8 actually did really well when considering the fact that the water actually stopped flowing for awhile after it collapsed, unlike some of the later ones who collapsed just as fast, if not faster(7), and the water kept pouring out at a much faster rate.

@@easiazyy A dam is meant to hold back water. As such, it needs to be as strong as possible. That means that it must be made solid regardless of the material it is made from. Thus, it needs to be sealed with mortar or made from a material like concrete or hardened mud.

How the first dam failed:
After the dam breached the pressure built up on the dam and it eventually exploded
Second dam:
The support ain’t squat, well anyways the support sticks gave in and the dam breached
Basically all these boiled down to foundation failure
Actually it was a structural failure caused by erosion of the foundation for the first one
Spent the whole time going "why no slipway?! Why are the emergency gates not opening up onto a hardened surface?! These are all avoidable collapses!" Lol great video, really shows how dams can (and do) fail

On a lot of dams with emergency flood gates, the ground beneath the gate is covered with concrete to reduce the erosion caused by the emergency discharge.

I think i have learned something from this video. Not only that you need a strong material for the building to be strong but also the foundation from the building, which is the sand from the video, needs to be strong material or else it will collaples easily.

Esentially, cause they are unreinforced and there is no wall under them, water can freely flow below them and just completely destroyed the bottom of the dam.

Sand is, while an incredibly entertaining and often adequate material, just seems to be far too affected by water to act as a suitable soil agent for these kinds of tests. I know you’re generally just doing it for the destructive nature, but would using actual dirt or another agent to test longevity be a possibility?
I absolutely agree with you, and next year I plan to build dams similar to the real ones.

all these dames failed for the same reason eroded foundations. the second place holder in theory had a better chance of surviving with that foundation thanks to the diving boards to help put the water a little further out before it hit the foundation but in that scenario troths would have been better.

the main cause of the collapses are due to either sand under it becoming soft, therefore making the entire structure weak, or the water just destroys part of it and the entire thing collapses due to that part creating a chain reaction
some of them are just due to not enough water discharged

The destructive capabilities of water are amazing but it’s less impressive at a smaller scare that you do it at, like seeing water destroy a fully concrete dam is a massive feat but seeing it just push away small toy bricks is less impressive but still a cool feat
