We have muntjac and kites flying about and owls in the scruffy patches of shrubs that people are always complaining about but o love to see all the busy wildlife
Bravo keep up the good work, you are teaching us too, not just the council. I liked the signs you made. Our green belt land around the village is being developed at a alarming rate. The houses are going up over night at the expense of our flora and fauna, my friend has had to rescue 3 hedgehogs that have lost homes. it is crazy it is happening all over the country. It breaks my heart Isabel, the council sold the land. Any way Thank you for sharing🐞🌻🌱
Thank you. This was a very small triumph for nature when set against all the destruction that is happening. It is so awful and difficult to stay positive. But don`t give up and thanks for watching.
Well done and thank you for sharing. The plant is a mullein and is a haven for wild life. The flower stalks are strong and tall and won't flip over ☺ keep inspiring us all x
You are really brave and the result proves you right. Talking to people in a friendly way and explaining the background is really important and can make a lot of people think. Older people in particular are so often stuck in their inherited patterns and can't see beyond them. You really need a lot of patience. But then suddenly a neighbor joins in...or two, three. Just keep at it! It's great how quickly your channel is gaining members. Your friendly, personable but hands-on approach goes down well with people. Congratulations! You are a role model. Good luck and best wishes from the equally rainy Bavarian Forest in southern Germany.🌈
Thank you Gabi, for your kind words. You give me a lot of encouragement. It is about changing hearts and minds and helping people to see things differently, which is not easy for most people. Things are changing but I just worry it is not fast enough. Thanks for all your support.
Well done with the „no weed killer“!! I believe that a lot of people these days are very removed from nature. It is so sad that they are almost blind to it! And nettles are such a powerful plant also for us humans. It’s has more iron in it than lots of the usual vegetables and you can use it like spinach! Just might not be so easy to harvest 😅 We built a 15 meter long dead wood hedge and we were sure when we built it, that there would be an uproar from the neighbors for the messy look but the opposite was the case. Even someone came to us and asked us for advice as they wanted to copy the idea! So we are very proud of our so very lively dead hedge! Happy gardening (without weed killer) from Switzerland 🇨🇭🐝🌸😊
Yes it`s interesting that the man from the council thought people would complain about their children being scratched by a thistle but not about being poisoned by weedkiller. I like the sound of your dead hedge and that your neighbours like it too. Very encouraging. Thanks for watching.
I live out in the country - farms. Talking to my neighbor I was surprised to hear they let the giant factory farm up the road use their fields. I politely informed her that while she is at work they spray manure from the factory cows and that those cows are treated with anibiotics and other medicines so they can digest the GMO corn grown with Round-Up. I explained that the run off was going into her pond and mine. She had no idea. She had never thought about it. Her home is surrounded by large fields that her children play in and they swim in the pond. Next field over is GMO corn which they spray the field with weedkiller before planting. (some weeds have become resistent). Most people are totally uninformed about what is in weedkillers. We have high rates of cancer in the area ( maybe a coincidence?) So sad what we are doing to our world.
Oh Wow! That sounds awful!! Interesting that the man from the council thought people would complain about their kids getting scratched by a thistle but not being poisoned by weedkiller. I am surrounded by sheep farms so I don`t think we are poisoned so much. The sheep eat everything and so decimate the wildlife. But people here are just as uninformed about that and think barren empty fells are normal.
You made me laugh about teaching the complainers to walk on the other side of the pavement !😅 love the unmown verge. I have the same problem here with seeing things in nature differently than my neighbors...as long as we can do some of what we want it's beneficial 😊
I find if I dead head the welsh poppies early in the season I can prolong their flowering. It gets to a stage where the plants get tatty so I let them seed before cutting them back. We don’t seem to have a weed killer policy here, thank goodness, but they do cut roadside verges before the flowers have a chance to seed, especially orchids, so annoying. I wonder if a lot of people who work for the councils have little or no understanding the way nature works and just work according to the worksheet!!
You`re lucky your council doesn`t use weedkiller. It is heartbreaking the amount of damage one man with a mower or a strimmer can do. I think the council workers just do as they are told. I think I need to find out who makes the decisions and start to pester them. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for what you do regarding asking them to stop using poisons and allowing wild flower areas for nature to thrive - I am completely on the same page as you and support what you do.
I live ( since 2017 ) in a little town called Mount Shasta City, California, USA. I love the natural wild grasses and flowering "weeds". But very few people here are like myself. I'm in my 70's and have been visiting here from San Francisco since the late 60's. Thank you for your presentation.
I had to look up Mount Shasta City. It looks amazing!! People here do not like weeds either so I think we have to do what we can to help people change their perspective and see wild and untidy as a good thing. It is not easy! Thanks for watching.
