Travels by Narrowboat - "Feeling The Heat" - S10E10

- Gooday all and Season 10 continues as Aslan and I journey south along an increasingly hot Oxford Canal, and drop through the final few locks to the village of Cropredy.
Here I take a quick look around this historic and relatively unspoilt canal-side village and also spend the night.
Next morning and due not only to the poor solar power situation, but also longterm 'financial' concerns, I decide to move on the few miles towards the large sprawling town of Banbury.

It is so good to see the Sun, when we are in November 🤗
Kevin, today’s cruise was an absolutely beautiful stretch the of Oxford Canal. Thank you for a tremendous day afloat!
Don't know why but I am not getting notifications on a lot of my subscibed videos. Well I may be late to watch this CHG but by golly you do the soul a world of good. Thank you so much.
Thanks again, CHG! Was a wonderful trip through beautiful scenery, felt like I was along for the ride. Could almost feel the heat through the monitor. You do a great job, as always, of creating an immersive experience for your viewers. Cheers, until next time!
My pleasure Chris, thank you.
Yes Kevin, another reason a I wish to visit England, I’m not only intrigued with the canals, but 25 Celsius sounds wonderful, compared to as u mentioned our Texas weather, and Okla where I live, wonderful climate it seems to me In England. I’d be in heaven at 77 degrees Fahrenheit, way too hot here in summer, although it’s 22 Fahrenheit right now 🥶
Best part of Friday. Kevin's on the cut with a new video.
This episode has me missing summer already and it's not even winter. Thanks for another good one, Kevin!:)
Love traveling with you…from Virginia USA
Welcome back
Evening Kevin. We waited to watch your next instalment until tonight, we have been away on "our jollies" the reception was rubbish so saved our 30 minutes with you and Aslan until now. WOW!!!! THAT WAS WORTH THE WAIT, the scenery was beautiful and we both said how it took us back to when we watched your first series, many moons ago. The tranquillity and peacefulness for the viewer was just beautiful. Your hard work in putting these videos together really does show through. I can't imagine the time it takes to do these and the tech knowledge, something i seriously lack and have no interest in. I do, however, appreciate that it is not an easy task so THANKS KEVIN. Right, got to go, STRICTLY is on HA HA!!! All the best Kevin, Floss and Jan.
Hi Flossy and Jan. Thank you for that. I'm always pleased to hear you've enjoyed and appreciated each episode. It is a lot of work but that's the joy of art, as they say - no pleasure without the pain. 🤗
Wonderful day for a cruise as always. 👍
👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Kevin 😊
Enjoyable cruise on a well kept canal, look forward to next vlog to see you make Banbury Cross,in a nice way of course
Banbury is very nice. Could've stayed a whole lot longer.
Awesome!
Great stuff, once again. Glad you enjoyed your brief stay in Cropredy, the sun always shines here, lol. It is usually a nice, quiet village until the Fairport Festival in early August when 15-20,000 turn up for a weekend's music fun. Looking forward to following the rest of your journey along the Oxford.
Didn't know about the festival. 20,000 sounds manic.
@@CountryHouseGent Yes, it transforms the village. Several fields on the east side of the canal are taken over for the music stages and others for camping/mobile homes etc. The canal gets busy, too, with boats moored everywhere. It's been going for years, started by Fairport Convention. Folk start arriving on the Wednesday, music really starts Friday and ends Sunday.
Great vlog! Great shirt! Woeful Alan Freeman impression! 😂
Impression, impression, what impression? That 'was' Alan Freeman. 🤔🤭
Beautiful start to the weekend! Thank you!
Just succumbed to long trousers now it's mid November Kevin! 😉
Top 5 in 2019. I was thinking top 1 or 2. Will and the Sikh. Need to do a season convoy with him. WINK
Kevin In Canada, shopping around local is a way to save money. It is actually cheaper to shop at your local butcher and farmers markets than it is to shop at the big brand store. We have a giant tiger with name-brand canned goods and items at a much-reduced rate. It pays to shop around. If I were, you'd ask the farms you pass if you could buy meat wholesale from them. My shopping around to lots of places has saved a lot of money. I always shop locally for the best products and services.
