    Hot start issues on my own Mk2 turned out to be the Mercedes-Benz brass fuel injectors!!
    Why?.....basically they have a higher opening pressure vs stock vw/audi injectors and how the K-jetronic unit functions is different to how the KE-jet units work and Mercedes use KE-jetronic units
    Part numbers:
    Mercedes-Benz Injectors - 0 437 502 047
    VW / Audi all K-jetronic models - 0 437 502 023
    Lots of investigations, research and testing confirms this, bit annoying but we live and learn

      This problem appears to affect any cast iron kjet unit

    Great video .
    Have a hot start issue on my 9a corrado . Parked it up on the head of it . New fuel pumps , new injectors , new check valve , new accumulator . Wrecks my head

    Thanks and always appreciate the vids. I'm running 9A on 16V rocco fuel system in my 83 Jetta. It is USA spec parts and been running the 190E Merc injectors for Almost 20yrs. Never a hot start issue. But this will give me a heads up if the issue does arise.

    Well done on finding the issue. Warm starts are the absolute worst - prevents from really using it as a weekend toy.. get fuel, can't restart, go to the shop can't restart. I had the same issue but not as bad to restart on the VR6 engine in the Corrado. I did similar works, changed all components in the fuel system, had the injectors refurbed but it turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator letting fuel return back to the tank.
    I have some Bosch mk2 16v (new boxed with plastic caps) i'm looking to sell if you need any as no longer have a mk2. Was going to put them on ebay.

    Really interesting. I have the Merc injectors in my standard KR and have been fortunate enough not have had this yet

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting 🤔 I think it depends on what pressure the metering head is at, the lower the pressure the less the issue potentially

      @@GreyGooseRestorations I haven’t adjusted the WUR as the car otherwise runs very well so assume given it’s age (unless someone has been in there before) it probably is lower in all likelihood. I guess I should measure it but not sure I want to tamper with it since it’s running well… the only issue I have is if the car is left standing for a long time (week or more) it starts on the button (with the fifth injector) but either immediately stall or if i prime it on ignition a few times runs like a haunted shithouse for a while until the idle smooths out almost exactly as your described for the hot start. Like fuel is only making it out sporadically out of the injectors. Once it’s started once it’s no problem again unless I leave it parked up for ages again…. Like the toy it is this and given the unreliability of our weather this happens too regularly 😅

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @wsmallridge it may just be isolated to the main system pressure potentially but like said I'm still investigating

    Hello there! I have the same problem with my Jetta GTX 16V K-Jet with the original Bosch injectors. Engine is tweaked to about 175 bhp but had the same problem with the engine completly stock.
    Also got the same problem from time to time on my Audi 80 16V KE-jet...

      It's a pain of a issue, not many things can cause it but again it's a nause to fix

    Great video. Thank you. Question.. Why not change the fuelpressure to match the higher opening of the merc injectors? On the WUR unit. I have the merc ones on my Scirocco but i dont have exactly these symptoms as you have. Mine does not always fire up on all 4. Like 10% of the times. Do you want to share the list with the differnt injectors? Might search for the lower pressure ones just to see what happens..

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'll add the two part numbers used into the description as it'll take some time to translate the list into English. You could raise the system pressure by .5 bar but that would then provide more fuel and the distributor would need checking for balance.

  • @mcfly6667
    @mcfly6667 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I was leaning to the Merc injectors. This additional info will make me want to stick with the original steel ones that came with the K-E unit. But the external FPR should help mitigate hot-start any way. Also you didnt use this term but "vapor-lock" I think means the same condition you are talking about.

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree with that, vapour lock, that's the one, spent ages thinking of a better way to describe it haha

    Many thanks, great video again. I have hot start problems on my 1983 1.8 MK1 Golf & have discovered that the accumilator was deleted during a recent restoration!! A new accumilator is being fitted this week and I was thinking about a new set of injectors - possibly Merc... think I might go for the steel ones now!! Do you know if all DX engines use the same injector and if you get a moment coulkd you give me the Bosch Part No. Thanks again.

    Hi there. Great video. Thanks for the advise. I recently got a 16v that’s having some issues. Battles to start. Runs rough. Sounds and feels like running on 3 cylinders. After watching your other videos and a bunch of research ruled out spark as a problem and am now at the injectors being the issue. Question where are you finding the right part injectors? 0437502. Battling to find them in SA. I’m in London in a few weeks and thought I would get them while I’m there. Any pointer where to find them and indicative pricing would be appreciated. 🙏🏽

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      0 437 502 023 are the ones to go for, id check stock near where your visiting for example euro car parts or a TPS (trade parts specialist) and potentially order ahead of time then swing in and collect, cost wise around 30-40 per injector

      @@GreyGooseRestorations And those are fine for 8V? I have a 2.0L ABA block and JH 8V head, ported, with a mild cam and dual exhaust and 2" tubing. Just trying to get the best possible injectors. And...I do have a hot start problem, especially after the hot engine sits for about an hour in the sun. Cold starts are no problem at all.

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @seanporter6795 personally I can't confirm for the 8V but I'm going to advise not to use the brass merc injectors for any cast iron metering head so it stick with the steel ones

      I just tested the Mercedes 047 injectors and the OEM VW ones, as well as the shorter steel BMW injectors. The Mercedes ones crack about 2psi higher than the other two. Not much difference.

    "You can hear the spring doing its job" (accumulator)
    Is this a quite loud "ping" noise that almost sounds like heat expansion sound of the exhaust manifold??
    And I also have other info regarding this, I have the steel injector (I guess its 100% Bosch), and I have EXACTLY this issue anyway. Does this mean I have any of the other issues you are mentioning? Accumulator failing, seal in metering head or fuel check valve?
    Its funny because I also have the squeaky belt EXACTLY like you... I havent gotten around to fix it, is it just to replace it with a new one?

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My noise was the PS belt and just needed adjusting.
      The Accumulator noise can be very similar to the ticking of an engine as it cools
      It's hard to say for certain, best way is with pressure guages as you can see as soon as you turn the engine off where the issue would be, as in if the pressure drops to 0 quickly then there is an issue at the fuel distributor / or leading backwards to tank on the fuel feed side

    Hello mate, love your videos and would really appreciate a bit of advice when you’ve got a sec, I have a mk2 scirocco gti dx. Bought but never ran it, was driven onto a trailer. Car starts well on key but within 10 seconds or less will run up and die every time. Cold start plugged in /unplugged. Relay bridged/not bridged.. only actual issue I can visually see is a leak from the sensor on the right side of the head.. just wanted to see if it was a simple obvious fix or more scratchy head days.😂 th-cam.com/users/shorts7RuqO0N7xT8?feature=shared

    Okay hear me out. That FIRST crank you show did not crank fast enough. not even close. Slow crank. Even the second one where it starts it's not cranking fast enough. Engine did start the second go with only a few cranks, but I'm hear to say you need to look at the starter circuit.

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nothing wrong with the starter system, it spins over that speed and fires up within 2-3 engine rotations and always has done.
