THIS IS A REUPLOAD. My first one got blocked after a week of being on my page. When I first uploaded it, I initially disputed it because it was immediately demonetized, but the video wasn't blocked. They decided to reject my dispute AND PROCEED TO BLOCK MY VIDEO :) :) :) So, now we're here. Thank you for being here if you already watched it previously.
One of the best musicals ever made! Nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Director Best Cinematography Best Actress Best Supporting Actor Best Production Design Best Film Editing Best Sound Mixing Best Original Score
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."George Santayana It's good that this musical has resurfaced lately, unfortunately it's much needed still.
This was such a classic! I was 8 when this came out. Never forgot it. Spent most of my life working in the entertainment industry. Now, at 60, my back is shot, but hey - just because I can't do lighting and video anymore, I can still love musicals! Oh and just in case you didn't know, "Sally" (Liza Minelli) is Judy Garland's daughter. And you know who Judy Garland is. :)
Crazy thing I learned is director Bob Fosse didn't want Joel Gray to reprise his role of the Emcee from Broadway and when he did end up in the role Bob was going to cut all of his scenes, but a lot of studio people weren't going to let him and Joel won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. While Liza Minnelli (Judy Garland's daughter) won for Best Actress and the film also won for Best Director and a bunch of others.
This film set, and still holds to this day, the Academy Awards record for most Oscars won, without also winning Best Picture. Given the way the Academy tends to either divvy up Oscars among a lot of films, or have a consensus Best Picture that wins another seven or more, it's a record that may be unbreakable.
Joel Gray, the emcee, is the real-life father of Jennifer Gray. Jennifer starred as 'Baby' ("No one puts 'Baby' in the corner!") in "Dirty Dancing" with Patrick Swayze; she also played sister Jeanie Bueller in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". Michael York was everything American women loved in the 1960s & 1970s: young, handsome, sexy, British... He starred in "Logan's Run", "Lost Horizon", "The Island of Dr Moreau", and both Musketeer movies, among many others. Most people born in the 1980s and after only know him as Basil Exposition, from the Austin Powers franchise.
@@paulhammond6978 I recall seeing that episode when it was first broadcast; great acting. I always thought Jennifer had a unique beauty, much like Barbra Streisand. A shame that Jennifer got her nose 'fixed'; it was a perfection that made her look quite ordinary. She was still beautiful, but she lost a certain distinctiveness, and it impacted her ability to land acting jobs.
"Plenty o' Nuttin'" is an anachronism: we're in 1931, and the phrase comes from George Gershwin's *Porgy and Bess,* which didn't appear until 1935. Call out the Dresden Northwest Mounted from 1933's *Pardon My English* (which opened in January, the same month Hitler was appointed Chancellor). They always get their man!
31:03 Its interesting that there was for a short period during the nazi era there was still a pretty gay scene in Berlin among the burlesque theater. The majority of the nazis shown in this film where also part of the Brownshirts who where more the working class socialist section of the nazis compared to the upper class elites in the SS, in fact there where several homosexuals in the Brownshirts most notably Ernst Rhom, they where only tolerated for a short period until Hitler had the brownshirts purged because of the gay and communist elements among them, weirdly enough Rhom and Hitler where best friends until he had him murdered.
An incredibly poignant and incredibly relevant film. The rise of fascism is a terrifying reality to watch repeat, and I hope somehow it can be stomped out this time.
I haven’t seen the movie, I definitely need to because I love musicals and I know it’s iconic. But anyway, I just want to leave a comment! Let me know if it’s a must see!
Because of the Jews in the Nazi era... There were about 500,000 Jews living in Germany when the Nazis came to power. Before the Nazis began to persecute the Jews aggressively at the end of 1938 (they had also oppressed the Jews heavily in the first five years, but were still very busy preparing for their war and securing their power at home), many had already fled. If you were wealthy, it was generally not a problem for Jews to leave the country. The problem was more finding acceptance abroad. The western democracies did not particularly excel in this regard. The Americans in particular did not cover themselves in glory in this regard! But it must be said that of the 500,000 German Jews, 360,000 managed to get to safety. It was only when the war started that the Nazis began to deliberately murder Jews and other so-called "enemies of the Reich". And on a mass scale! The Jews in Eastern Europe were even worse off than German Jews. They had hardly any opportunities to escape the Nazi terror. In Germany itself, thousands of Jews survived, not least thanks to the support of Germans who had not lost their minds in the underground, until the Nazi nightmare was over...

It did NOT win Best Picture. The Godfather did that year, but Cabaret did win 8 Oscars that year...
@@kazzymoviefan Thanks for the clarification.
its so crazy that miss bob wanted to get fierce when the studio DIDNT EVEN WANT HIM TO DIRECT THE FILM😭😭

Didn't know that about Jennifer Gray - but do remember Joel guest starring in a good episode of Star Trek: Voyager.

This is Liza's best film. You should watch her mother's best movie, 1954 A Star Is Born. It was, i believe, the first major restoration.

One of the grittiest musicals I've seen, I love it!
Sorry youtube banned your first video :/
VERY gritty and it always burned me they cut one of the central plot lines from the stage version in the film adaptation

This is a must see musical.
Joel Gray is the Host and his daughter Jennifer is in Dirty Dancing.
I've never heard of this movie before. I was surprised to see the guy from Austin Powers.
That's RIGHT! I forgot Michael York was in this
Fingers crossed this time. 🤞 I'll come back to watch it after I've seen Cabaret.

This movie is terrifying! Especially the mc character is pure nigjtmare fuel lmao