Best wishes, Kevin Tom Crosby YQR Regina Canada.
Spectacularly beautiful day!!! Thanks for taking us along!
RIP Bobby Ball.
Rock on Tommy. 😁
Just curious, what's the purpose of the ring on top of the exhaust stack? I know some have a cover to keep rain and such out but, I'm not sure what purpose the ring serves sense it's obviously not big enough to protect from the rain. Thanks for another entertaining video. Take care.
Hi Roger. It's called a splitter. Sends the exhaust gases up and sideways, as well as stopping it blowing chunks off the underside of bridges amd tunnels.
@@CountryHouseGent Makes sense. Thanks Kevin. Oh, like your music and your style. I've been a "Friday night with a couple of friends and a few cold ones" kind of player since my college days (which was many moons ago, lol) but have never seemed to be able to get past the intermediate level. But I have a hell of a time trying at least. Thanks again.
What I meant was what were the dates of these shots - since the weather is unseasonably warm I know it wasn't that warm yesterday. I know it was published yesterday and was very good, as usual. Next weeks still won't be current - right? Will it be in November? I'm seeing others with boaters having coats on and frost coming out of their mouths when they speak. Just curious. Thanks again for a great video.
Hi Betty. This particular video was filmed on the 3rd and 5th of September. As I said in a separate video at the time, I took a break for 4 weeks, the reasons for which were explained in that video and will form part of one or two upcoming episodes in Season 10. This has caused an inevitable disparity between filming and publication.
Just curious about your weather over there. I watched your episode on taking a break but didn't realize it was in September. Watching Robbie and one more narrowboater was confusing - I try to track directions of where everyone is going as the canals are far and wide in the UK. We're in the U.S. and old - we like to talk about health and weather so no worries on stalking. @@CountryHouseGent
I, too, was wondering what the dates were. Figured it was early September based on the vlogs of others.
I totally understand his caution for privacy as well as the many videos he has to edit. At least I know now that he is not current with the seasons.@@RVO3VOM
not many drone shots lately.
Best channel on TH-cam by far, keep up the good work and happy cruising 😊
Thank you Gary 🤗
Thanks so much Kevin, you and Aslan have got me through a lot of rough spots over the last few years. A very calming effect on my sometimes rattled brain. :)
Many thanks Peta, you're very kind. The therapeutic qualities of the series are a side effect I never saw coming - for myself as well as the viewer. It's incredible how many have drawn such comfort from it. 🙂
Thanks Kevin, so true! It's so lovely to get lost watching the beautiful scenery go by, and sometimes not so beautiful. I do hope people out there will learn to respect the waterways and not be adding to pollution with their rubbish. Can only hope I guess on that! My mum was a stickler when we were kids and out on a picnic to take any little scrap of rubbish home to dispose of. It starts with good parenting. Off to watch your latest! 🥰@@CountryHouseGent
Kevin And Aslan! Yes, the weekend stars here!❤️
I agree!
You are back. 🎉
Magic Kevin...simply Magic....Thank you for another trip on your boat 🤗
Great video again!!! THANK YOU!!!❤
Aslan is looking very yar and enhances the lovely countryside. The colouring is so good. I was exhausted when you got through all those locks…..you don’t need the services of a gym do you! A lovely lovely trip, thanks for the ride.
Cheers Rikki. Sure thing, the canals keep things trim. 😳🙂
Thanks CHG! Did this canal in 2018, bringing back some lovely memories. I’m sorry to say but I’ve been unfaithful this week and watched some vlogs from other boaters! Been looking for videos of Autherley Junction to Stourport as doing that route in mid May next year and it appears you haven’t travelled that canal yet. It’s reported to be the most beautiful canal on the network! I saw you ‘toss’ your salad onto the ground on another boaters vlog tho! 😂 Now off to see The ‘Death’ Cult in Norwich. Hope you are not too jealous! 🤘
Yes Helen, I am just a tad jealous. I believe they revived the "Death Cult" name for November's UK and Ireland tour? Have a great evening, you lucky . . .
