A very thoughtful, insightful examination of a bygone era. TBH as a middle aged person with much life experience Ricegum’s whole TH-cam journey strikes me as a concerted effort to overcome/counter and compensate for all the insecurities and issues they had growing up (which I imagine growing up as a poor, Asian kid of immigrant parents in America probably had its challenges). He was pretty much living the fantasy many of us has as young insecure, awkward teens who felt like we didn’t fit in and had no hope of ever being part of the cool popular crowd so maybe striking that common chord was part of his popularity. I’ll admit I missed and never fully understood the popularity of all these young, brash, obnoxious TH-camrs who thrived on petty in fights and meaningless drama but then remind myself that their audience is most likely naive, inexperienced yet highly passionate tweens/young teens who don’t know any better and likely enjoy the childish antics mixed with the fantasy ideal of adulting.

sir, you have read my mind! Are you from SoCal? I think he may be Taiwanese, not sure. I'm flip. I remember very well this type of character when I experienced culture shock when I was a first year uni student, but glad I dropped out and found my bearings at a two year and got away from this type. They were majoring in some type of engineering, very well likely went to private schools and lived in the nicest neighborhoods so they had inflated senses of self importance it seemed. And I knew enough to these students, it was like continuing of HS to them so they acted like that, even cutting me off and stealing a parking space that I had claim to. The guys seemed to think it was funny and even mocking waved bye at me. That was a rather rude awakening to the new world I stepped into. Also playing basketball with these guys was reason to hate these asian yuppies even more, because a lot of them showed micro aggressions, like checking the ball by laying it on the ground, totally douchey thing to do, man.
The worst thing that happened to RiceGum was his success. Earlier in RiceGum’s youtube career he seemed like a genuine, humble guys. The success went to his head.

What is interesting to me about RiceGum is that, unlike almost every other TH-camr from his era, he never really had a downfall. Obviously, he had boatloads of controversies that ruined his image to most people online (lootbox gambling, for the kids coin, content cop, etc), but none of these controversies ever actually made him lose fans. He experienced a gradual decline in views over time, but as you point out in the video, he was still averaging 2 million views a video when he quit, which is definitely way above average and not him "irrelevant." Additionally, unlike all of the OG TH-camrs like Tyler Oakley and Gabbie Hanna he made fun of for being "irrelevant," he did not slowly fade away into obscurity or mental insanity, but instead chose to retire while he was still successful. All of the people who made fun of Rice in the content cop ended up having their own downfalls that made their fanbase turn against them (Ian, H3H3, Boyinaband, Jacksfilms to some extent), while to this day RiceGum's fans are still waiting for a potential return.
Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. Ironically all the “good guys” from back then are going through their declining phase while ricegum hasn’t cared about that for years and is likely still rich. Truly one of the lucky idiots of all time
Ricegum is a troll and so is his audience so nobody really cares about controversial opinions its all about having a good time like in the old days when nobody caree
It’s because his content is lacking any real substance and takes zero intelligence or emotional bandwidth to watch, making it perfect mind numbing content for the NPC masses and young children/tweens who don’t care about controversial topics.
That Ricegum - Gabby drama was the most cringeworthy thing. Two narcissists. So ironic he built his career off calling other people cringeworthy when he is the definition of cringe.
When you have no character or integrity, your presence (or lack of it) will be irrelevant and unimportant to the general population. Ricegum is just lucky that there are so many children with his level of maturity on the site which helped him blow up
It will always amaze me how rich and famous you can become while having no real talent or redeeming qualities. He was literally just roasting kids on tiktok
There's still a lot of them like that. It is kinda amazing how many people flock around some extremely uninteresting, unimpressive people. And there are a lot of very interesting, impressive people in the same space. Some are definitely popular but a lot aren't as much as some of the shittiest. Very strange times
"Uma Kompton was later exposed for being a troll account" Idk if I'm just cynical or desensitized but I cannot imagine a reality where I would see that account as anything but a shitpost lol
Whats sad is it took the exposure for anyone to consider that the pictures were of a real, unassuming woman. She was so upset with and disgusted by the memes.
Not saying that Rice's lyrics are good but compared to other youtubers lyrics they aight, they got some multirhymes and some simple wordplay and similes, nothing I'd consider great but it's kind of decent, I think his voice makes it sound worse than it is 🤷
this is the most disappointing video ever. Not because turkey tom did a bad job covering the content but because Ricegum didn't fall due to his own scandals and behavior instead he went away out of boredom and lack of motivation rather than a actual consequence
@@Axlken214 So, Drew is reading it like the sign is telling him that the road functions correctly, instead of warning him of road construction. It's a shame how far he fell from his days in his parent's basement. I remember being obsessed with his channel in eighth grade when the whole school would wait for one of his uploads. I guess we were all little kids and couldn't see through his antics at the time.
I remember watching early days Rice in middle school. I fell off watching until one of his these kids must be stopped popped up in my recommended. There were videos of kids just having fun and he shit on them. I, as a naive kid, commented saying some of the things he said about these kids just living their life wasn't nice and they were just having fun. I got bombed by his fans. His fans were telling me to kill myself, threatened to be doxxed and that I wasn't getting the "joke" (I was like 12). At the time of getting those replies, it was a dark moment in my life already (not getting into it as it has been 7 or so years), so getting those replies really dove me in a darker place. At that point I deleted my comment, and stopped watching him all together. And thank God I did.
I remember when woahvicky made her disstrack on him and like 85% of it was just her saying "ching chong bitch". Man the things you could get away with was wild.
The biggest reason for people getting upset about the Gabbie phone thing is his hypocrisy. Yeah, it's fucked up to smash someone's phone, but the REAL kicker is he told a story in one of his videos about how he tried to make a sex tape with a girl without her knowledge by secretly setting up a phone hidden away to record it, then he had the audacity to get mad that someone filmed him in public without his consent.
Rice Gum is someone who lives in shadows. He attacked rich kids because he was jealous, then when he got money he attacked people who had more. He is an empty shell of a person who has tried building a personality with money. It worked with kids because they are growing as people and easily influenced. It worked and he made a lot of money. That was his goal.
He's one of the best TH-camrs of all time, ever. Proving anyone can be a sex offender, with a mild speach impediment, and mental acuity of someone missing vital pieces of their frontal lobe can make it on TH-cam.
I love your commentary. Usually when people try to make documentary-style videos, they end up over-writing and end up sounding dumb. I find myself cringing instead of enjoying the mind-numbing entertainment. On the other hand, you take the time to write clear, concise commentary and deliver it well. Kudos!
The issue with the gambling really is my biggest issue with him and other channels even today. If they were promoting another addiction to children, like smoking or sex, it'd likely be a bigger issue, yet it's completely fine to promote gambling. I've never had an issue with gambling personally, however, I've seen people genuinely ruin their lives and it starts so abruptly.
kinda reminds me of twitch allowing people to stream them playing slot games and games related to gambling but obvi don't promote anything sexual or explicit
It’s because for companies in general, it’s basically either playing with your revenue, not being technically advanced enough to know how to take shit like that seriously (the justice system for example), or actually caring about the wellbeing of people either for reputation reasons or not. Let’s not forget that there’s also neglectful parents that are just dumb as bricks. They know of the classic “p*rn bad” idea and it’ll stay since it’s so easy to understand it being a bad thing, but put them in front of a slot machine and they wouldn’t even be aware that they just spent their entire retirement & dream house money on something that their child could easily get a hold of as well and do the exact same thing. It’s why crypto/NFT’s is (or was) still doing so well for such a long time. When you’re a baby, you get treated as vulnerable, even if they don’t realize that they’re underestimating a baby lion.

