getting painfully cold thumbs from windchill through the seams in the gloves, I made a pair of plastic bottle shields (one each hand of course) a bit like your pedal covers and they worked!!! I could ride in zero deg C without gloves! I think your shields might help stop (rain) water coming in the slots in the shoe as well.
If you watch shoes with a thermal camera after a cold ride, only the soles and the tips of the shoes are freezing, so these hacks should really help. I will try the aluminium and the bottle hack. Thank you!
@@timeorspace It is like having a superpower + you learn a lot. Aluminium foil inserts do help. Already tested. Goofy shoe-shields next. "Wobs Bike Pogies" are amazing for the hands by the way. People stare anyway 😂
Corrugated plastic* or Kydex** would be better materials for the build. just need heat-gun to shape the plastic. plastic bottle was good for test run. i like what you did. *Corrugated plastic is extruded plastic paneling. somewhat looks like cardboard. **Kydex is plastic that mostly used for making knife sheaths and gun holsters.
Great hack! From my experience, I can vouch that blocking wind is the first step to keeping warm on a bike. Back when I was cool I pedaled a standard bicycle for and to work through many winters in front range of CO and in SLC UT. My fav pedals are plastic fyxation gates platforms, with straps in warm season. I found Neos overshoes very useful for winter commuting, because they blocked wind and water in addition to supplementing sole insulation. Neos also eliminated a need to change socks and shoes after a rushed and long winter commute. Also, the Neos packed small for storm preparedness and the sometimes +50F ride home. About the foil, I am a bit puzzled about how a conductor is adding insulation…is it’s purpose to distribute the intensity of the cleat’s cold spot or possibly conduct body heat forward from heel toward toes? I’m interested in trying aerogel insoles to insulate.
My understanding about the foil is that it reflects infrared radiation. So basically it reflects the heat of your foot back in to the shoe. It should not conduct heat from your foot because it’s not touching your skin.
I will try the Aluminium-idea, seems to be a very good one. As an Mountainbiker, when its really cold, i use overshoes, but the sole of foot becomes cold after one hour of cycling. I'm curious how it will work. Thank you very much Saukki!!
It really does help. Inserting foil under the insole is the convienient way, but if you want to go hard core, you can wrap your whole foot to the foil 😁 But then you have to wrap it every time you go for a ride. Piece of foil under the insole is more permanent solution 😄
Wow, you have a twin brother. you do know most live south of you by a 1000 miles, but if I ever go riding in the snow I'll try you trick to keep my feet warm. I'm not picking on you but is it ever summer there?
I have better experience with several thin socks one over the other than with thicker socks. Plus i was surprised to learn that it helps to not fully pull them up but leave wiggle room at the toes instead as then my toes have better blood flow. Wool socks never really worked because too much air could go through the layers. The bottle hack reminds me of my bar mits on my upright, I love them and I'd choose them again anytime, so I will probably be trying the bottle hack soon enough. I guess you could do the same with a piece of a foam mattress or something.
Yeah, I think anything which can block the airflow will work. I’ve actually never used wolly socks while cycling, because my shoes are not large enough for them 😬
The major temperature decline is through the metal of the pedals & cleats. You can make a cover out of insulating foam as shown in my video from 2011: th-cam.com/video/wqitYa50Mho/w-d-xo.html

Yeah, I think they do. At least they are stopping any snow 😁
(We have’nt had any rain recently, but few snow storms 🥶)

My nerve endings confirm the findings of your camera! Cool tool!

I never wouldve thought to use plastic bottles to block the wind thats a nice cheap idea. I do the foil hack i learned that from gcn.
For winter try to use Russian woolen high shoes, that is "валенки ". Due to be made of wool they have moisture out but are really warm.
Corrugated plastic* or Kydex** would be better materials for the build. just need heat-gun to shape the plastic.

Great vid and usfull too.
I miss the feld wool inlay sole.
For -10C or less i use winter boots (felt socks) with 1 or 2 points higher. No clip
Its working very well on handlebars. Gloves with pet bottle shield .).
those pedal shields make a recumbent more aero too. probably
I use a food freezing bag, put feet in before clipping in.
I use orthopedic pedal binding ratchet for my recumbent. It’s a bit heavier than my SPD clipless pedals but i can wear any pair of shoes with it.
How not to get cold feet. High Self Esteem! Great video!

Al foil is not very heat conducting in its plane because it is so very thin. But good for heat reflection and air insulation.
The best hack to stay warm cycling in winter is to move to Florida. It's February and my air conditioner is running. 😃
Brilliant hacks! Top tips, Saukki!
Thanks!
