I fly down in South Florida (Miami area) and the immense amount of surrounding lights has presented the same problems you mention here. It can be a little difficult to actually pick apart the airport environment from the rest of lighted area. I've found it helpful to load approaches into the GPS or display "Extended Centerlines" on ForeFlight to easier line yourself up with the correct runway. Thanks for your video, really did learn a bunch.

Hester23BearsCH, appreciate the comment and thank you for watching. I 100% agree with you. Such an easy task I over looked. I very well could have loaded up an instrument approach or visual approach in the 750, as well as enable extended center lines. Thanks for the tip! Appreciate ya following along. We'll be filming in Florida this June down in the Keys. So excited!

@@OneEightyTwoFlyer That’s awesome!! Not sure if you’ve been down already but it’s beautiful. Flying the Miami shoreline at 500ft is pretty fun if you get the chance, you’ll be taller than the buildings 😂

@@Hester23BearsCHx, yes sir! Before TH-cam for us we did the shoreline tour under the Miami Class B in 2019.........We'll do it again when we film this summer...ssshhhh....LOL! Cheers!

Been there done that. Thanks for sharing your experience. I quickly learned to fly approaches or requests vectors for “practice approaches” (even if i did not filed an IFR flight plan ) when (after a long cross country) approaching an unknown airport at night. That removes the stress of having to figure out where the runway is,. Even known environments can be challenging at night depending on surroundings.
TLDR: unless you are extremely familiar with an airport you are flying at night, requesting vectors for an approach can enhance the safety of your arrival and reduce your stress as aviator

Absolutely!! Re-watching this older footage and sharing with you is a great way to learn and critique those crucial skills. I 100% agree with ya. I could have easily asked for a practice approach and loaded up an ILS or GPS approach into the 750 and followed the procedure as a reference and use the magenta line to track to the airport. Great lesson learned and a great pro-tip Flying-doc. Cheers!

Appreciate ya watching Michael! Since I'm not a flight instructor I try to keep the information candid, and somewhat easy to follow. I do ramble a bit....LOL! Thanks for following along and joining us on this trip. Cheers!

Came over from Traveling Robert! , I wonder if the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 would have realistic night detail as it uses Bing Satellite maps?

3:03 The Canadian's FBO story sounds a bit scripted to me. Kind of sounds like they were saying, "Whoops, I hate it when that happens."

Jim, let me tell ya.......Misty and I were very annoyed to say it nicely! But they gave us a business card for free parking on the ramp next time we come up...LOL....Thanks for watching, cheers!!

Btw, I fly a NA 182rg. I noticed you have a Radar pod!? How awesome is that. Would you mind sharing specs about it? When did you get it? Brand? Install cost?

Flying-doc, so when I purchased our TR182 a few years ago everything you see came with her. The previous 2 owners did all the avionics upgrades, new interior, and paint. What I can tell you is the radar works. The monitor is a two color (green) RCA with range and tilt. The antennae in the pod is a 10" full 60 degree tilt and I believe it can see out to 80-100nm.......don't quote me on that. I do not recall the brand but will look it up for you. The previous owners were very meticulous in records keeping. They have every receipt, log, etc. since it rolled off the line in Wichita back in 1982. So I will have a look and get back to you. I'm out of town on business till 1 May. So once I get home I've got to get her into annual (which I plan to film) and will get you more details. Follow us on the One-Eighty-Two Flyer page on Facebook and I'll post an update on the radar there as well as some annual inspection pics.

@Flying-doc Just wanted to follow up with you on your radar question. It is the Honeywell ART-161A The antennae runs about $3,400 bucks and the dome housing varies by mount. The receiver display is 2 color green RCA monitor with tilt, range, and gain settings.

Was this an older flight? I thought the Canadian border was closed. Thanks in advance!

Hi Ben! Yes sir this is the companion video we filmed to O-Canada in 2019.......but honestly I struggled with releasing it because of how the night flight went. But with such a lesson learned from it I'm glad that I finally decided to release it. So to answer your question, yes the border is currently closed but Chris Palmer from the Angle of Attack YT channel found a way to get over. I believe he was allowed to land for a well planned technical stop. So hopefully things will start looking up for Canadian travel soon! Thanks for watching and following along. Cheers!
