    In 1976 I was taking my dog for a walk and a neighbour was out on the local common ground observing Saturn with it's rings. That was a long dog walk and my Dad gave me a telling off for being out too late. But I was hooked on Astronomy ever since. Great video btw and love the relaxed music too.

    I'm flushed with inspiration. This was an excellent demonstration as to just how far one can take their hobby to a serious level. I've just started out with an 80mm refractor with all the accessories to bring it to its full viewing capacity. Astrophotography is my main goal, and the moon & sun are my prime targets...Yes, I purchased a quality solar filter. :) Thank you for this wonderful, and detailed video. This is why I appreciate TH-cam and people like yourself who provide a wealth of knowledge for those of us in our early stages of the beauty of star gazing. Cheers !

    • @DarkCentre
      @DarkCentre  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! This comment makes all the world of difference when moral is low, as I often say to my precious lady (to whom we all owe our thanks for these videos, inadvertently) if it gets one more person outside and looking up its all worth it...
      There are many more videos to come, but their production is slow because other than the music, it's a one man did all... So with a time, anyone can do it.
      80mm refractor is my favourite scope, one of the other videos on here shows a demonstration of an 80mm being computer controlled to capture the andromeda galaxy and then the moon, so it will give you an idea of the kind of scale.
      When choosing a camera for your telescope it is important to consider the image scale and the pixel size you are using, plus considerations for the atmospheres limitations, so high frame rate cameras provide much better means of data capture than filming it like this on a DSLR, but the large sensor size of a DSLR provides a wider field of view than the smaller sensors

    • @DarkCentre
      @DarkCentre  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you spanked out the cash for a h alpha solar filter then I envy you greatly, if you have a white light filter, then I would recommend buying a 1.25" mounted h alpha filter for the solar work, screw that puppy into the bottom of your eyepiece and you should be able to make out coronal mass ejections :)
      Thank you for watching and your support, it is very much appreciated!

    • @DarkCentre
      @DarkCentre  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A good h alpha set up to convert a telescope for solar is thousands, where as using a lower cost white light filter on the front and a h alpha filter on the eyepiece or high frame rate camera still has its dangers for solar work, so anyone doing this should ensure that their telescopes manual does not warn against it, many that have plastic internal components will have a warning, and one can never be to careful when it comes to burning an eyeball out of ones skull or worse the sensor on a camera ;)

    • @DarkCentre
      @DarkCentre  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Akshay S Hi Akshay, I am glad you enjoyed it. Excellent news, welcome to the club. The best telescope is the one you will use most, in the UK we have pretty terrible conditions most of the time with windows that open and close faster than a high street bank turns into a coffee shop. Plus dew will form up fast on optics on most nights in the UK so budget for dew control straight away as once condensation forms on your optics the session is over if you don't have it, which is a nightmare if you have gone somewhere dark to get away from local light pollution... they are pretty heavy on the battery juice though so it is worth working out how long your battery will last with it on (get a dedicated battery for it if you can. Personally I think it is a good starting point if you are looking to do eyeball astronomy and less likely to pursue astrophotography but if you wanted to venture into that I would start with an 80mm or larger ED refactor, double lens if you can, triplet if you get really lucky, the more elements a refactor has in its lens cell the better it is. Reflectors (unless they are specifically an astrograph) are designed for visual use so the mirror only has to be good enough for human vision and they are cheaper to make so the bigger telescope reflector design is always going to be cheaper and get more aperture for your money but there are many trade offs, take a look at both types of options that lay within your budget, download stellarium (opensource) and in the top right corner you can input your telescopes, eyepieces and or camera sensor details and it will show you the field of view that set up will yield, this should give you a good idea of what you could expect from each.... telescopes with high f numbers (double figures) are for really bright objects like the moon, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mars but not much else.... Be wary of other people opinion as the performance of a telescope is heavily dependent on local conditions which are constantly changing, lots of people give kit bad press when it is human error or conditional. Not all telescope of the same make and model are exactly the same and vary slightly, the more expensive they get the more uniform the high quality becomes but you don't always get what you pay for in astronomy, lots of expensive plastic out there... If someone recommends their scope to you, remember that everyone thinks they made the best decision when they spend a vast sum they have saved on something they've always wanted, so take everything with a pinch of salt and join as many forums as you can find :)

    Thanks for the great images. You have worked to get what you have. The critics above don't understand that single images can never show you the detail of actually looking through the eyepiece. Your skill is apparent. I have a 10 inch Celestron and can appreciate your talent. We used to do star parties which was very rewarding. Nothing like showing Jupiter to 8-10 year old and see them look around the end of the scope expecting to see something at the end. A lot of them walk away very quiet(or walking on air). Between having "older eyes" and light pollution I don't get out with my scope as much. Thanks.