@@CountryHouseGent🤣
I really do enjoy your videos hi from Portugal have a great weekend
Thank you for helping me put aside a moment each week for what may be my current therapy regimen. You're making great stuff that will outlive us all.
Cheers for that and it still amazes me how therapeutic the series has become to so many. Never saw that coming. Quite unexpected. Cheers again,
Perfect start to the weekend as usual especially when summer feels such a long time ago and sitting in front of the fire with only about 4 degrees outside 👍
Hi Kevin, absolutely fabulous.
Thank you, what blood pressure.
Pleased to hear it Gary. I'm still trying to convince the Minister for Health to provide episodes of TBN on the NHS.
Looks beautiful!
This is an episode I will watch over and over again to see the beautiful countryside and peace! Yes, a bow to the "Good old days"! Thank you for letting me tag along on these wonderful travels!
Many thanks, you're very welcome.
I've jumped ahead of you virtually and caught you up in Oxford courtesy of Narrowboat Will whom you bumped into in Jericho. The wonders of time travel.
Yes I thought Will was just a boater trying to get into the lock, so I offered to help. 🙂
Enjoyed very much, beautiful scenery. What a lovely canal that is! I’m glad we didn’t get the 40 degree heat 🥵look forward to the next one
Hi Kevin! I'm playing catch up by doing a CHG binge watch. Forward to E11!
You have a job. Keeping Aslan functioning. Documenting what you do, and occasionally, spell checking a moron who pops up! Just keep doing what you do, screw the noise.
Wonderful video as always. Quick question. Hope you don't mind. A couple of weeks ago when you took the very brief editing break you mentioned a close call perhaps in a lock with a hint it would be in a video? Don't know if I missed it, was it the emergency stop for the on-coming boat or something yet to come. The editing break video left us on somewhat a 'cliff hanger". "Curious Minds What to Know" Sorry if I am being to nosey.
No you haven't missed it, that'll be in a video a bit later. 🙂
@@CountryHouseGent Thanks! I was worried that it was so traumatic that you decided to erase from your memory banks! Will stay tuned!
@rustyroseadventures 14.56 your van mate 😊😊❤❤
What a lovely memory - quintessential England, in the summer 🌳🌿🌱
Sending you a little "thank you $" after work tonight. It won't be much, but I like to be demonstrative. 😅
Had no choice but to work for my father (in my 30s) He'd bought a motel & RV Park in a Colorado town of less than 200 permanent residents -- I hear you about small town grocers They know they have you, the alternative is granola bars and peanuts. In their defense, they have to pay the looong shipping rates!
It's a definite monopoly in some of these places. Even worse if there's several business in a small area, all in cahoots.
Keeping it for Saturday Kev.
Almost to Banbury! Then to Kidlington and on to Oxford! Super fun watching your adventures Kevin. Hope you and Aslan will share many more of your adventures with us.
Plenty still to come Christopher between Banbury and Kiddlington, including that huge long baron stretch. 😳
Hope you stop at The Perch at Binsey Lane, The Trout at Wolvercote and of course the Head of the River in Oxford. Been a very long time in deed since I have been to any of them! Oh, we are mates now so call me Chris
Great stuff as ever Kevin! I'm watching in the UK and bearing in mind all the heavy rain and high winds we are having at the moment, it's a bit surreal to see you in the glorious sunshine. Hope you are tucked up somewhere safe and secure.
Great video But they always are I make time tune in watch them cheers
Everthing looks, 🌞 and feels better when the sun is shining !
Thanks Kevin for taking us along on this beautiful cruise through lovely countryside in one of my favourite parts of the world. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Looked like no wind in the higher temps... Great to catch another episode! What I like best is your exceptional cinematography skills. I appreciate the shot setup effort you are obviously doing. Great video, Kevin!
I appreciate that Craig.
Always a great ride Kevin. Love it!
