This is great! I've set out to build a layout roughly the same size as yours and I had reached the stage where I was wondering was it worth it to carry on. All i was getting was 'This won't work' or 'That's going to fail' but you've been a great encouragement. Thanks for that.
Thank you and just keep plugging away the way you want to, take no notice at all of what the theorists out there say because that’s all they are - theorists. They haven’t been to see your layout, they don’t know your circumstances and they don’t know what you have in mind for your future plans either, so in other words, they know bugger all apart from what they may have done in the past or what they ‘think’ won’t work. Have faith in what you are doing and ignore others who doubt you - prove them wrong!! Good luck in your quest my friend for building YOUR model railway! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham
Hi Les and blimey, can you believe that was three years ago now - where has that time gone! It’s all still running perfectly so I must have done something right!! 👍🏻. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham
You did a great job on the "lift bridge". The levelers are a great idea. Mark added centering pins to our two lift bridge and the work fine too. thanks for sharing, Chuck RVRR
River Valley Railroad Hi Chuck and thanks for the comment buddy - much appreciated sir. Yes, the locating dowels work a treat, I’m glad I fitted them as it stops any lateral moment once it’s clamped down. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
It really is sad how this hobby has been invaded by trolls and people just out to be nasty for the sake of it, I remember the day's when this hobby was 99% freindly where everyone gave their opinion in a nice balanced way, Society on the whole has forgotten how to communicate properly, People have become so engrossed in their phones that nothing else but me me me matters. Great if you have some advice to give or help but do it in the right way and not as an arrogant know it all or as the internet police this is why so many sites have now banned comments.
ROBS TRAINS Hi Rob, I have to admit that 99% of the time I tend to get good, constructive suggestions which I always welcome but just recently then I have had my fair share of folk who insisted that what I was doing was either wrong or that it wouldn’t work which to a certain extent I can understand but they are not here with me seeing what I am seeing plus they don’t know what I have planned for the future development and even when I show it on video to work then they still don’t believe it will work - it eventually becomes very frustrating hence the reason for me starting to loose my patience with them. Anyway, I’m happy with what I have done which I consider to be the main thing. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
Hi Graham oh dear it's a good job they didn't see my old layout with my lift up, I would have been shot at dawn, maybe if they had waited to see how it had turn out and then offered some advice as how they would have done it instead of criticising how you have done it, it works as far as I can see keep doing what you are happy with.
Catching up on your progress Graham, layouts looking really good like the station area great size for shots of running trains, with the station storage area im having an issues weather i put a fiddle yard underneath the scenic board or to have it similar to how you and also richard from new junction has it on the same level but just behind scenics, will continue to catch up on the other videos when i have reached the latest video will look forward to seeing the layout progress cheers Beeton Hough Junction (Dave C)
Beeton Hough Junction Hi Dave and thank you for the comment, well the layout has come on a bit since I did this video, the storage yard is now 4 tracks wide and goes to the very end of the layout, so quite a length to store my fixed rake trains. I think only you can answer what would be best for you to be honest, what I have is ideal for me but that doesn’t mean it would be ideal for everyone else, it’s certainly easy to manage like this rather than having it underneath but I may end up having shelves underneath just for placing locos on which I can just lift up and put on the track as and when I need them. Hope that helps a little. Cheers for now. ............Graham
@@GrahamFoulston no problem, yea i know its each to their own been in the loft for most of today laying track roughly down on some boards working out weather the new layout plan will fit on the pre built side of the layout and i think ive solved the problem with storage and how the boards will setout so fingers crossed when i start to do the frame work and put the top board down i can put the idea/plan into action and hopefully it works. Ill keep watching your videos and hopefully should be upto date soon on the progress cheers Beeton Hough Junction (Dave C)
Beeton Hough Junction Good luck with your build mate, if you think it through before finally committing then it should all work out for you on how you planned it out. Cheers for now. .........Graham
Hi Graham, I've been following you for quite a while but never commented before. I think you are doing an amazing job I loved you last layout and I'm sure I will this one too. I am still just at the base board building stage so not quite as far along as you, but your videos are very helpful and I look forward to many more. Nice work.
