At 65, my new rule is never to take a bike off road that weighs much more than me. So that maxes me out at a 250cc two or four-stroke. Big bikes are just not fun anymore - not that they ever really were. People rationalize taking a big bike off road, but to be honest, a 100+ hp bike off road has FAR more disadvantages than advantages, especially when riding alone.
That’s great if you can offroad in your back yard, where I’m from taking an 250cc bike on the big road is a death wish. But yes, light might be better.
My first bike was a “Honda Step-through” 55 years ago - I rode that little wonder all over the place and now at 72, after numerous road and off-road bikes, I have retired my latest Ducati and ride a Royal Enfield Himalayan. Cancer and Chemo have caused a 30% loss of weight (mostly muscle), so now when I drop the Himalayan (only occasionally) I absolutely need assistance to right it. So I am seriously looking at going back to the same bike that I started with, travelling on a rack on the back of the Jeep to the places I ride. As you get older, practicality and common sense mean more than an “ego trip” riding a huge bike you can no longer handle (or need).
@@heleti0000Glad to hear you're still riding @72. I currently have a Honda 400 TransAlp that weighs about as much as your Himalayan, as well as a Honda XR150. I accidentally put my 400 down while on trail ride last weekend and was most grateful that my younger friend helped me lift it. I was SO sorry I never used my li'll XR150. It can cruise at 55 mph all day and actually uses slightly less than half the fuel that my 400 uses. I think they were selling for $2971 in the US (exc dealer taxes) at one stage. Mine is a 2015 model (been available here in South Africa since then) and has not seen a dealer for maintenance etc, as yet.
One of the most important things watching any video on here, is feeling like your a part of what your watching. With a warm smile on your face...Thinking ? hell why don’t I go do that... Thanks for sharing the inspiration with each of your “Adventures”...👌🥃🏴
You are right about smaller motorcycles, Started out on a Honda CB100, now riding a BMW R1200 GS. Have really been thinking about getting a Honda CRF300 for riding around the back roads, here in Wyoming. At 71 a lighter bike would come in handy, just needs a lower seat height.
Riding a smaller bike is humbeling lets you know where you started from I always jump at borrowing a small bike and spending a day in the saddle Ride on !!!
I can relate. Your story reminds me of the bike I learned on, a 1965 Bridgestone 2 stroke parallel twin we bought at the local Montgomery Ward. Ah, the good ol day's. Peace
I started riding at 18 with a Honda CL90. My most recent bike was a BMW R1100r. You notice I didn’t say last bike because at 69 years old I have my eye on a new Honda XR150 to put on a carrier on my van when I go camping. Thanks for the inspiration.
Just my 2 cents ... The CT125 shines on nostalgia, low weight/seat-height, EFI & abs. The XR150 shines on low weight/seat height, longer suspension travel, better ground clearance, wheel size (19" up front) and thickness, more power, higher top speed and lower price! The latter has been available here in South Africa since 2015 (my model) Since retirement in 2020, it's been my everyday rider, Beginner instruction bike and closer to home Adventure bike. It's done about 15000 trouble-free miles and has not yet been to a dealership, thanks to easy DIY maintenance.
You might get this a lot but I appreciate you and your hard work on your channel. I’ve been watching your documentaries for a bit. I really want to thank you 🙏🏼 you’ve been an inspiration to me to get out on the bike and go. Love what you do and keep up the great work 😊 Daniel Farmer
At 52, this is my first bike. I’ve been riding it nearly a year. I’m not doing anything quite so grand as you, but I really like the bike so far. I very much appreciate your videos.
A couple years ago we were through Ajo on our way to Organ Pipe campground. Stopped at Olsens grocery store on the north end of town. BEST carne asada I've ever tasted! Love the new camping/small bike content. As we get older we find we have nothing to prove, put our ego aside and want to get back to just having fun. Big bikes definitely have their place but small bikes really allow you to stop and smell the roses 🌹. Made reservations at your hotel the first week in April. Looking forward to meeting you and Eva. 🤙🏻
Love your video's Sterling. Your videography is spot on. This coming from a guy who camps year round and motorcycling when I can (due to weather). This is my favorite channel. Keep up the great work.
