Mataha Island in Berau, East Kalimantan, is one of the most important nesting sites for green turtles. Berau itself is part of the "Coral Triangle" region where the highest marine diversity in the world is found. However, sea turtles, which are legally protected in Indonesia, are still hunted by many people for food and accessories. Without supervision and protection on the island, the continuation of this poaching will reach the point of species extinction in sea turtles.
