- Join me today for a daily Farm Vlog from our Southern Illinois farm as I take a road trip and pick up a home made Disc-Chisel plow from my friend Cameron Haney, from Mulkeytown, Illinois. This home made Disc-Chisel plow is extremely heavy duty compared to what you could purchase on the market these days, which is why I gravitate towards these kinds of home made, heavy duty implements! After picking up this home made disc-chisel plow, I stopped at Rural King and got some tractor CAT 2 implement 3 point parts so that I could fabricate this implement so that I could use it with my John Deer imatch 3 point quick attach system. Join me for the day trip and some farm shop fabricating to see if I can successfully convert this new implement in to a quick attach setup so that I can use the new disc-chisel plow on some of our land management projects! Yes I think I finally have the right implement. Gonna beef up those pins a little bit more yet though. We got more rain today lol.
You did a great job boxing in that pin. It should hold. I've pulled a 5 shank ripper in farm ground with no issues but it had been farmed a long time so no unforeseen roots or rocks per se. It was a trail type. The only 3 point implements we used were plows. Everything else was trail with hydraulic lift cylinders off rear remotes. That is a nice heavy implement. Look forward to seeing it in action.

Looks like a nice tillage tool! I had a three point hitch disc once, and it didn't work very well either.
Hopeful this one is going to work better than just a straight disk

MIG weld is for granny's
You should be able to find a pin with a collar on it going through both pieces of steel so you do not need to weld. They are made exactly for this application.
A hitch pin from the other side the correct length will work just the same.
Yes i agree but when I bought the pins I thought there was much more clearance than there actually was. There is literally maybe a 16th to and 8th inch of clearance on each side after grinding down those tabs. But you're right that would have been a better option but I'll make this work. Thanks

I've found discs only work good with extra weight mounted on top and the discs in the most aggressive setting. I like the spring tooth plow best followed by a disc plow
Well, I'm really looking forward to trying this one out! It has a lot of weight with the heavy 4 inch steel tubing frame! Plus I've got extra weights that I can add to it if need be. We'll see!

Only you Kapper would find Mr. Haney Right from Green Acres! ❤️😂. Surprised he just does not show up at your home just at the right time. Maybe your to young and never watched the show. He really made that heavy duty unlike the tv Mr. Haney. Joe if you could design a quick attach with all kinds of adjustments that fit anything you make a fortune. Should you accept that mission. Did you see the article about the guy down in southern Il that rebuilt the old water mill he had bought in 1986 from out East? When he retired he started working on it and it took him 7 days a week for two years to rebuild it and make it work again. I heard the place people can visit to see it is for sale.

Joe I would weld the nut to the frame then weld the nut and pin together and then take a piece of metal from the nut to where you reinforced the frame to suck it all together tight

Never had any luck with discs in a straight line .I always have to offset for them to dig/ break ground. P.s. it is better to chisel first ,then double offset disc on hard ground.

re those hitch pins,..maybe if you had welded a longer threaded rod to them so that they can be bolted securely to both those braces,..then you wouldn't have to weld those pins on
the outside at all. In other words, make the threaded portion of the pins go through the two brace pieces with double 'stover' nuts ( locking nuts ) by welding on some high strength threaded rod .

I wonder if you can get real long pins, then you could use the other holes as well.

Joe at the 2:28 minute mark your implement buddy has an older 9 tine ag chisel plow on his lot. Dont know if its for sale or not but its very similar to mine (no disc blades) and I absolutely LOVE mine. I turned up the 2 end tines on my 9 tine chisel plow (making it a 7 tine chisel plow) so my tractor could more easily pull it to 8 or more inches deep. You may want to swap back??
Man I absolutely love this one! There is nothing left for me on this one, it cuts, rips and starts leveling big stump holes and swales! This thing rocks!
I am in Illinois as well and just seeing this looking for something to pull behind my Polaris general side-by-side for a little food plots do you know does he still building stuff like this? That looks like it be something about perfect for what I need.
I don't think he makes stuff for UTV's and such, just tractor implements. Of course he does make stuff custom order so you could always ask him. I think it's called Mulkeytown implements or something similar to that. But they make all kinds now for UTV's and ATV's I'm sure you could find one pretty easy. Thanks and best of luck!
You could have used cold rolled shaft and run it all the way across through all the mounting plates, no pins needed. Do those pins get weaker by welding on them?
They definitely do once you put heat to them like that.
Yes that's a good idea and I still may try to do that period wish I would have thought of that myself lol. I'm still going to beef it up some more. But I've never had one break from welding it just yet.

Looks good Joe will your arms not go wide enough to do a thru and thru pin? Kinda where you welded that plate. It's just a Thought. And any update on CJ? Sorry i see it's for a Quick Attach.

Curious why the discs are in front of the chisel plow spikes/rippers instead of the other way around since the rippers break the ground best and the discs break up the large dirt clogs and turn over the ground.
Not sure but it obviously works because that's how the big farm implements are set up
Perhaps it's because the chisels catch a lot of roots and stuff

So why not weld the nut on the backside, thread the pin into the nut and jamb nut it on...

I bet you bend em. Look forward to seeing Phil LOL. In all seriousness it looks weak on the mounts . Its the leverage that you going to be pulling on a non boxed pin. You got too much power. Might work on my tractor but yours sticks to the ground too much and I predict it folding. Now because I’m a know it all ready to see I work and prove me wrong LOL

This is a disc chisel plow that ag farmers use as well. It’s just a smaller unit that was fabricated. It’s meant to turn over hard ground or ground that hasn’t been worked for a period of time. Should cut into the ground 6-8 inches or more. It’s intended use is not a finishing tool . The disc on front is to cut up trash or vegetation then the chisels will turn over the soil. The disc will help the vegetation from balling up so bad.
Well this is how the big farm implements are and they work. Those chisels will clog up quite a bit with roots and stuff so that's probably why they are in the rear.
Why didn't you just get a hitch pin or bar stock long enough to go through both pin bosses plus a little more. You wouldn't have to weld anything and it would have been stronger. Well live and learn.
I think I understand what you are suggesting, but this was a couple years ago so don't recall. But you are right life is a constant teacher! Some lessons better than others, lol. Thanks

To me that implement is a waist of money. The disc is holding back the chisels from going into the ground twelve to fourteen inches, can’t really tell from the because I don’t know the length of the chisel. The chisel needs to be in front, it will dig deep into the soil and with the disc behind will somewhat smooth the clods from the chisel. Not saying I know everything but I have been around farm equipment Foyt five years and just throwing out some constructive criticism.
yes I tend to agree that maybe the chisels would have been better up front, but this thing was made specifically for chopping up front, such as corn stalks, and then working the dirt. With with my hydraulic tilt I can get them chisels way down, easily 12 inches or more. But it is paid for and is good for breaking up new dirt with roots, but not really finish work. It's always a learning curve. Thanks have a good one
