Why in the fuck do you have to sound so good?I can’t remember the last time I watched a master class of a pianist on TH-cam, actually knowing his theory, and being able to play and explain the way you do. Man you are blessed, holy smokes. Your timing, feel, teaching, and ear and theory knowledge are off the chart, way under rated.
Thank you so much! That’s really meaningful for me to hear. A lot of people like to troll these channels so getting a comment like that is really special.
Working on this now and was looking for ideas. Your video is super helpful. Because of the pandemic I’m looking for a quiet, ethereal sound, kind of calming and meditative. Hope you post more videos like this.
So glad it was helpful. Hah nice! If you have any questions or want to request that I make a similar video, email me at greg@weebid.app. There's a new app I'm trying out where you can ask me questions and I'll give video answers, so I'll be answering 100% of the questions posed to me this week...I'll give you access if you email.
Great stuff Greg. Aside from your beautiful melodic jazz style, I really appreciate and learn from your analyses of forms and structures. Thanks so much.
The Db in that song is a minor chord (everyone just assumes, without really listening, that it's another 9sus because all the others are.. - use your EARS guys!) - the clue is in the MELODY, which states the minor 3rd of Db right on the downbeat. first time 'round (in the head), it's Dbm9/13 (no 11th) and in the solos the soloists play Db dorian/(Gb bebop) while in Hubbard's solo (and his own), Herbie colours it mMaj7. Take the harmony from the guy who composed the song, not the (frequently wrong) 'real' book. (I have a theory that conceptually/compositionally it's functioning as a Gb9sus/Db - making that mini 'B' section a repeat of the 'A' - but up a semitone, - and putting the 5th of that chord in the bass is the 'touch of genius' that makes it voice lead back to the D9sus - but then again, that theory doesn't really stand up when it's played as a DbmMaj7 (though the voice leading still works)..) IDK? - the only thing I'm certain of is that it's NOT Db7sus as the 'real'book (and almost everyone else) has it.
at least someone who really listen at the source i love playin a trick in the higher voices Bm7 over first D chord Dm7 over F chord Cm7 over Eb chord Bmaj7 over Db chord and then wow Bm7 again over D chord!😊
you are right. last chord of the bridge is really Gb7 (sus) dominant over Db bass. I like moving that to Gb lydian dominant, which is Db melodic minor, or playing Dbm and Ab major triad on top of eachother. Additionally, a C augmented scale can create some serious haunted and spooky dissonance in that spot, that resolved wonderfully back to Dsus7 at the return of the A section. what is really my take away from this is that these tricks (changing the bassnote to the fifth, going lydian dominant, augmented and a bunch of other tricks) can be applied at will creatively on either of the 4 pedal points. let your Voyage begin !
Do you have any methods for exploring the triplet phrasing that they use in their solos on the recordings? I'm having a really hard time feeling the rhythms while trying to transcribe George Colemans solo
Hey Greg, that is absolutely great. Can you please more explain the g minor chord over the d minor, how you resolve it while playing with the band? Thanks.

So glad this video came up in my search. Love the colors you introduce and your presentation. 🎹❤

So beautiful! This is exactly what I was searching for. Thanks so much!
Excellent job
Really nice lesson, sounds tasty 😊
Really cool. Beautifully played. Clearly explained.
Fantastic...

What is the brand name and model of your piano , it sounds so good.

Beautiful! Thanks. I enjoyed this very much.
What keyboard is it??? Sounds very well.
These are great, thanks Greg. I hate to be a pest, but I have been hoping you might post the rest of your analysis of Herbie's solo on Actual Proof.
Ah shit good call I need to find the rest of those vids!!!

Great question - would you pitch it to me at Greg.weeBID.app?
Hello. Great tune for sure. Part B the Db7sus4 chord is usually changed to Dbm6/9 I'm told. Any input there?
Cheers from Whistler BC.
That's what I thought, seeing as there is an E natural in the melody during that chord.
Beatifull. Over the dsus my ears also take me to A DORIAN. In other videos they said you can use the g mayor. Really the notes are the same,
I struggle to make those bass pickups at the right time. Got to count.
it’s tricky, have to really work with this phrase too
👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Yessssssss!!!!!
just tell us the scales I don't have time