Buzzard Lane Model Railway Well Thank you very much for your first comment mate - that’s greatly appreciated sir, as long as you are finding these videos helpful for building your own base boards then they have done their job. Good luck with the build mate and cheers for now. ...........Graham
Hi Graham, coming along nicely, I'm amazed how quickly the new layout is coming together. A nice solution you have come up with where the track crosses the lift-out section too.................I never bothered with dead sections either side of mine, but I think it's something I might have to look into................Keep up the great work, looking forward to more soon, regards Dave.
stretchedits Many thanks Dave, I have thought about the droppers on either side of the lift up section and for a while just deciding how I should wire them up which I now know how to do it so that will be done next week hopefully. Cheers for now buddy. ..........Graham
Great progress so far, I love the hinge system so much I’m going to incorporate it in mine. I’m sick of crawling on the floor to get in. A simple neat solution to me 👍👍
From previous video's, i didn't think the hinge was high enough. I thought the rails would bind which is why I made the point. This hinge alteration lifting the pin center point will now work & it's all looking good, the flap works a treat. Hopefully humidity and paint / glue will not effect it over time which is the real test, I think I will attempt one at some point. Thank you for the update.
Mark Wilson Hi Mark, well I’m hoping that the air con I had fitted and sealing the MDF will solve any of those problems but of course only time will tell I guess. Cheers for now. .........Graham
Love the progress Graham looking great love the lift section gives it a good look and I agree if you're happy with it that's all that matters. You really have done a great job
Simply fantastic Graham, I am amazed by your progress. I love your lift up section, such a brilliant job. As you have proved time and time again YOU DO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Many people would do well to take heed.
Piccadilly Model Railway By John Warner Many thanks for your very supportive comment John, I really appreciate that - thank you. I’m also pleased that you like the lift up section too, that’s great news. Cheers for now. ............Graham
Love your lift out section, really inspired me and given me plenty ideas to think about for my layout which I'm starting in my loft. Ideally I want a small lift up section for access into the central well of the layout rather than crawling under the boards all the time, so seeing your method with adjustable feet, the locking clamps and even the microswitch to provide a constant power is great and certainly worth considering for myself. really looking forward to seeing how new Lakeside progresses.
Richy59 That’s perfect mate, if I have inspired you to make a lift up section for your loft layout then these videos have been worthwhile for just that alone. Good luck with your build mate and just enjoy! 👍. Cheers for now. .........Graham
Thank you for making this video as I was looking at doing something similar. You have done a great job and it’s nice and easy for me to make something like this. 👍🏻👍🏻
Don't know how anyone can pick fault with your work Graham it's a fantastic achievement with your flap very much looking forward to seeing you progress Keep up the good work my friend
David Maguire Thanks David, I’m really looking forward to seeing this layout progress too, I’m really getting stuck into this now and the foam underlay from Woodland Scenics is a dream to work with. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
Lakeside is coming along nicely. This hobby is about creating your own world in miniature, and to do that it has to be done your way. I've taken a lot out of your last few videos as I've been trying to master a lift out section since September time & haven't been able to successfully. From the ideas & info seen on Lakeside I now have a better plan & idea how to install my section. Don't let the negatives bring you down, as the positives far outweigh them. There are a number of channels on TH-cam I have learnt a lot from since being back in the Hobby & yours is one of them. There is no right or wrong way in my eyes, there is only a it works or it doesn't work way & yours works :). Keep up the good work, enjoying watching Lakeside being reborn.
Roberto Riccioni Thank you very much for the kind comment Roberto - it’s greatly appreciated and I couldn’t agree more with you. I have never said that what I do is the only correct way to do things and I often mention this, you are so right, there are many ways to do the same job and get the same result at the end - what I do is just my interpretation and once again you are right - if it works and I’m happy with it then what’s the problem? I research many things before committing, taking parts of ideas from others and some of my own, there is no right or wrong way as long at the end of the day it works! 👍. Cheers for now. ..........Graham
Excellent progress Graham. The lift up section is a fine bit of engineering and it must've been great fun messing around with it until you were happy with the final result. All part of the fun and very rewarding that it works so well. Cheers, Paul.
Great job Graham! Don't take any notice of the " know it all's". We all have our own way of doing things. Looking forward to seeing how the layout progresses over the next few weeks/months.
Very nice layout and construction you have going on, the trackwork looks great. I never seen a "lift-up" that big but you did an awesome job at building and securing that ans so what you see the hinges now, you can always find a way to hide them! Be creative. Thanks for sharing Muse
Well done Graham, by the way, I had some adjustable feet left over, and what a brilliant idea to use them to adjust the lift up section for flushness, I have been messing about with packing to get track alignment, hope you don’t mind, I have now installed said feet, wow it can be really fine tuned, well done, hope you don’t mind. Glad your doing what is right for you, I’m afraid you are always going to get, “Anally Retentive” people gassing, on what you should or should not do, they don’t know your environment do they👍
Mark Mattocks That’s brilliant news Mark that you have used the adjustable feet on your lift up section and I’m really pleased that it worked out for you too - excellent! 👍. Cheers for now mate. ............Graham
Hello Graham, Great video's just starting to build my first ever railway, later this year (total novice) thanks for your time & information .Will keep watching lot to learn
Hi Graham, I`ve said it once & I`ll say it again. It`s your layout , It`s our layout what we do right or wrong. We will learn by our mistake`s. Keep going mate your doing a grand job. ...All the best, TONY from RHYL [GRIFFIN STATION.
