What a beauty! I have driven on this route, but the opposite direction - from Riva to Limone, it's a pleasure not only to explore the towns, but also to drive on this roads. Northern Italy and especially the areas around two big lakes - Garda and Como, are so picturesque, I just love that area!
We spent 3 days in limone, it was magical. Went out to the pool at 2am and listened to the thunder coming from the mountains. Seriously magical place. But you need to have a car to explore the whole lake really. Boat trip to sirmoine was really cool
To really enjoy driving down the Gardesana Occidentale between Limone and Riva, you need an Italian bella machina, not a screaming Ferrari, an Alfa Romeo with that gorgeous double camshaft engine will do best. And then, cruising down the curvy road - all windows opened, feeling the warm wind from the lake and listening ecstatically to the trumpet concert of the Alfa engine reflected by the tunnel walls. That is real quality of life, or how the Italians say _dolce vita_ ...
