IN ADDITION TO Donuts's GUIDE: The Ethereal you see on the heroes on this video is a bug (at that moment). Right now, you cannot put ethereal gems on hero items without ethereal socket or prismatic socket. As for the couriers, it needs to be an unusual courier ONLY; otherwise it is not going to work(you cannot add it anyway).
U need bugged items to do that. And all the bugged items have been bought off the market. One bugged item costs about 1-2 DC(dragonclaw hook). After that you have to buy an ethereal gem which is cheaper compared to bugged items. The costliest item in dota 2 is a bugged dragonclaw hook and there are only 2 of those. So don't dream about making these things you are late on the boat. I was lucky enough to get bugged staff of no from sculptor's pillar, from where all the bugged items originated.

can you only put the "hallucination bleak" at RARE rarity of an item? or anything (mythical , immortal etc)? i am contemplating at getting 2 at least but want to make sure that it is working as of today. thanks
this doesnt work anymore, i tried it. bought a hallucination bleak. it doesnt work anymore. when you try to put a gem in a socketed item. the ethereal gem wont be detected. hence you cant put it in an item.