Great video as always Graham. Maybe the reason for the massive of comment is due to the fact lift up or down sections are a very emotive subject. I would never have done it your way, but you are so right...it works perfectly. So I have a new prospective if I ever need to build one again. I echo your sentiments in the video...'nuff said!!!!. Cheers, Bob
trainmanbob Thank you Bob and that’s what makes this wonderful hobby so great, we are all individuals with individual ideas and thoughts and are free to express ourselves in our own way - or should be! As you say - ‘Nuff said’ 😉👍. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham
Great progress Graham. The big compass reminded me of the ones they used to use in school! - and that wasn't yesterday! ;-) With all your improvements I am sorely tempted to try a move from the loft to the spare room, but it wouldn't come to much after I had been hit around the head with a frying pan! Cheers
Nice Job Graham. I've been following you for ages and think it's awesome you take the time to upload videos to TH-cam so we can all enjoy what you are doing. I get as much enjoyment from your model railway as I do my own. Thankyou.
Thanks for sharing, I’m going to have to have a lift up section for access in my layout when I start, I can honestly say I’m going to steal your idea. Best one I’ve seen, well done. Cheers 😀
David Hyde Thank you David, having four tracks was probably one of the main things that I wanted on this layout, it gives me so much more as to being able to run at least four trains all at the same time. Cheers for now mate. ............Graham
Hi Graham i have a lift up done just as you have with hinges and dowels mine has been in use 2 years now and no issues what so ever. So dont listen to it wont work it will Regards paul...
It wont work because not all the track is laid and powered up Ha ha, tis really good that 4 tracks went down nicely and plenty of room to re-use the old scenery will look smashing, nice progress Graham.
It's looking great, Graham, not that it was ever in doubt. It's amazing the difference it makes having some platforms and station buildings in situ. Have a great week.
Simon Williams Thank you Simon, the platforms will be redone to fit the new layout but I can use the basics from them. Cheers for now. ............Graham
Onno Mulder Many thanks Onno, hopefully then next video will show more track laid and even a couple of trains running! 👍. Cheers for now. .........Graham
Hi Graham it's looking great mate well done.I have a lift out section to get in my shed but the shed is starting to lean to one side.Your lift up section is spot on. if its ok with you im going to do the same thing .Like you said if it works leave it. Stuff the whinging buggers.
clive roberts Many thanks Clive, the lift up section took a while to get right but I’m glad I persevered with it - it works like a dream now. Good luck with yours but I’m sure it will work out fine too. Cheers for now. ...........Graham
Love your "down to earth" style Graham. I find your videos both interesting and informative. Although I have a modest 6 x 4 layout, I can get some good ideas from yours. Keep up the good work.
Hi, Graham. Off to Thailand on the 9th for 3 weeks. Doing the bridge on the Kwai, Hellfire Pass. Bangkok and then the beach. Not a fan of them or swimming in the sea as it is full of fish wee and thing that want to eat you. @@GrahamFoulston
Well done Graham, the layout is coming on nicely and will be great to see, when you get the main runs complete and running test trainS. Just take your time and it will be the outcome you want. Kind regards Martin Coalbridge Junction.
north west trains models Thank you and pleased you like the lift up section. There is another update (Part 6) now up should you wish to view it. Cheers for now. ...........Graham
It all looks fantastic, works a treat and is exactly what you wanted, enough said on that matter. I am always amazed at the speed you manage to achieve, be it carpentry or track laying. At least I now know where Billy's Bridge is going to be located. I am thoroughly enjoying watching the new Lakeside being built from the ground up.
TheDiomedef16 I can’t leave Billy’s Bridge off bruv, that is such an integral part of our layout plus the Manor House of course. 😉. Really pleased that you are enjoying the build mate, I certainly am. Cheers for now bruv. ...........Graham
That is looking so good. I can see you have put so much thought into this and it looks like its all paying off with what you have achieved so far. Looking forward to your next update as i am finding it really interesting seeing how a layout gets put together. Hope your week goes well.
