- The propmakers and designers at The Earl Hays Press have a hundred years of printmaking experience, and today employ the latest in printer technologies to make their props. Graphic designer Carly Graham shows Adam their process for making realistic "leather" bound books, passport, and other handheld props with real texture and tactility. It's a process that leaves us absolutely stunned!

Did they do the Kanamit Cookbook from Twilight Zone, or the Jokerbucks from the '89 Batman? Years back I saw on the Net some money from Metropolis- but that was German. Do they do work for other countries?
I would put the color between the layers of texture so that it is protected but still not at the "bottom" of the clear texture layers. Maybe they can do that, too.

Guys! If it makes your foods taste weird it means the room is *insufficiently ventilated!!* Please get a stronger active ventilation system!
From the shots of the room I saw, it looks like they didn't have any active ventilation. That whole room appeared to be made of cinder block. I used to repair printers and print systems and have seen things like this in all kinds of weird areas and I'd recommend at the very least that they get a commercial vent fan exhaust system. They can get a cheap one like one used in commercial restrooms and that should solve the problem for long print runs. All they need to do is draw large volumes of air out of the room and duct it out of the building.
Yeah, exactly what I thought. this was (and probably is) a problem with office copiers. They started with a little machine that made a few copies and then kept putting bigger, noisier ones in. They they realized that it was hazardous to the neighboring desks.
@@kitefan1 Not quite. HP and Xerox generally start from the top in color and work their way down generating both color and B&W as they go. This is an overly simplified way of looking at it. For Lexmark and Minolta, its a 2 tier system where Lexmark makes the bottom tier devices and Minolta makes the top tier devices. You can still get mid tier devices from Lexmark or Minolta if you want, basically a device that fills both rolls or you can get a device from Minolta or Lexmark that is very high quality usage, but those are rare and in the office world and nobody needs one (although I've seen and repaired some of the Lexmark ones).
@@matthewjbauer1990 I get your point, but I meant more of a progression over time. Back when most copiers were black and white (1980s?) an office area would get a small desktop one that did a small volume and take the large volumes to a bigger machine elsewhere or to a reprographics store. As the machines came down in both price and size the ones in the office areas got bigger, had feeders and so on. They got used more, got noisier and put out more VOCS. At this point they get annoying and unhealthy for the desk-sitters nearby.
It's fun listening to someone like Carly who knows her business so well and can speak about it and is enthused about it.
Love how passionate Adam is even after so many years in the industry creating things. Shows that he where he is supposed to be in life!
There's just something about printing that gets in your blood. I think it's the solvents.

Tested can keep doing videos at Earl Hays forever as far as I'm concerned; I absolutely love learning about printing and design processes, particularly historical ones. I took a look at Walden Font and now I think I have to buy both of the American WWII poster font sets. And maybe the wood type set and the Civil War Press set. I wonder if any family members would be okay with buying me fonts for Christmas...

That was an interesting video, I am curious if that printer could maybe benefit from some venting/air extraction when it's operating based on the effects on food taste Carly described. I'm surprised ruler tattoos didn't ever become the subject of conversation once I spotted the one on her hand, seems like a very practical placement too at first glance.
I love that there are geeks in the world who just love stuff like this. While I'm not a props person, I *love* seeing new processes for "doing things". I love that Adam is often there to share with us. I can totally appreciate a machine that can "print" faux leather book covers. Because, that's just damned cool. My regret about life is that there's only the one of it to live, and I will NEVER get to know all the things, nor experience all the things. Adam is there in a small corner helping us all experience things vicariously that many of us would never have known about in our lives....

One of the great things that Adam Savage brings to interviews like these (remembering also his videos from the Metropolitan Museum of Art) is that he knows the kinds of questions that these skilled professionals are dying to answer!

It’s amazing when you looks back at things you had the smallest exposure to when you were young. You realize that if videos like this existed back then you would have seen potential and got some motivation to continue in that art form. In some ways you’re a little disappointed at the missed opportunities, but in many more ways you’re excited for the people who are now discovering their passions.
Absolutely found this astonishing. Straight up 3d printing on a different medium. So cool. Combining vinyl and uv ink is genius
This is one of those technologies that I hope within the next 5, 10, or even 15 or so years becomes more and more affordable for hobbyists to play around with. Being able to make custom dimensional prints like this is just incredible.
When Adam was staring at the lights as the printhead(?) moved back and forth, my thought was, "Wait, isn't that ultraviolet? Isn't that the same as staring at a welding torch, or the friggin sun?"
She said they eat the weird tasting tainted bananas so I guess it's safety last In this shop.
My absolute favorite Tested videos are absolutely when Adam gets to visit some other person who's an expert in their field and clearly extremely enthusiastic! Adam just seems to bring that out in people; he know enough about various stuff to ask the right questions to get people going, and understand they don't have to dumb anything down…

I work on those same Mimaki printers here in Toronto and have a customer who is a prop maker, it was amazing when I recognized their work while watching Pacific Rim.

