Need to use 3mm Plywood for the surface. That way you can cut the circle the same size as the lid. The the lid will set in the cutout perfectly for alignment. That is a good way to make jigs for zipo lighters or anything you want to laser. Just cut that shape out. 3mm basswood is cheaper and easier to cut the birch.
I have standalone 10W laser engraver, but until this day I thought that I have to buy expensive paint in order to be able engrave metal. I have to try your approach with candle, that is some clever way to save some money. Btw I never engraved any metal even with that special paint, but would be interesting to try both approaches for comparison 🤔