Thanks so much. This was a while ago so the thistle came to the end of its life and has gone now I`m afraid. So I think it must have been a biennial. I`m waiting to see what grows in its place. Thanks for watching.
Yes they do, if conditions are right, but they can be a bit picky. Welsh Poppies, of course, but verbascum not so much. The plants that appeared along my front wall have been broken off, so won`t produce any seed.
Well done getting onto the council. A corner in our village has been taken over by a lady who happens to be a councillor. I do wonder if anyone else would have success. It's sad that complaints happen still. Well done and a nice rainy sequence. I have a self seeded thistle. I'll keep it. 😊
It sounds like you have someone sympathetic on your council. I`m going to let my thistles flower, but I`m not sure I will let them seed. I might have rather too many thistles next year!!
Perhaps rather than the council receiving complaints about verges looking “messy” and then cutting them to please those people, we should all congratulate them on the areas they don’t cut and say how lovely it is to see them left wild … then they may realise that so many people do prefer to see them left longer. Love your videos.
I love the thistle! All your weeds look perfectly at home and not invasive at all. I have a thistle in my cottage garden. Its not like yours but tall, straight and pale, and about three foot high. I can't wait for it to flower. Happy gardening!😊
Hello Isabel, it is good news reference the council and spraying i was hoping that would be the outcome. I think we are getting a little decadent, what next wine drinking in the garden!!. What you have done with your garden you deserve it. With the attitude of the woman about the long grass it shows what you and like minded people are doing is needed even more. It is great to see how your over the road area is thriving, look forward to the next video. Take care and stay safe. Bryan fae Orkney.
Thanks so much Bryan. I can drink wine anywhere!! I glad you are enjoying the videos and I hope you are well and the weather is improving where you are.
Not a mess!! The gray green plant looks like mullein. It's one of my favourites. I seeded some into my field and they grew to 6 ft. They had presence. I thought they were just fabulous and people asked what they were. Some herbalists use a tea made from the leaves for coughs.
Thanks. I`m hoping it`s mullein. I`ll find out soon. We had one years ago seed itself in our garden in Wigan. You`re right - it certainly had presence.
Oh your weather is like ours this week Isabel and first week of June night temps are forecast to be 4c 😱😱. 6:58 they look very much like lambs ears if the flowers are pink. Have a marvellous week, stay dry, Ali 🌧️🇨🇦
Our nights are cold at the moment but not as cold as yours. I`m still keeping my tender plants in the greenhouse at night. I was wondering about lambs ears. The mystery will be solved soon when they flower. Take care, Ali.
So lovely to see your giant thistle, erigerons and poppies left to grow. There are areas in my village where the parish council only mow the edges and leave areas to grow wild. You have have certainly 'opened my eyes' to look and fully appreciate wildlife. Thank you Isabel!
Rain is the one thing there is plenty of in Wales. Having said that we are going through a dry spell at the moment. The river is very low. The water butts aren`t empty though.
Good for you! Your front is lovely. Love the 'no weed killer' signs. Re mystery self-seeder, could it be Rose Campion? 'Over the Road' is coming on like a treat. People can be so depressing 😿
No wonder! People always complain when areas are left uncut and yet they want to see birds and butterflies. They just don`t get the connection. Thanks for watching.
Nobody should be proud to have 'a nettle patch;. The stinging nettle is a voracious weed: its roots or rhizomes, grow deep and spread. Yesterday I removed several shoulder high from a tall box hedge where birds nest. The term 'garden' has become confused with 'wild', and your many wild weeds will eventually spread around other high maintenance gardens.
Thank you for expressing an alternative viewpoint but I will continue to be proud of my nettle patch and all the wildlife it is supporting. Perhaps the birds chose to nest in your hedge because of the protection provided by the nettles.
We have muntjac and kites flying about and owls in the scruffy patches of shrubs that people are always complaining about but o love to see all the busy wildlife
I like the sound of your scruffy patches and I`m sorry people complain about them. Thanks for watching.
You have a beautiful natural looking garden, Its the bees knees. We have four brook thistles in the front garden and the pollinators love them.
Thank you. I`m looking forward to my thistle flowering and seeing who visits then.

Thats great news. Well done you and the council for not ignoring your request. You're the Wild Welsh Warrior now. 😊 👏 👏
Ah, thanks Tracy!
Well done and thank you for sharing. The plant is a mullein and is a haven for wild life. The flower stalks are strong and tall and won't flip over ☺ keep inspiring us all x
Thanks so much. I`ll try!! (I hoped it was a mullein. The problem is people might pull it over as they walk passed) Thanks for watching.

I had welsh poppies in the garden of the first house we had just after we married. So simple but so lovely.
They are lovely! Thanks for watching.
Well done! Huge thumbs up 👍
Thank you

I love erigeron karvinskianus. ❤ They just seed themselves everywhere. Same with the Welsh poppies and Verbascum.

@mywildwelshgarden-es3fr may be nice to grow and gorilla plant some thistles. 😀 mine is in with my roses so not ideal but it's 3+ foot high now.
👍 well done I did the same in my village. It looks wonderful ❤
That's great to hear! Keep going! Greetings from Northern CA, USA.
Great to hear you are doing the same. Thanks for letting me know. And thanks for watching.