@@zachmoyer1849As described in the video, it has a frikkin’ laser beam cutter. Although I don’t know how precise it is, they were mainly cutting out finished pieces.

As a printer and bookbinder by trade, I found this fascinating. The border spacing head vs. tail could be done a bit more centered, but other than that it was really impressive.
That machine is so freaking cool. I'd have so much fun messing with different textures and what not. I'm really into cool textures on books, not only cool looks. Incredible.

I wish i had known about Earl Hays when i was 'still alive'! Working there - or just touring would have been a bucket list topper! Please more, please more, please. (More.) I have so many ideas what i could make with that PRINTER alone! Adam is a great vehicle for this vicarious pilgrimage because he GETs it! He's as stoked as i would be, probably more! My happiness that he gets to live so many of my dreams -- absolutely eclipses my envy! (Please sir, we want some more!)
That's a beautiful machine! I've been doing a lot of work with vinyl cutters lately - cutting shapes out of sticky or iron-on vinyl, or even stuff like Shrinky-Dink film, or using it as a pen plotter - and the prospect of all-in-one 2.5d printing is awfully compelling.
I have seen similar UV printing offered as a service on other materials, for things like electronics front panels or similar (there's a supply house that will do full-color printing on the aluminum boxes you house guitar pedals in); I wonder what the time frame is for such things to be available to the home or semi-pro market.
As someone who works on a lot of printed art/materials this is super fascinating to me!

As someone whose family was in the printing business for 35 years the new technology is jyst amazing.
Uv printing changed my crafting/making world. I love my Mimaki 6042 and have hard ink.
It's really amazing how so many different types of disconnected technologies develop in ways that drive everything forward. As she mentioned the development of 4k cameras and televisions means props have to look much more realistic to be convincing. And along comes a print technology that makes that happen more efficiently to meet that need.
Driving SOME things forward, this will still show digital patterns, so it’s a low run cost effective adjacent to offset printing, not a move “forward”.
Absolutely love these Hayes visits. As someone who spent some time in offset print houses, *(when they spoke of the customer wanting 1 or the other, I saw in my head an old manager storming into the shop screaming WHO DID THIS?!?...it's amazing how silent a room full of running machinery can become...) as well as a fan of the show, these have been excellent to watch! Love all the regular content (hate that phrase...it's art) seeing Adam and whomever geek out over an item, creating a thing, or just doing stuff with the viewers it's all so good, but this Hayes visits? That needs to be a regular thing. Maybe a viewer suggested visit projects...unno. good stuff.

Wow the line is really blurring between 2D and 3D printing. I know FDM/SLA are more like 2.5D but so is this machine. Really cool stuff!!!!
I used to be an offset pressman. How far technology has come! This was unthinkable in my days on the press. I can still smell the IPA / blanket wash / inks.😅
As a former Press Operator at a major newspaper here in the U.S. I approve.

my brother used to work as a pressman when he was in high school and early 20's. (he forged tickets to my HS graduation for me and my friends - not that hard, it was basic card stock with black letters - when it was moved indoors due to weather, so our extended families could watch. we only got 4 tickets each otherwise. we of course ran a few extra to sell outside. I think he made a couple hundred bucks lol) I used to watch him run 4 color press for park district catalogs and pamphlets for all of the activities and classes they would offer each season. it was really cool to see.
I would have looooooved to have a machine like this back in the '90s when I was working in digital prepress.

Use the hell out of the UCJV300 here, the printer they're using. A bit of a maintenance queen, but great results. Cutter is dog slow, but based on the punch pattern on their vinyl, I think they use a Gerber cutter.
The flatbed printers they have like the UJF-6042MKII can print dozens of layers and can print to objects and raw materials like leather. Expensive machines, but fun results.
Yeah. I’m asking the company for this. They’ll say no… but, I MUST 🤷♂️

This reminds me of when I was in grade school and we had to cover our books in brown paper. There was a special way to cut and fold the paper. By the end of the year some people's books were pristine and other people's books were scribbled all over :-)

I do graphic and product design for a small business that has this exact printer, along with an 8x4-foot flatbed version. Mimaki UV printers are awesome. Expensive, but awesome.

Did the UV light bother your eyes any? Like welding but not so bad because you are getting more of the reflection and not directly looking into it?
i have that same printer, minus the clear. I also use Walden fonts, along with Letterheadfonts