We travelled that route many years ago in a convoy of 3 and my friend in front kindly set the locks for me. The reason I mention this is that at one lock he left his boat like you did just forward of the lock he had left, went back to drain the water for me, this unfortunately pulled his boat back to the lock gates & his rudder (no fender !) was clamped between the gates a water pouring onto his back deck. After much effort & refilling the lock we managed to free his boat but had to stop after for a bevy 😂 to calm nerves 💕🦆
That sounds terrifying Pam. Yes, several cups of tea required I bet, and something stronger later. 🙂
@@CountryHouseGent Didn’t bother with the tea lol. My mate had scoliosis and I had broken a rib bow hauling a boat a couple of days before. So many hilarious memories that still make me smile. Have a mooring on the River Nene now but would love to get back to the canals and meet up with old friends. Ps. @ Croperdy Timothy West & Prunella hit a boat head on after coming thru the lock by the house/ a fisherman caught a duck/ the cows swayed with the music from one boat/ a moorer stuck his pin in a wasps nest & loads of other funny events 💕🦆
Thanks for the delightful journey down the canal Kevin in lovely weather as well! Gorgeous scenery!
Kevin, some motorcycle trivia about Cropredy. That canoe club yard by the bridge was a Laverda dealership in the 70s-80s and Nick Saunders lived in Cropredy in the 90s when he did his fastest man around the world trip on a Triumph 👍
Well I didn't know that, Ken. I used to regularly read about Nick when I subscribed to MCN back in the day.
WOW! That was a very thorough video and must have been a lot of work filming and editing. Don't get burned out in that heat.
Why are your videos only available in some Amazon Prime stores? Wouldn't you generate more income by having them listed and available in more countries on Amazon Prime?
Hi James. Unfortunately it's not my decision on which 'territories' the series is published. If it was, I'd have it available worldwide.
@@CountryHouseGent That's a shame as I'm sure it would do well and would add incremental revenue. I'll send a complaint to my local Amazon store asking why it isn't available...
Another lovely film. Great camera work. And the working of the canal waterway… the lock gate teeth clicking, the sound of the wood being coaxed with Aslan putting in the background… it’s musical.
Some beautiful sites in your travels. Thanks for sharing it with us.
In the first 5 minutes, two references your 'foreign' viewers won't get...Fluff Freeman and Smashie & Nicey!!! As the say in the USA "Way to go Kev!"😁
Got to keep them on their toes 😆
I guess this would be only one of the few times you would be willing to moor up under a tree for the shade? But alas the solar panels wouldn't be effective as you said It's fun how different places have different energy. Do you ever come by people with children living on a narrowboat? Thanks again for another beautiful ride! -Cheers from Seattle!😊🤙
Yes Ann, any shade would have been welcome, though later when I moored under some, I had to move cos no solar. 😎
We would like to see you cook. We always enjoyed that portion of the show
Hi Pete. Great to hear that, thank you. Check out my latest video here th-cam.com/video/4a2ygTsD2uI/w-d-xo.html
That tune brought back memories of being a child in Ireland sitting outside on a sunny summer afternoon listening to Alan freeman as he counted down the top 20 hit records of the week.
Alan Freeman was incredible and somehow became an almost god like figure to us younger generations.
and for me it was laying on the beach with friends on a hot weekend with everyone listening to the countdown show on our 'trannies' Life was much more shared & communal then & which song would make it to number 1 was a thing.
This was the first time since season one that I remember you saying, “amazing “! But you didn’t talk to the duck!!! 😂. Thank you 🙏 for sharing this experience.
😆 On the advice of my therapist, I only talk to the ducks in private now.
Or better yet; Get the most watched narrow boat channels and have a race from one end of the canal system to the other end. With some kind of challenge in certain locals for bonus points. We can call it Narrow Boat IRONMAN😉 Or is this idea jumping the shark?
Some of the best editing I have ever seen, well done.
Really solid episode on the Oxford stretch. Yay... it's the weekend. Thanks CHG!
Yes this part of the Oxford is so natural and unspoilt. Such great colors and expanse. Cheers for watching,
Happy weekend you all from rainy Ireland
And to you Peter.
Hey Kevin, great video, thanks for sharing X X X
💜💙💚
Tranquility in a word
Happy weekend to you from Canada 🇨🇦
And to you Carolyn.