I am so glad to hear you share the joys of a small bike. I have a BMW R1250RS for street and a KTM 390 Adventure. However, it is so fun to get on the 390 for street. Small, lighter, and so much less power, yet it's a complete joy to ride. Nothing wrong with small.
Eva always seems to put the best side out. Smiling and happy. Great videos as always. I'd love to see a little video about your motel. Following you a long time now and curious about it.
Thanks for the video. I was recently in the area on my trip west riding close to the Border. I road 86 to Why from Tucson. Then south on 85, the road you took to get tp the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, to Lukeville where I crossed into Mexico to continue my way west on MX-2. The scenery and solitude on the whole area is fantastic.
Enjoyed this video. Winced a little at your last one (wrist). Today 60 or so of us saw your Northern California BDR debut and we all liked that but could plainly see that BDR gullies and other things make it an adventure and not a sure bet for most of us. Great work on your part in all three. Thank you from new Phila PA..
The bigger more expensive motorcycles are amazing. The power, speed, and sophisticated traction control and braking, make for an incredibly capable machine. But, small motorcycles are more fun.
My R3TFC is the evolution of everything who ever needs. But… I really… I will never forget my first one Simson KR 50, ‘70. Yes we’re being poor, but happy… Buying a new GS13 I’m thinking seriously of an Scrambler400, but… how I’m telling this the “last generation”??
I've always ridden 250-350 cc dual sports but wanted something a bit more tame so for my 60th birthday I bought a G310GS and while not perfect, it's probably the best production bike for me because I take back road and mild off road adventures, but I can definitely see the attraction of the Trail 125. They're great little unpretentious go anywhere bikes, as long as you aren't in a hurry, which I'm not.
glad to see your getting well from your injury Sterling .i havent been able to ride since i went to Big Sur in early August. I had ACDF surgery then febuary was Rotator cuff surgery I have not been able to do what you are doing and i always enjoy your films
Good vid. Good words too. At 68 and about broken down from the mines, it feels good to ride anything and in particular no distance planned or locations to be at.
Analog bikes is the term I like to use. Dirt biking graduating to the latest/greatest-then jumping onto Honda XR75 pit bikes w/ your buddies for some real fun! Went to San Felipe, Baja there was a group of RVers that all had tricked out Trail 90's to Bar hop on. Anyone in California would love the Kennedy Meadows / Kernville area on trail bikes/dual sports. Great viddy, as always.
Great video Sterling. When it comes to enjoying and falling in love with the small bike…you’re preaching to the choir! I love my small bike, crf250l, and even tho tons of people tell me “you can’t do that, you can’t do this” “you’ll out grow it” I couldn’t be happier with it and do everything on it. From gnarly single track to full on multi day adventures. I wish the ct125 was available where I live. I’d enjoy having one in my stable for sure 👍🏻
Back to the roots. That little Honda makes you feel like 16 again. It's not about competition, who has the largest, most powerful, fastest bike, best equipment. I found the same feelings on my innocent Beta Alp 200. Cheers from Nürnberg, Günter
What an enjoyable video. You’re changing my mind about Arizona in winter. Really beautiful. You have a great setup with the van and bikes. And I love the Spanish guitar music.
My first motorcycle was a Honda trail 90 with leading link front fork suspension. This was in 1968 and I miss that bike after watching your episode. I’ve got a 1200 GS and 650 Dakar, both of which make me feel overbiked on many of my rides.
nice to enjoy life, thank you for the best video of the lovely desert .. I just love it with the riding of the little Honda..I understand the feeling my first motorcycle was a semi-road kawaski 100 in 1976 ( a long time ago).. Alain & Yellow my ryker
You've rediscovered small bike fun. I've got a little MZ TS150cc that is so much fun revving through the gears and trying to keep the speed up, often chose it instead if the Harley.
I totally got what you were saying about the rekindled joy of biking on a smaller bike, more in line with the first days of biking. I've been riding since I was 10 years old and bought a tiger XC800 three years ago (having spent the vast majority of my riding on larger street bikes, Goldwings, and Large baggers or cruisers. Now the XC 800 just makes me a kid again riding all those back trails, dirt roads, etc that I did as a teenager and I have a perpetual grin on my face while doing it. Its renewed a lost love of that riding that I first fell in love with. So yes, I get EXACTLY what you mean.