Anthony Bird That’s a really kind thing for you to say Anthony and it is greatly appreciated. You’re right, I have given this a lot of thought, not just the layout but the room as well but I’m sure that there will be things I have forgotten but hopefully nothing that can’t be fixed. Really pleased that you are finding this series of videos of interest - thank you. Cheers for now. .........Graham
Wow you are humming right along ,it was just a week or two ago it seems when you tore it apart to start over . But then again it could be the magic of video. Looking good. Thanks
jim smoter I have to admit Jim that it does seem to be going together really well - much better than I thought it would. Cheers for now. ..........Graham
Another great vid Graham, amazing how much you have done already, wish I had done a lift up bridge, I’m still crawling under mine, that’s a great job and stuff the critics, that works perfectly, looking forward to seeing the first running session All the best
Hi, Graham, I bought one of those Circle ⭕️ with a pencil in it to draw huge circles with it, and ideal for what you have use your for, that why i bought one to, Lidl and Aldi both sell them, as there weekly specials back in early January but i also went in Home Base this last week and i noticed they had them to, slightly high priced but those are three shops in this last month i’ve saw them for sale. Great YT channel 👍Thumbs up 👍 to you, you do a great job 👏👏👏👏🔔👍
Jamie Smith Many thanks Jamie and I remembered after someone else suggested that it could have been Lidl and it was, I just couldn’t remember at the time - nice handy bit of kit. Cheers for now. ...........Graham
The Growler - Blackwood N Gauge Layout I really do like the look of the track going through the platform area - just what I wanted it to look like. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
Tremendous progress Graham, that lift up section is the dog’s bollocks mate. Probably the best one I have seen here in TH-cam land. New Lakeside will soon be running again cheers Colin
Colin Busby Many thanks Colin and yes, I think you’re right, I don’t think it will be that long before we see some trains running! 👍. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
I think you have given me the idea, but would you be able to use let say recessed kitchen cabinet hinges instead. This is so that you don't see the hinges. Please advise.
As you know Graham, I have yet to start on my layout and from what I have learned from you with your method of a lifting section, is good enough for me. Yes there are many ways of doing this, but if it works for you like the way you have demonstrated, then this is the way I shall do it too. Repositioning the hinges makes a much neater job of it as well. You have made a good start Graham and I just want to say Great, Well Done, and Thank You for showing us your method of fitting a lift up (bridge/section) or whatever you may wish to call it Cheers Geoff
Geoffersh Many thanks Geoff and you hit on a good point really, I do say often enough that what I do may work but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the only way or the correct way but if I’m happy with it on my layout then for me then that’s what matters. Having said that then I’m pleased that you feel that you could adapt this kind of lift up section for your layout too. That’s great to know. 👍. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
Hello Graham, great work reduing the Bridge, well, liftup section, Haha. I am in need of a section like that, and hope You don't mind that I will copy Your work. When done I should try to shoot You some pics. As always, great work and looking forward to Your next video. Ray in US
Well things coming together nicely, some great ideas for the lift bridge for sure :), do your layout the way you want and works, isn't that what the hobby is about, enjoyment and showing each persons creativity and designs. Ok on that note I don't like the green tape on your boards can you do it in blue lol Look forward to more updates :)
Hi Graham. Well I for one think you are doing an amazing job look how far you have got you will have trains running in no time. So just ignore all the snipers I think your lift up looks really great, I mean at the end of the day all you need it to do is lift up and cut of power and when down is not move about, and I think you have done that so it a feather in your cap Graham. I look forward to your next video. Regards George...
loving the station so fare. just a quick comment about the line behind the retaining wall are you going to put a town seen above them. just think it may add a bit of intreast to the area. keep up the good work Paul

wesley walker Thank you very much Wesley and to be honest, I had forgotten about this video but it was nice to see it again because it shows the layout in the very early stages of build and has made me realise just how much other work I have done since - it seems a long time ago now but is in fact only just over a year ago. Please go ahead and steal the idea, absolutely no -Robles at all, I don’t have the sole right to have a lift up section! 😂😂😂👍🏻. Cheers for now mate and stay safe. ...........Graham

Your layout looks great, very sturdy and well planned, thankyou from Wairoa in New Zealand
jed la haye Thank you for your kind comment Jed, that really is much appreciated. Cheers for now. ........Graham
Wow a lot of progress I wish my dad and I could build layouts that quickly and have time to do it. Great work... Austin
Thanks for sharing
Muse
Looking brilliant mate! Made me look at my layout differently and I've decided to take it down and start again, look forward to the next video!
