  • In part two, outspoken bookmaker Barry Dennis talks about his work with Channel 4 Racing, 'Barry's Bismarck' not allowing women to bet with him at Royal Ascot and Frankie's Magnificent Seven. He also talks the day he copped a cheque for £100k from one punter's one day business.

I've been following horses for 35 years and only until a year and a half ago I stopped studying form and my betting wins hasn't worsened, infact has slightly improved for not sitting on the fence

My best recollection of Barry Dennis, was at Windsor at an evening meeting, A horse was pulling for it's head on the way to the start( I fancied this horse) He was 7/2 like all the rest of the track bookies, I remember distinctly he looked at a his son and the I think his wife, with a knowing eye. He wiped the chalked odds of 7/2 and offered 4/1/ 9/2. A queue built up, pushing and shoving ensude. He shouted " dont worry you will all get on" There was handfulls of cash getting on, remember the thought WOW if this horse wins he is gonna get wiped Amazing memories, Of course the horse lost. I avoided the bet and learnt a million things that day.

He was a Million percent correct about 95% of Female punters, usually,on a day out/ I , once, lost a £300 losing bet when they crowded around my joint, and the Punter, who I did not know, lost patience, and walked around my pitch(I was on the end) to get on with the Guy next door. I had no idea that was the size of his bet.
In fact on a few occasions, I arranged ffor some students to gather around other pitches so that the real Punters joined my regulars in coming to me.....until they, quickly, latched on..and I dare say,reciprocated..lol.

I don't get the bit about him losing 27k on Dettoris 7. He was a big bookmaker and people like Wiltshire lost million+ on that day. His turnover was like 40-50k per day then.

It must have been Iris's Gift who beat Barracuda that day in the 2004 stayers hurdle at Cheltenham that Barry was on about..

Dennis was the rudest bookmaker i ever had the pleasure to take money off of at Windsor on a Mon eve, if you won in a tight finish or photo he would call you a jammy git, if your horse won well he would say similar to, 'you done well to know about that you ####... never once do i recall Barry paying me and saying well done or anything resembling a compliment.... if he had to pay a good lump the best you would get was the silent treatment and the money all but thrown in your hand....
Basically he was a pig of a man and nothing like the majority of politeness shown by the bulk of bookmakers oncourse.
The ring is a much better place without him.

I am sure you are right and I do not condone it but you do know that was to get repeat Business from Punters who loved to take money from him. His belief was that, eventually, it's a numbers game and the odds would be in his favour. When I started on-course,I had the opposite experience having been "one of the lads" and gone from "Poacher To Gamekeeper". I had considerable expenses and because I was liked, then many did not want to take my money until I had to tell them, in a friendly way, that I wanted to take their money and from then it was game on.