I have multiple motos… Someone asked me once “what moto is your favorite?” My response… “whatever one I’m currently riding!” Great channel and look forward to watching your stuff. Cheers.
People have often asked me at the past. What is your favorite country that you’ve traveled through and I always answered that question in a similar fashion.
I've "downsized" my motorcycle (#12) to a 411cc Himalayan and my wife as also bought an Himalayan. We now are going to trailer them with our modest motorhome to a basecamp and ride around from there. No highways , just secondary roads and trails to finally go where we always wanted to go anyway. More nature, more sites, more freedom, more relaxing, etc. Downsizing can in fact be more! And I love my little ct110cc Honda (1982)
Excellent video, as always, sir! Be CaReFuL at 3:37 ! 😂 I showed that chain lube hack in one of my early Super Cub videos (letting the engine spin the rear wheel slowly), and I took so much flack from the "safety experts" and keyboard warriors out there! "You're lucky you didn't lose your fingers...", "YoU sHoUld NeVeR dO tHaT!" blah, blah, blah. I was using an aerosol can with a straw on it... my fingers weren't even close! 😂👍 --QM
Excellent video. You two are very lucky. I have ridden motorcycles all my life. My father owns a GMC Savana 3/4 ton long. He converted it himself to a stealth camper when new. I have a trailer we tow at the back with my bike when we travel.! Best memories of my life. Keep up the good work. Hi to Eva. Wish we could make it to Arizona. Stay safe.
Awesome Video! 🙂👌 So good to see you riding arund on this little Honda! You get where you want to! Easy going! 🙂🤙 The more xou can enjoy anything else while riding! Landscape and stuff! Simply relaxing riding! Lucky you having a Vaentine loving to ride on nobby tires through dirt! 😍 Thanx for sharing! Ride safe Bro! 🍀🙏🍀 Carsten 🇩🇪
Hi Sterling, I really appreciate your videos for their content and especially their production quality. It’s great to have someone with your expertise catering to our community in such an enjoyable manner. Keep up the great work! Also hope you find the best solution to your hand injury, get well right and soon.
Your delight with the Trail 125 is infectious! Looking forward to your "tour" loaded with camping kit on the T125. There's no surprise that it handles the 4WD routes well. Your opinion of how it does with luggage and assorted highway routes may be a revelation. I'll stay tuned!
Hi Sterling, another great video! Love your travels and the wild outdoors you visit. Marvellous shots and filming. A great inspiration to go and do the same. Keep going my friend and take us along. Best regards Norman.
I always like your videos. This one especially. I’m 68 now and started my two wheel journey in 1972. Outside of Tucson on a Ducati 450 Desmo. I’ve been on almost every size, style and brand over the years. Living in the Appalachian foothills I’ve scaled down to a klr650 for backroads and dirt roads. I’m sure as the year roll on I’ll downsize more. Kind of back to my roots with simple singles. I hope to return to southern Arizona soon via two wheels and backroads.
Always glad to see a notification from your channel. Its usually so calm and laid back. love the 125. my little bike like that is the DR200. works about the same for me, but I'm much larger than you, so I "need" that extra power.
Thank you for sharing your trip and camping adventures with us. I was salivating when you made that skirt streak and sauteed onions. That little trail 125 is PERFECT for these camping jaunts away from your van! All the camera setups were greatly appreciated, I know what a chore that is, especially while you are in the middle of the moment, you have to setup your next shot...well done Sterling...and Hi Eva, loved seeing you in there with your new 690! Jealous.
Hey, thanks a lot! I really feel that this kind of writing is what the little bike was designed for… Just exploring. Setting up the camera shots is really enjoyable for me usually.
That Honda looks like the ideal off road bike for me ! I haven't had a bike a a daily driver for over 45 years. I bought a r1100rt and it's even better than my first bike way back in the dayt. It's 43 degrees and raining here in WA. Sure would be nice to feel 72. Cheers !!
I have an Africa Twin here at home in Canada, and a KLR in storage in the US that I fly down to and ride a couple weeks a year. When I’m on the KLR, I never feel like I’m missing my more tricked out, powerful gadget and tech laden ride at home. It’s just fun to ride and enjoy for what it is. I get what you’re saying, sometimes less is more. That being said, a 701 is in my future.