Really enjoy your videos and look forwards to seeing the layout as you work on it
Well done Graham, by the way, I had some adjustable feet left over, and what a brilliant idea to use them to adjust the lift up section for flushness, I have been messing about with packing to get track alignment, hope you don’t mind, I have now installed said feet, wow it can be really fine tuned, well done, hope you don’t mind.
Hello Graham,
Great video's just starting to build my first ever railway, later this year (total novice) thanks for your time & information .Will keep watching
lot to learn
Cheers
PS - love the foam underlay. Wish I'd thought of that before I cornered the world's supply of cork!
Cheers 😀
Excellent update on the layout I look forward to seeing your next video update
You could make an allotment scene around the hinges and have a poly tunnel effect over them, might work!!!
Coming along really well Graham - I do like the 4 tracks between the platforms. Looking forward to more ... David
So dont listen to it wont work it will
Regards paul...
It wont work
because not all the track is laid and powered up Ha ha, tis really good that 4 tracks went down nicely and plenty of room to re-use the old scenery will look smashing, nice progress Graham.
Lovely lift up absolutely fine and robust great job ! John Chichester.
It all looks good to me mate. I will do it the same way when I do another layout some day as I still have all my stuff to start again.... Glen
So much progress in such a short space of time. The lift up section looks very impressive.
Very nice update Graham!! Do not let them get to you!!!! Awesome job! I'm curious about the next video. Cheers Onno.
Onno Mulder Many thanks Onno, hopefully then next video will show more track laid and even a couple of trains running! 👍. Cheers for now. .........Graham
Well done Graham, looks good and you’re certainly a better carpenter than me !! Can’t wait to see it running. Jon
Hi graham yes saves on the knees crawling under unit again thanks for your inspiration ted
Edward Lake Very true mate and the less crawling we do the better! 👍. Cheers for now. .........Graham
Love your "down to earth" style Graham. I find your videos both interesting and informative. Although I have a modest 6 x 4 layout, I can get some good ideas from yours. Keep up the good work.
You're making great progress Graham, the layout's coming together nicely. Best, John
so much work done already.well done keep it up
Fantastic progress Graham! - Really must get on with mine!
Graham, it's great and, your planning is great. You are right to keep the atmosphere of the 'old' Lakeside'. Well done Graham, Nick.
Nigel Carter Many thanks Nick, much appreciated mate. When are you off to Thailand? Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
The station area will be good with 3 up and down lines , your joinery skills are a credit to you .......Peter
very nice progress looking forward to the next update i like the way uve done the lift up section especially very nicely done
north west trains models Thank you and pleased you like the lift up section.
Fabulous. Great progress. Steve
Your lift out section looks great, giving me some ideas for my layout

LZDEN Thank you very much for your comment mate - it’s greatly appreciated. Cheers for now. ...........Graham
your most welcome Graham, looking forward to seeing more of your excellent work.
LZDEN 👍👍
Great to see the track going back down. Liking the through roads in the station area. Well engineered lifting section.
You have made a good start Graham and I just want to say Great, Well Done, and Thank You for showing us your method of fitting a lift up (bridge/section) or whatever you may wish to call it
Cheers
Geoff
Ok on that note I don't like the green tape on your boards can you do it in blue lol
Look forward to more updates :)
Awesome graham and your lift up section does shut with a satisfying click 👍 progress is rapid mate
loving the station so fare. just a quick comment about the line behind the retaining wall are you going to put a town seen above them. just think it may add a bit of intreast to the area. keep up the good work Paul
love the progress Graham, really amazed by the progress you have done. Are slowly watch your updates. As always do what you want ! ignore people wanting to you to remain a novice, your not. and for any dislike ignorethem for allthe good likes. Good onya mate !
Good for you graham I think it’s a very good idea of a pull-up section if ok I might steal you’re idea enjoy the videos. 👍👍
wesley walker Thank you very much Wesley and to be honest, I had forgotten about this video but it was nice to see it again because it shows the layout in the very early stages of build and has made me realise just how much other work I have done since - it seems a long time ago now but is in fact only just over a year ago. Please go ahead and steal the idea, absolutely no -Robles at all, I don’t have the sole right to have a lift up section! 😂😂😂👍🏻. Cheers for now mate and stay safe. ...........Graham
Graham Foulston you too Graham n you’re family stay safe n keep modelling n look forward to next video 👍👍👍

Dan Lawrie No worries mate. 👍. Cheers for now. .........Graham

Edward Lake Blimey Edward, you are only just up the road to me, I used to work in St. Ives before retiring. So glad that your lift up section works too mate that’s really reassuring to know - thank you - it will stop you having to crawl any more to get into the layout! 👍. Cheers for now. ..........Graham