Hello Kevin mick from Hull another lovely episode hope you are very well and I will look forward to your next episode 😊😊😊
So lets take the magic eletric out of your life !!
Thank you so much, for warming an old woman’s heart! All that lovely sun ! Just about floated away in my camper yesterday, and then it snowed! Puddles as deep as my ankles!😅have a pork pie for me!😉
At this time of year I recommend feet up by the fire Marion. 🤗
@@CountryHouseGent very civilized in a boat, with your Morsø oven, all I have is a Truma gas oven. Good enough, it keeps me warm.
@@CountryHouseGent tell me, what is the relative humidity in your narrow boat? Do you know. My step mum lives in Devon and she’s hating the cold wet. I have 48 % in my camper. Comfortable. She has over 70%😱
Thank you, Kevin, for more interesting cruising! It took me a while to get it watched; it’s been an off and on busy week for me. But I made it! Next I’ll watch your newest one. Thanks!
I had engine troubles in may '22 and li.ped into Cropredy. Loved the marina and the village so much, that im still using it as my base
Kevin, I Love your videos! You show the Good , Bad, and Ugly of the whole narrowboating scene ! Great camera / audio / mixing / presenting work !
BRAVO !
SBF
Kevin, I’m admiring the view and wondering if at times certain canals are not useable because of low water levels? 😮 here in Pennsylvania we are experiencing low water levels in some of our reservoirs for drinking water. Can’t say I remember this happening as a child. This particular ride on Aslan is breathtaking. Cheers, Charlie from Pennsylvania 😊
Thanks
Awesome Nigel, thanks indeed. Always enjoy knowing how much the videos are enjoyed.
I lived in this area for many years. If you think it is nice now you should have seen it before they built the M40 motorway. Especially Banbury. Cropredy, spiritual home of Fairport Convention.
canal trust and english heritage need to be paying you kev. idylic scenery and great narrative. thanks for your hard work as alway,s ,
Hello there sir, Oxford is looking as beautiful as I remember it..Although I will say it looks even better from the canal perspective..The Canal has been my go to spot to relax over the past 20 years i just find it all so relaxing..Great video thanks ❤
I always imagine the shopkeepers in the small towns as pepperpots from Monty python. 9 out of 10 housewife’s can’t tell the difference between whizzo butter and this dead crab
Lovely to watch and see this section of the Oxford, seeing with mixed emotions. Back 1988 we were doing the Thames Ring and starting up one morning near Cropredy my wife slipped on the morning dew covering the grass around a lock and twisted her ankle. Bless her heart our 12 year old daughter stepped up and took over as much lock work as she could. Wife by now was getting maximum sympathy by sitting in the foredeck going ouch whenever she was spoken too by passers by.
We continued north and east until we made Blisworth Tunnel Boats where we swapped the boat for a taxi to Northampton hospital. Came back from there with a set of crutches and an Xray of a broken bone. Oh the fun of a British holiday. Agree with you that the scenery is wonderful
Cropredy: Tranquility Base with Heat! We're inching our way into another New England winter, so revisiting summer minus the actual heat was a delightful treat......Cheers
Bitter frost today so strande to see you sizzling in the sun grand views and content tc Kevin luv from us oldies 👍🤗🤗🤗
Happy to bring some 'warm' memories during the chilly season. 🙂
Nice one Kevin, I’m now down to 4 boating channels, yours being in the top three, if I see another naff boating thumbnail conning the uninitiated into thinking boat life is anything other than a ‘gentle life’ I’ll stop making mine… I am yet to do the section you’re on, the south Oxford looks amazing…
And there was me thinking the sole reason for the existence of Cropredy was Fairport Convention.
Great update fella "Cropredy" sounds like a far far away galaxy the way you and I would say it. 😁
Great vlog Kevin. Stay safe my friend 🙏 ❤ xx
Very nice great shot of the ant/spider , against Allan composition
The short break in videos Kevin let's us revisit that late summer warmth, and what lovely stretch of canal. A welcome escape from these wet and dark November days.