I have the same setup as you have I go up to the Sierra Nevada in California and pan for gold and metal detect for gold on my motorcycle your spot on the feelings about your van and your motorcycle doing these adventures
Great video, glad your hand is healing well Sterling! I need a little Honda CT to do just the kind of riding you described and in places where my Africa Twin is just too big, too heavy and even dangerous
Take that van your woman & some bikes to the AMA mid Ohio vintage days event this fall. The largest vintage motorcycle event in the USA. It is something that every motorcyclist must experience. Just bought two more new off road bikes just for it.
Sterling, as always, an outstanding video. Love the B roll and how you work it into the total story line. It makes me want to get a van with a trailer for my 1200 gsa.
I got an Indian Roadmaster and that thing has a kerb weight of over 400kg 😮. I am 60 and dropped it twice last year in my 7 years of ownership. I think the universe if trying to tell me something. Also last year I got a steal of a deal at an auction and ended up with a sub 200kg Honda CB500X. I am starting to realise that this small bike has a ton of advantages over my big bike. When I get off my Indian and jump on the Honda it feels like a bicycle, so light, I get 500Km out a tank, it uses 91 fuel (that's I believe 87US), insurance, rego, parts and maintenance are cheaper etc etc....and most importantly I can take this thing on unpaved roads and if I drop it I can lift it without breaking a sweat (probably as I have not dropped it yet) Appreciate the extra effort of those drive by shots in your vids, nice job and beautiful place to chill for the night. rsm8
What a great video encompassing all of the things I too love to do. I really feel connected to the experience itself when I watch your videos, great work. I love to see that your lady friend seems to enjoy the same activities as yourself, that's rare, so enjoy it thoroughly for the rest of us haha. I am still trying my damnedest to fall in love with my CT 125 but after a year and a half it just hasn't happened yet. I am currently planning a two day mini-moto ADV trip on which I plan to ride the Trail and camp off of it. Hopefully after that trip it'll make more sense as to why it belongs in my stable long term.
I find that the CT125 works best for rides that you can do directly from your house into the trails (if you live in a place like that) or like I do - transport it in my other vehicle. In any case, I don't think it would do as well if I had to ride it long distance to get to the fun stuff. We'll see, I haven't tried that yet :-) But I really do love it on the smaller, tighter trails.
@@SterlingNoren Yea where I live the ride to the trails thing isn't an option haha. I have been tooting around town with it which is fun and I've had it to a few scooter rally rides as well but I have yet to run any real long distance or over night on it. I haven't given up on the CT just yet, I am still trying to let it show me its place before I abandon it haha.
It’s nothing special, really… It’s just an old camcorder camera bag that I had laying around and it seemed to fit pretty well. It’s made by a tripod company called Manfrotto.
You seem to be reading my mind lately, Sterling! My hips are not what they used to be, and though I sometimes regret selling the GSPD, I look forward to shorter, lighter bikes… or maybe a third wheel??
We all grow older, get injured, or simply just want to mix things up a bit. Nothing wrong with trying out different bikes or different styles of riding.
Love the video and the bikes. My wife and I have a pair of Honda Monkeys. I was wondering what mounting bracket you used to mount your gps to your 125? Would like to do something similar with our Monkeys.
Another nice video, totally jealous. can’t wait till spring. Question, actually how often do you use the 4x4 on your adventures, Would a 2x4 lifted van work well in the desert? Your thoughts Thx Tony
"....Perfect time of year.....72 F degrees...just about perfect..." Sounds like a PERFECT time & place for a motorcycle rally. Oh, look. There's one such rally right here: th-cam.com/video/fPgT1LUKx8M/w-d-xo.html

😂👍 --QM
I converted A Husqvarna 450 Supermoto for light trails to throw in sprinter van when not on my big adventure bike V4S
Ahhhhhh.....Sterling your making us Canadians jealous!!! All the best...
Stay safe.
Thanks very much!
I have an R1 n a 1190 Adventure. I can relate to jumping on a smaller bike. Brings back an earlier feeling of riding. No pressure
Stirling
Like I mentioned at the rally last April, I LOVE the van camping videos! Looked like a fantastic Valentines Day!
Ride SAFE and BE safe. 👍👍
Awesome Video! 🙂👌
So good to see you riding arund on this little Honda! You get where you want to! Easy going! 🙂🤙
The more xou can enjoy anything else while riding! Landscape and stuff! Simply relaxing riding!
