I planted Goldstrum myself this year in 2 seperate garden areas, and yes, very easy plants to care for. Like any new plantings, they need their good drinks of water until well established. Hi David. Black eyed Susan’s are definitely beautiful. Here in my zone 7B, my problem is they get severe black leaf spot which is quite unsightly. I have two gold strums that got struck with it. Unfortunately I’m planning on ripping them & plant something else.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching and posting your comment.
      When you get a chance, can we suggest that you re-watch our video again?
      And this time, look at the variety (Rudbeckia 'American Gold Rush'), that David explains about near the end (at the 9.43 minute mark).
      In our trials, we have been really impressed by its performance, and particularly by the fact that it shows excellent natural resistance to the "black leaf" diseases issues that your plants are getting.
      With your existing plants....., what David suggests, is that there's a couple of things you could try. First in late Autumn, winter or early spring, trim back your plants and try to remove all of the old infected foliage and debris (this will help to reduce new infection next year). Then mulch around them, this will help to retain moisture in the ground, so that the healthy, drought-stress free growth will be better able to deal with the disease. But more importantly then that, putting down the fresh layer of mulch will help to cover up any disease spores that might have over-wintered on tiny fragments of diseased foliage. In other words, removing as much of the old foliage as possible and starting off the season with good hygiene, will help to reduce disease spread.
      Also, be careful not to over fertilize, because sometimes over lush plants can be more prone to disease issues that ones that are grown leaner. And the last and very important thing, is try to keep the foliage as dry as possible by directing water in at the base of the plants and not overhead. You see, the disease spreads on wet foliage (especially in muggy, humid summers), which is why David says he likes to water in the mornings, rather than in the evenings.
      Finally, we think you have already subscribed to our channel, which is great, thank you for that. I have grown Goldsturm for at least 25 years and also worked for Martin Viette’s nursery on Long Island, NY ( Mark’s father). Martin hybridized many Hostas and Hemerocallis.
    Any idea why my Goldsturm have been developing brown splotches that look like rust a few weeks after they start blooming each year?
    These videos are so wonderful, the plants, the histories, and the singing of old sea shanties❤️

      @OverdevestNurseries  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, it is great to hear you are enjoying our efforts and finding them interesting and helpful.
      There's two possible things that might be causing your issue - Angular leaf spot and Septoria leaf spot. Both overwinter on old infected leaf tissue, so its important to cut back your plants and do a good clean up of old foliage in autumn, that will go a long way to reduce the infection.
      Good air circulation is also important, so rowing your plants in an open, well ventilated spots will also help and especially important is not watering them overhead.
      Wet foliage (especially in the evening and at night) is how the spots spread, so when watering try to direct the hose in at ground level and avoid automatic irrigation.
      The last plant featured Rudbeckia 'American Gold Rush' - is resistant to this, that's what David was talking about when he mentioned it's incredible, natural disease resistance.

    Every time I have tried Goldstrum it has developed black spots on foliage. Although it won’t kill the plant it looks bad. This year I switched to Hirta and have not had a problem despite our high-humidity in VA 7b.

      This is why David was so pleased to introduce you the last plant featured Rudbeckia 'American Gold Rush' - it is resistant to this and doesn't become affected.
      There's two possible things that might be causing your issue - Angular leaf spot and Septoria leaf spot. Both overwinter on infected debris, so a good clean up of old foliage in fall will go along way to reduce the infection intensity, good air circulation by growing your plants in an open well ventilated spots will also help and especially important is not watering them overhead.
      Wet foliage (especially in the evening and at night) is how they spread, so gardens with automatic irrigation are vulnerable.

    My black eyed susans got run over. 😢 I plan to move them now so is there a way to store them over winter after I've dug them up after they are done drying out to replant next year. And when should i replant?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They can be lifted and moved now. In fact, this is a wonderful time for transplanting them. The tops won't look like they grow much, but the soil is warm after the summer and the roots will start to establish in their new positions so that next spring, they will quickly grow out.
      If for any reason the new site is not ready you could lift them and temporarily "heel them in", by just digging a trench and covering the roots of the clumps. Then early next spring, they can be planted out in their permanent positions. They are hardy and actually store better outside, so don't bring them inside where they are likely to get dried out or try to start growing.
      Hope this helps.

      Take a look at the last variety that David features.... Rudbeckia American Gold Rush 👍👏😉 We've been very pleased with its disease resistance and performance. In all the years we've been trialing it, we have never seen any disease issues.

      Absolutely, they can be divided now in the Autumn or again in early spring. It helps to keep them lush and vigorous and of course give you more plants to make larger drifts of color too. We don't have a specific video on how to divide Rudbeckia, but if you watch this one on Coneflowers - the technique and principle is the same: th-cam.com/video/1dGw_IAFLD8/w-d-xo.html
      We hope this helps. Also have you subscribed to our channel?

    The rabbits like my little goldstar at one end of the garden but don’t touch it at the other end. Ruins my symmetry 😒

    Why do you only talk about color & design. How about value as a pollinator plant. Good for birds, bees, help for caterpillars.
    Expand your view man ! Value to the ecological food web!

      Thanks for your input, that's a valid point and one that David is well aware of.
      In fact, as you scroll through several of the other videos he has posted here on our channel, you will hear him frequently explain about the value and necessity of pollinating insects, butterflies, larval host plants and bird sustaining plants too.
      This is something we agree whole heartly with, so thanks for raising it.
