CAD. Cardboard Aided Design. Practice with cardboard that is the height of your frame rail making a pie cut in it until you get the desire drop you want. Don't overthink it. It really is simple math. Measure twice cut once.
Honestly it's still too early to tell. Now that winter is set in the trailer is parked. I have yet to try loading my corvette onto it. That will really be the deciding factor of if I should have went more or less. If you are just loading tractors, trucks, or jeeps you can really go as much of a drop as you want until you start dragging the trailer on the ground which was another factor in my comfort level to stop at 3.5 inches.
Thanks for checking it out Johnny. We finally got to try this out last month with the low car (C5 Corvette and is lowered) and at first I was thinking I may have put too much dovetail in it but it turns out it works perfectly. I still have to employ a few other tricks to get the car on the trailer without dragging stuff elsewhere but that goes for any trailer you put corvette on to. I'm confident I could drive my samurai on and off of this trailer without the ramps like all the cool off road guys do.
Thanks Jacob. I think just about every tool in that video is 25-35 years old lol. Good luck on you gooseneck! We just got the new deck on this thing after a lot of other work done since this video. It's just about usable.
@@PNW_Car_Mods hey man there is nothing wrong with using old tools. There's a reason those tools are that old and yet your still using them. The tools of today aren't bad but there not overly built like they used to be. More than half the tools in my garage are twice as old as I am.
@@PNW_Car_Mods you did a good job.. I wish I was better at welding. I have some patch panels to do. Also check out that sub count, you are almost at 2k!
@@JackofAllTrades1 Patch panels usually aren't too bad to do with proper techniques. I much prefer to weld heavy steel though. It's super forgiving. My most hated thing to weld is exhaust tubing. Total pain in the ass. That being said I don't have any formal training either. We're almost there. 2k bored people out there lol.
Most people that are going to watch this video won't give a flyin rats ass about an intro lol. If anything it will make them click off the video. CAD really cuts down on mistakes and do overs :)
I just replaced the boards on a 20' trailer. Now I'm thinking about doing this modification. Thanks for showing how it's done.
So far no regrets. It did exactly what it was intended to do. Thanks for checking it out.
very nice, going to be a handy trailer
I hope so cole. It's been a long time coming.
Nice booger welds! 😀
Yes they are!
Nice work Mr. Black.
Thank you chuck. Much appreciated.
Question how did you figure out the space you have to cut in order to get the dove tail in the height needed?

When you are all done with that mastepiece of a trailer, can I borrow it? Nice work and a very useful trailer mod!
As long as you don't drag it through salt you can use it anytime lol
@@PNW_Car_Mods DEAL!
Was 3 1/2in enough or do you wish you had gone to 4 1/2?

What did you use for cutting the frame?
5 inch angle grinder with a thin cutoff disc. Very accurate over using torch or plasma cutter.
Did you pie cut so you had angles on both sides?
I'm not quite sure what you are asking?
Nice work!
Thanks!
Well done thanks for sharing

@@PNW_Car_Mods might in the future add jack legs to the back of the trailer for support while loading, trust me on this, been there.
Nice shirt. I have the same one.
Get in the zone. Autozone. lol
Thanks for the video
Thanks for checking it out. I am surprised at how many views it has gotten.
Looks good to me.
Thank you. It turned out very well for minimal effort.
great job
No regrets. We've used this trailer a bunch this year and so far I think the dovetail job has been all pros and no cons. Thanks for checking it out.
You can tell a lot about a man by what kind of tape measure he uses. I'm doing this yo a 23' gooseneck that I bought for moving my skid steers

Looks good gonna use your math.lol
Absolutely. Very happy with the amount of drop. I wouldn't go anymore lower though.