    Loving this - you have a new subscriber. I'm a beginner and have been using a Skywatcher Heritage 130P Dob for a couple of years. I was wondering, with DSO's can you actually see them through the telescope or do they only reveal themselves with long exposure imaging? I am a photographer by trade so have a fair few cameras but I can't mount them on my telescope and anyway, they might not be ideal imaging systems due to IR cut filter etc. I am endearing pondering an upgrade, but until then I would love to know whether I can actually expect to visually observe Galaxies/Nebula with a 130mm/5" Dob? Also, I'm only on an AZ/ALT mount with no Go-To so finding objects can be tricky!
    Keep up the good work!

      While you can see galaxies and Nebula with a large aperture telescope with s low f/#. It takes a really big telescope and a very dark night to see much color. That is why I like using a camera. Plus you can share what you see.
      Why can’t you connect your camera to your telescope? I assume you have at least one DSLR as a professional. I use an unmodified Nikon D5500 APSC to get decent images through an 8 inch SCT.

      That is an excellent question. I believe it is a combination of factors. 1 That the high optical zoom is well beyond the range of steady hand holding. and this to number 2. that the auto focus on the camera tends to drift in and out changing the seeming brightness or sharpness of objects. 3 Auto white balance and loads of other things that i don't have space here for ha. Ive offered to give the scope to anyone willing to bring theirs and compare if it is better. No takers

    I enjoyed it! Great music to accompany it. Who are the artist of the two songs??? I have an LX90 8" and I am just getting some gear for some astrophotography. I'm definitely kicking myself for not going with the 200....Minor but very practical differences for astrophotography. But this is my first decent scope so I am sure there will be another one in the future and all the accessories that I am getting, for the most part, will be useful on a higher series. ie Series 5000 eyepieces and diagonal, cooled camera, electric/manual microfocuser etc. But, like others have said thanks for sharing!

      At lease the 8" is lighter and more portable, every cloud has a silver lining, once you have all the accessories you need upgrading gets easier but the costs never seem to stop, it is a bottomless pit sometimes.
      You are most welcome! Thanks for watching. Good luck with the new kit, I do love fork mounts.

    Nice telescope.Please can you show as some geostationary satellites?

    • @DarkCentre
      @DarkCentre  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +pronogon Good suggestion. Geostationary satellites remain in exactly the same position in the sky, they are place above the equator, due to their nature you wouldn't need the tracking ability which simplifies matters. The issue stems from their distance and how small they are which is a two fold issue, they reflect very little light so will be exceptionally dim, but their known position would make finding them easy but identifying them as anything other that a point source would be beyond this telescopes capabilities. The resolution of a telescope (the finest detail it can define) is determined by the aperture (diameter) of the telescope. This one is 14" which will allow it to resolve down to 1/3 of an arc second of the sky, but limitations of the atmosphere wont allow it to be pushed that far. So the short answer is sadly not... YET, if things go well the telescopes will keep getting bigger.

It covered the whole distance between the horizons in less than two minutes. Quite impresive. Even though i didnt now at the time it was ISS, i speculate it must have been a sattelite and i was right when i check the ISS live tracking site. spotthestation.nasa.gov/sightings/#.Vkjx5r-AkhQ. Sailors used the stars to navigate. The sun tells you the time, the moon tells you the day and the stars tell you the month. Nothing has changed in this regard for thousands of years. If the big bang theory is to be believed the stars would've moved out of their rotation around us by now. Navigating by the stars could not exist. The big dipper would've changed in size or cease to exist along with the other constellations.
      The picture of the moon during the day in this picture proves the moon isn't 238,000 miles away but right here in our atmosphere. The missing part of the moon is the same color blue as the sky and not black like outer space.
      So this FE is not convinced of a globe by these pictures. I will give it a thumbs up for very nice work.

      jc dova Thank you so much. The haters, ahhhh yes.... funny thing is this video wasn't intended to showcase the best it can do, more manage expectation of what slapping on a dslr to a massive scope does... it is the wrong camera for this scope. Image scale is important, pixel size and focal length are not a good pairing. I had intended to create a series of videos showing the different kinds of camera attached to different kinds of scopes to illustrate the importance of image scale and explain how the physical size of the detector and its pixel size affects the process... but all this would be lost on a hater expecting to see the American flag on the moon, but then this video was made for them, it was made for people like us that just want to share and enjoy, no matter what level or size of aperture. Clear skies!

