    And so it begins. A masterclass in basic joinery, measure twice, cut once. Keeping the mobility of the whole layout to the fore. A great watch and not too long at all, I learned a lot, as I am sure, many others did too. The start of the new Lakeside and we were privileged to witness the birth of the very first module.

      TheDiomedef16 Many thanks little bruv and pleased that you learnt something from it. Yep, I can remember my dad teaching me to measure twice and cut once very early on in my life and it never left me - I still manage to screw up sometimes though! 😂😂. The first module is now built as you say so I am hoping that the rest will be reasonably quick as I now know what I’m doing. Cheers for now buddy. .............Graham

    Will be a pleasure to watch the new build, just starting out in model railway and model building so hope to learn a lot. Now I just need to build my shed, line it and aircon and we will be moving forward. Cheers

    Just saw your latest video when you were pleased to have reached 10k subscribers, well done on that achievement! Came here to start from the beginning as I start building my own model railway building for the first time. I look forward to using your videos as a resource, thank you!

      Steff Thank you Steff and pleased that you found the videos of interest, look around at other channels too because we all have different ways of doing basically the same thing! It's very difficult to construct anything that will prove to be stable with the standard of timber we can source economically in the U.K. The mistake I think most home constructers make is to use too heavy section material - there is very little weight on the structure after all. I would recommend using engineered timber - plywood - and sourcing it from a reputable timber merchant where different grades of timber are available. It is easy to rip down plywood sheets to provide whatever section of timber you need and using adhesives strive to achieve the most stable and lightweight structure possible. Very stable and lightweight framing is possible without using inferior grade softwood that is continually moving seasonally. Plywood is available in grades suitable for most situations and works out economically when ripped down to smaller sections. Using an air tacker and modern adhesives, construction is rapid and repeatable. Well done though Graham, your staying power is admirable.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      fraser hardmetal I’m sure all what you say is true but as I am one of those amateur DIY people then I have to settle for the stuff at B&Q - I wouldn’t know any difference to be honest. Plus, most of the materials I am using are from reclaimed wood from the previous layout, I can’t afford to go out and buy all new materials. I have only bought some new this weekend to give me enough with my left overs to hopefully complete what I have planned. Thanks for the comment though buddy, it’s much appreciated. Cheers for now. ............Graham

    Loved your old layout but going to enjoy this build, I agree I have used both ply and MDF and found ply was a pain in chipping when cutting at times and warped a lot more than MDF, so now MDF I have used this on many layouts even unsealed and had no issues in warping personally. But comes to owners choice at the end of the day :). Look forward to watching the progress of this

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sean Baldwin Totally agree with you Sean, like you, I have had no problems with MDF at all and again like you, found using plywood it tends to splinter so much but hey ho, each to their own materials to use - not right or wrong using MDF or Ply. I have progressed since this video was made so hopefully another update at the weekend. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham

    A great start Graham but you did make me shudder at one point when you drilled the smaller piece of MDF on your legs 😒.
    Do I assume the wiring will be hanging loose underneath or will you drill circular cutouts through the cross members to avoid snagging it when moving the boards? Nice work at the start of the new venture. Cheers, Bob

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      trainmanbob That drill looked a lot closer to my leg than it actually was Bob, I really don’t fancy drilling through my leg! 😄. No, the wiring will be going through holes drilled into the crossmembers but I won’t be drilling those holes until I get nearer the time of running the wiring. Cheers for now. ...........Graham

    i used 2x2 square inch for legs and 1 and a half x a half inch for all battens ,top was old notice boards i found MDF creates to much dust when cutting it ,and you need the lightweight MDF as the heavy is heavy

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      malcolmone1 Well I guess each and every one of us uses all manner of different materials to build our layouts, as someone else commented, there is no right or wrong way, just what is suitable and available to you and what you can afford. As long as it’s stable for the environment it is located in then that to me is the important thing. Cheers for now. ...........Graham

    And so it begins. Great news! So two modules will make it 96" long which is what I have decided upon too, plus corners (which will add another 48" or so for me), though only 24" deep, my house is very small. I will be keen to see what you do with your space as I'm guessing your overall size will be quite modest compare to many on TH-cam.M y layout sits in a cottage in Scotland, it won't be until Easter before I add to the fiddle yard that is only 96" x 15", you will be finished way before me!

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Creeping Jane Yes, my layout is actually quite small compared to a lot of the folk on here but that actually suits me, I think if I had a layout 30 feet long or more then I would find it too daunting and very expensive to buy all that track for too. I’m happy with the size and apart from that, you just have to make do with what you have. I have constructed another module today so I would like to try to construct a corner module tomorrow - depends what time I can get up in the train room. Cheers for now mate. .............Graham

      @@GrahamFoulston Hi Graham - looking forward to seeing your corner sections and how you will join them to the main modules - I might be cribbing your ideas on this. My fiddle yard has curved points leading out at both ends and will connect via nominally 3rd and 4th radius curves to the front section at one end. The other end is more complicated as I will have four tracks going from a 30" radius down to a 21" (3rd) radius and then through two points to return to the two to cuved points on the fiddle yard. Best wishes - Peter

    One thing I've noticed Graham particularly since being on TH-cam is that there seems to be as many ways to build benchwork (baseboards) as there are modelers. There is no right way and no wrong way only the way that works for you. I'm sure the new Lakeside will rest upon a good solid foundation. David.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Atkins Crikey David, you have hit the nail right on the head my friend and I just wish that some folk would realise that, I have seen so many various ways people have built their baseboards and as you say, we all have our own particular way and as you say, as long as it works for you then really that’s all that matters - and of course that it’s stable which I hope this will be. Just like a house, get the foundations right and the rest will follow. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham

    Nice job Graham. I totally agree with you the MDF is fine, in the right conditions - which you have. My only other comment is - invest in a second cordless drill/driver. Even a cheap one from the likes of Lidl will save you time from swapping bits between drill and screwdriver! I used to do the same as you, except the bit I took out of the chuck would instantly hide itself and I'd spend 5 minutes searching for it before I could continue next time I needed that bit! Happy New Year!