Lucky you having a Vaentine loving to ride on nobby tires through dirt! 😍
Thanx for sharing! Ride safe Bro! 🍀🙏🍀
Carsten 🇩🇪
Thanks! 👍
Y’all are awesome!
Hi Sterling, I really appreciate your videos for their content and especially their production quality. It’s great to have someone with your expertise catering to our community in such an enjoyable manner. Keep up the great work! Also hope you find the best solution to your hand injury, get well right and soon.
Much appreciated!
Your delight with the Trail 125 is infectious! Looking forward to your "tour" loaded with camping kit on the T125. There's no surprise that it handles the 4WD routes well. Your opinion of how it does with luggage and assorted highway routes may be a revelation. I'll stay tuned!
im using my campervan / ktm 500 combo more than my GS. Fun lightweight riding and a good bed every night.
Great Movie
Great Cycling an show. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Hi Sterling, another great video! Love your travels and the wild outdoors you visit. Marvellous shots and filming. A great inspiration to go and do the same. Keep going my friend and take us along. Best regards Norman.
Thank you so much Norman, all the best!
Great video guys. Sterling it doesn't matter what size the bike is, it's got two wheels ...... say no more.
Love all of this!
Just stunning!
Big power does not necessarily equate to big fun!
I have a 1200, 701 and a little 125. It’s a pretty good mix.
@@SterlingNoren great mix!
Hope the hand is healing well.
13:00 - Adventure Croks. 🙂
Great relaxing video. How about a short video on the accessories for your Honda Trail 125cc ? Likes & dislikes ?
Thanks
I have the same setup as you have I go up to the Sierra Nevada in California and pan for gold and metal detect for gold on my motorcycle your spot on the feelings about your van and your motorcycle doing these adventures
Cool, that sounds fun!
Great video, glad your hand is healing well Sterling! I need a little Honda CT to do just the kind of riding you described and in places where my Africa Twin is just too big, too heavy and even dangerous
Another great video!
Always so good.
Take that van your woman & some bikes to the AMA mid Ohio vintage days event this fall. The largest vintage motorcycle event in the USA. It is something that every motorcyclist must experience. Just bought two more new off road bikes just for it.
Great stuff, Your a lucky man.
Very relaxing Sterling....fantastic camera work as usual. Looking forward to possibly seeing you camping with the Honda 🤔
When I get off my Indian and jump on the Honda it feels like a bicycle, so light, I get 500Km out a tank, it uses 91 fuel (that's I believe 87US), insurance, rego, parts and maintenance are cheaper etc etc....and most importantly I can take this thing on unpaved roads and if I drop it I can lift it without breaking a sweat (probably as I have not dropped it yet)
Appreciate the extra effort of those drive by shots in your vids, nice job and beautiful place to chill for the night.
rsm8
Its all perspective. 3.45 hours from Bisbee to Ajo. Do you like driving cars, I dont. Interstate friendly offroaders, to me, are the end goal.
Nice video. Headed out to see the N Cal BDR film this afternoon at SSBMW.
Good stuff
❤
Cool....set up a great campsite with a dirt bike and hot chicks start rolling in! Noted! Great vid!
I didn't peg you for a burner. Nice VP collection. My windshields don't last that long.
I was hoping, hoping somebody would catch that!
👍
Great video! I love cacti. 🌵 you are living the dream. What is the soft bag you use on the rear rack of your ct125?
I use the Garmin Zumo mount that attaches to the handlebar. It is similar to a RAM mount system.
@@SterlingNoren can that mount be used with a BMW Navigator VI? I have a K1600GT with that GPS that I want to use on the Monkey.
You inspired me to get a trail125. What is your setup to have it in the back of the van? TIA
Another nice video, totally jealous. can’t wait till spring.
Question, actually how often do you use the 4x4 on your adventures, Would a 2x4 lifted van work well in the desert?
Your thoughts
Thx Tony
Not too often but often enough that I like having it. I think that the higher clearance is what is most important.
Sterling, thank you, looking forward to more incredible videos.
"....Perfect time of year.....72 F degrees...just about perfect..."
Sounds like a PERFECT time & place for a motorcycle rally.
Oh, look. There's one such rally right here:

Heck ya!