I think content like rice gum’s, making fun of kids for being kids has made a lot of kids really self conscious. At least that’s how it is for me, im 15 and videos making fun of “cringey kids” has made it hard to just be yourself. A lot of people talk about how quickly kids are growing up, and I think that videos like that has contributed so much to that
@@misanthropicservitorofmars2116 ehhh i disagree. Some people are traumatized by far less. I feel thats the reason why theres a age restriction for media, theres no telling how children and teens minds change from consuming media, and they tend to notice it way later in life.
Ricegums humbled beginnings for streaming really began on MLG’s website. MLG back in like 2013-2014 or so had professional cod players and other MLG related influencers sign contracts to stream only on the MLG website. The whole optic crew, and even a few other teams were on board. Basically, to sum this all up, Nadeshot and optic harnessed most of the viewers (generally 5-10k.. which was good for then). Ricegum was also streaming on the site at the time, and would occasionally interact with Optic players’ chats. It became a regular habit for viewers to head to Ricegum’s streams when optic finished scrims or whatever (streaming) to see what ricegum’s goofy ass was doing. He started to get 1000s of viewers regularly, and kind of began his fanbase/community. Not surprisingly, the MLG streaming platform failed and when he came to twitch his popularity doubled instantly. I know I proabably got some things wrong, if so, correct me. I’d like to catch up with someone who actually remembers the MLG.tv days because no one remembers that shit 😂 Also I want to add, I know that MLG still does their thing, but I do not believe they hold contracts for streaming on their website anymore. Also I know there were other games besides cod that MLG supported.

RiceGum and other creators making it big through bullying shows how being a bully is a lucrative business in the industry where many children who just find it funny will never think twice because it's not their consequences. It's kinda sad since it happens time and time again with creators who have a huge child following. From Leafy, to Rice, Jake Paul, Andrew Tate, etc... And TH-cam going corporate with it's creators made a lot of them force to change their content (H3H3, Iddubbz, leafy, etc...) making a lot of their audiences believe they've given up on their content and moving to others who have those similarities.

Our boy tom has a team these days
The issue with the gambling really is my biggest issue with him and other channels even today.
If they were promoting another addiction to children, like smoking or sex, it'd likely be a bigger issue, yet it's completely fine to promote gambling.
I've never had an issue with gambling personally, however, I've seen people genuinely ruin their lives and it starts so abruptly.
kinda reminds me of twitch allowing people to stream them playing slot games and games related to gambling but obvi don't promote anything sexual or explicit
Pokimane and twitch thots have done far worse.

It's kinda sad since it happens time and time again with creators who have a huge child following. From Leafy, to Rice, Jake Paul, Andrew Tate, etc...
