Yes you can connect all the ground to one point as this is not galvanic isolated. And to more about this circuit you can watch kasyan tv channel who originally created this circuit and explained working of each part in it's video. Hope this help

The only criticism I have is the IC is a bit more expensive and not as popular as the 10 a penny 555 timerIC it's the same circuit basically, same components almost 🙂
NOT at all the 555 only generate pwm but the 3843 is a current mode control ic, it has an input for feedback to maintain the voltage at a desired value even when changing the load and also a current limitation feature which are not available in the 555 Timer
You cant control current with this circuit, only voltage sir. Maybe if you ask in comments he will build a CC voltage and amperage controller circuit for you.🤔

In the diagram, why did you even connect the 1k resistor inbetween the source and ground? Not even 1amp of current will flow through that resistor. Atleast try showing the circuit diagram properly.

Irfz44N is connected to GND via 1k resistor. Does it ever work like this?

it was obscured by braille (Tech Ideas) :))))
Even the ground should be directly connected to the source of the MOSFET.
Instead it was connected with a 1k resistor.

Yes, you are right, but the second one which you are assuming as MOSFET, is a Schottky diode
It's a diode array probably a pair of shotty diodes. 🤨

The inductor is taken from an old atx power supply. Outer diameter 23mm, inner diameter 13.5mm and width is 10mm. Wire diameter 0.7mm.