    Good to see the start, Graham. This is going to give you so much more room than your old layout. You will also get more running track now you have the tracks running around the walls of the room. I also feel its going to give a much better overall appearance, with the old layout it just looked like the railway was only running around the village. With the new layout each side will seem like a different section of the railway. Its really going to feel like the train is going somewhere, much more so than the old Lakeside. And of course, access to all parts now is going to be so much easier. So a win win all round. Loved watching the high speed footage, made it look so easy. Keep up the good work!

      @GrahamFoulston  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      david beckett Nope, the track will just have to fit around the cross members, this is going to be a very simple layout so I’m not too bothered that point motors won’t fit to be honest. Cheers for now. ..........Graham

    You are at an exciting point Graham, building and planning a new layout, at this stage is, I think, better than the feeling of sadness at the end of your first layout. I see you go about building your modules in the same way you build your layout, very precise, a joy to watch.
    One question, are you going to build all the modules the same or are you going to arrange the support woodwork so as to avoid point motor positions and the turntable.
    Robin

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Milton Mo Junction Thank you very much Robin and greatly appreciated. I wanted this layout to be accurate as regards being flat and level - unlike the first one and so being precise is of importance to me - get this bit right and the rest should follow a lot easier. I will initially build all the modules the same so I will no doubt have to modify them accordingly as and when something gets in the way. I’m not planning the layout yet - I’m planning the space to put a layout in if that makes sense and will make it fit that space. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham

    Hey Graham, really like your progress so far. Just wondering if open gridwork would allow more scenery below track level in relation to flat board construction, thanks.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      david fleming Hi David, I shall carry on with the flat panels for now and complete a totally flat circuit, once I have that then I can adjust accordingly as I see fit. As these units are small modules, then all I need to do is just unbolt a particular module and then modify it. I learnt from my previous layout that cutting holes for lakes, canals etc too early on was a mistake, I need to take my time and just ponder on things first before I make any hasty decisions - it’s just my way of working these days. Thanks for the comment and idea though mate, it’s greatly appreciated. Cheers for now. ..........Graham

    Ahhh!! Graham - the best laid plans of mice and men!!!! When she who has to be obeyed states that you are going out - that's it! Good to see the start of Lakeside 2.0. To save on weight/timber have you considered using just two legs at one end of each module? If you put a ledge at the other end, you won’t need so many levellers and heavy legs. It will be just as strong. Just a thought. Enjoying your videos.

      It should also help with keeping the tracks aligned and level at the joints. I used this method for an exhibition layout and it was a breeze to erect and disassemble. Not that you require portability, but if it saves weight and timber, why not.

      Mark Mattocks Thank you very much Mark, I’m surprised that anything above 16 degrees is too warm in there to work but if you are just sitting there then it’s a perfect temperature. The shed sounds good even though you say it was expensive but you do get what you pay for these days, as long as you are comfortable in there (which I’m sure you are) then that’s the main thing. 😉. The shed is wavy edge cedar, built on stud frame, 100 mm insulation, walls, pitch roof, then 200 mm above ceiling, and 25mm in the floor. The door is also insulated at 50mm.I have an oil filled radiator, and that is set at just frost free setting, and that can be too warm, especially if it’s a fairly mild day, and a desiccant dehumidifier set on auto. The temperature seems to be fairly constant. I have ply base boards, and have also adjustable feet to all legs, but have never adjusted them. Watching with interest, great stuff, although I am still on first layout, so when do I do a rebuild to keep up with the Jones’s lol

      Model Railways Unlimited Yes I do wear a mask when cutting with a saw but just for the drilling of the holes then I don’t bother - I know I should but I don’t. Cheers for now. ...........Graham

    Superb! Sunday night and Lakeside is reborn! I hope this comment isn't too late and you've just emptied your wallet at B&Q. - but what about milling the larger stuff to the sizes you need with a circular saw or saw table?

      davie maclean Yep, just like the old times eh Davie, Sunday night and a Lakeside video! 😉. I hardly ever use any machine tools, I tend to cut and sand everything by hand if I can, I’m just old fashioned. I have a host of electrical tools in the garage but hardly ever use them, the nearest thing I get is using the electric drill !! Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham

      @@GrahamFoulston Might be worthwhile seeing if a local workshop or handyman would do it for you - depending on the price obviously. I used to have one near me but he had the temerity to retire! ;-)

      davie maclean Some people have no sense of obligation and just retire! Blooming cheek I say! 😂. Most of the material is the correct size when I bought it and apart from that I actually enjoy building it this way, I know it’s more work for me but in a bizarre way it’s very enjoyable.

      Chris Jubb Thank you Chris and glad you enjoy my videos and that this one made you smile. No, I haven’t packed up smoking yet although I did manage to cut down a lot which is better than what I was smoking at the time. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham

    You could ripe the big ones into half the size. Good you’re starting. Since your space is now climate controlled, there is even less chance of warping. Well worked out well. You’ve done it totally wrong you know 😉 wink wink

      Rob McCrain The problem with that Rob is that I have cut all the materials to size now. Hehe, yes I have no doubt that to some I would have done this totally wrong - not wrong though, just different to how they would have done it !! 😂😂. Cheers for now buddy. .............Graham