      Nice scope too. I have the 8" version and I am just getting into astrophotography. I just need the wedge and focal reducer, then i should be good for planet and DSO. But I'm doing DSLR AP for now since I have the proper equipment for that. Later I might get an additional fast refractor on a german eq. with a cooled ccd mono. But I have a lot to learn about AP before I make that jump.

    • @DarkCentre
      @DarkCentre  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Jared Klatt Excellent news! the 8" is far easier to set up and handle and the shorter focal length will mean you get far more opportunities to use yours than I get to use mine.
      All of the footage in this video was produced with a DSLR...
      I don't use focal reducers, if I want a shorter focal length I use a different telescope, If I want a wider field of view I use a larger sensor, all of the footage in this video is using a full frame DSLR so a 35mm sensor, so yields the widest field possible.
      As for the wedge, stay away from a Meade one, they are cast Ai and not very good, Astro Engineering make excellent CNC machined wedges that cause far less problems and much easier to adjust under load.
      If you intend to keep it on the forks, why not mount the refactor on top of the OTA as a rich field scope / viewer... then when you can afford a dedicated GEM it will be there ready to swap over :) and can work as a guide scope for when you want to run really long exposures of deep space.
      I hope your skies are clearer than mine! the 14" suffers badly in high humidity, two dew bands on max still leaves an inner donuts on some nights.... It is as much a curse as it is a pleasure...

      You think money makes atmospheric turbulence disappear? A telescope of that size coupled with a good video camera capable of taking 60+ frames per second, however, can get images of the moon and planets rivalling the quality of the Hubble Space Telescope after stacking and processing to remove the effects of the turbulence.

    • @DarkCentre
      @DarkCentre  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There are many other consideration to take into account, as it is not just the telescope and a camera that are needed, but what is needed depends on what set up you want, like a professional photographer, different camera body and telescope configurations give different fields of view, so I have different telescopes and different cameras that I interchange to affect the image scale and field of view on a given combination.
      This video was showing the view through wide fields, the larger the physical size of the detector on a camera, the wider its field of view will be. So in the videos that are coming, you will be able to see how the different arrangements of cameras, on the same telescope, yield much different results. We will be going much much closer.

    Enjoyable video...especially on a rainy night like tonight...almost like I'm there. Great music selection, too...sets a great flavour for the viewing!

    LOL! For planets no need for big telescope, a 4" or 5" APO refractor is much better for less money. Big aperture telescope has more light gathering, works better on deep sky objects. Planets have plenty of light. so a small refractor works better.Bad seeing , upper atmospheric turbulences, jet streams, works against large aperture telescopes, some time makes it useless for the night. Also, a large SCT like this 14" OTA has large central obstruction 35%, reducing contrast, while a refractor has none and no bouncing of the light back and forth, between primary and secondary mirrors.

      I can afford it, I even have a C-11 SCT, not getting used much though!

      I'm a refractor guy, don't like SCT's much! All though, on good seeing nights the SCT is great, more light gathering, better for DSO's.

      What the heck, a flat earth?
      I can see what stars look like through my big telescope, why would I want to look at them on TH-cam?
      Seriously?
      I looked up what you asked, about 5 videos in all. My oh my.
      What we are seeing in these glimmering images are the results of 'digital zoom' while photographing points of light. Many are out of focus. The people doing it are sadly mistaken and don't know how to use their cameras.
      I think you and these unknowledgeable camera people should get some lessons on photography and in particular the algorithms behind 'digital zoom'. Or just study some photography blogs, cheaper than lessons.

    why do you think you should be able to see so much detail in the moon, its supposedly 249,000 miles away, lmao.

      Do you know what a telescope is designed for, right?

    • @DarkCentre
      @DarkCentre  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Why do you think you can't see more detail? What difference does it make how far away it is?The reason why you can see more detail is because the resolving power of an instrument is determined by the diameter of the collecting surface. So I do not 'THINK' I can 'see' more detail. It is an empirically based fact, not an opinion. The following link is an excellent explanation if you would like to check yourself.

      That is not very nice, the laughing my ass off aspect does imply grossly misplaced arrogance, but the 'jerk' bit was a bit excessive ;) ha ha, just kidding. Lets all try and be nice though.

      +serbanmike None yet but many many hours of footage are taken regularly and trawled through keeping an eye out for anomalous objects... That being said I see loads of stuff flying through the wider field telescope that is mounted on it taking frames every half second, things blip across the screen all the time, 90% have a rational explanation but plenty of things that make me go hmmmmm...
      In the future I hope to have three sites so I can calculate more data on asteroids... if you locked all three onto the same object you could calculate its speed and trajectory, wouldn't that be cool...
