- Aslan & I continue along the South Oxford Canal towards the tiny area of Enslow and it's Wharf, where shortly afterwards we moor for the night.
The next morning I set off for Thrupp, another small but historically significant canalside area.
Along the way however and whilst descending the shallow Shipton Weir Lock, I'm given a clear lesson on the dangers of becoming distracted and complacent . . .

Hi Kev just a quick update , I bought my narrowboat less than 5 minutes after the survey was finished , the worst thing he found was a leaky hose in the external gas locker so i'v had both hoses replaced and the rest is maintenance which is nothing so I'm really happy and that's really good for a 1995 boat th-cam.com/video/pfkZXDSk8h4/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Ah Nathan that's quite fantastic. Sounds like a goodun. I'll check out the video. Are you spending Christmas onboard? Edit: She's a beaut and a side hatch as well. Nowt better than a summer's day moored up by the side hatch watching the ducks and boats go by.
@@CountryHouseGent your reply is perfectly timed as I'm actually walking back to my house now and getting my two rescue dogs so we can spend our first night aboard and might stay on board until new year and yes I love the side hatch especially next to the galley and I also love the big windows in the saloon perfect for duck watching on the canal with a coffee and the best bit is she wasn't even advertised for sale because I went out for a bike ride saw the hire company at the marina and popped in and asked and they weren't going to sell her until Easter so they ripped my hand off
@@nathanberry4339rescue dogs. Not just dogs. lol
You could be considered a national treasure Kevin for those of us that follow you! Have a great Christmas pal!
Another fine video. Thank you for your uploads during 2023. May I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
Kevin, so glad to see that you and Aslan are OK. That lock ledge was a serious hazard! In a future vid, perhaps you could discuss whether there be any rhyme or reason as to where and why such ledges exist. Blessings on you, mate for all your hard work and excellent videography.
Wow !!! I spent 10days on a Narrowboat those ledges terrified me in locks !! It's so easy to destroy a Narrowboat, whilst I love them this was the main reason why I wouldn't buy one as a single boater ! Locks and ledges are what nightmares are made off 😢
Phew, that was a close call! Glad you managed to avoid disaster. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Kevin. 🎄 🎆
My heart was in my throat as Aslan tilted. Wow! Beautiful countryside. Merry Christmas, Kevin. 🌲⛄
Merry Christmas Kevin. Been sharing a cuppa from across the pond every episode since season two.
Amazing Aslan! 🎉the dog and the boat. Always look forward to Fridays and a new episode. This was very enjoyable. Thank you and a very Happy Christmas to you CHG 🤙❄️🎅
Wow! I would have been scared too. Thank the canal gods all was well. You certainly do see life, I feel a bit guilty sitting comfortably watching your world go by. I agree it’s not all sunshine and honey. My thanks as ever.
They actually replaced those dangerous lock gates at Shipton last week.
So pleased Aslan lives on. Although, what a scare for you. Thank you so much for your videos. I always smile when a new one pops up in the feed. Season's greetings.
Hey Kevin, hope your Aslan is ok after the lock incident, hope you gave the CRT the riot act and informed them of the lack of signage informing the canal users of the ledge.
Friday again and currently watching this new episode. Essential Friday evening viewing in our house y’ know!❤️
That was really annoying at Shipton Weir. That must happen a lot and there ought to be warnings about the ledge. Glad you had a lucky escape it could have been so bad. Wishing you well.
whoa! that was too close for comfort!!!
Genuinely believed at the time that everything was about to take a sudden change of direction.
Phew!!!!! That made my jaw drop open and my heart skip a beat....... glad all ok Kevin. I can see why you decided to take time for yourself to rest that must have been scarey. Few months later now, Father Christmas is on his way, so we would like to wish you a wonderful Christmas and very Happy New Year. Thanks for sharing your life with us Kevin, it always brightens our week and gives us an opportunity to endulge in our ritual of "cuppa and cake with Kev" all the best for now, keep safe, keep smiling and keep travelling. Floss and Jan xx
Whilst cruising the waterway and you're done for the day that's a mooring.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Been following you for ages it seems like and am still enjoying your videos 😊. Looking forward to seeing more in 2024!
🎄HAPPY HOLIDAYS, KEVIN !!!🎄
AS usual. Kevin, you provide a relaxing video, then fun along with a nail-biting adventure! You always give such a great experience, Kevin.
Can only imagine the frightening moments as Aslan was tilting!!
Thankfully, a fellow-boater was there to shout a warning. Gratefully, there was very little damage to the interior.
My husband and I look forward each week to your adventures and your down to earth take on your life and things in general.
Here's wishing you peace and contentment in 2024, and much thanks for what you bring into the world.
HUGS from Arkansas. 😊🖐😊🖐😊
Ooo that Lozenge lock is tricky. It's best to stay in the middle - which is difficult on your own ....very long centre line needed I guess. Glad you were able to sort it out
Yes the problem is getting assure and/or keeping the boat in the middle while you're on the shore operating the lock.
Merriest of Christmases, Kevin! Your videos keep me afloat. I love each one. Friday might just be my favorite day of the week! Cheers, my Friend!
So scary. Glad nothing else was damaged other than the drawer.
Saving this for my Saturday morning ritual of coffee, toast Aslan & Kevin. Can’t wait
CRT should put a sign up about the hidden ledge in that lock. Happy Christmas Kevin.
Wow Kevin, thank goodness Aslan, you, and season 10 are all safe! What beautiful countryside. Most of my youtubes I lay my tablet down & listen to but never yours - I must WATCH 😊 Such a great job of photography/filming and editing. I enjoy your episodes here in West Texas with my Saturday morning coffee; I swear my BP goes down as soon as I hear Aslan's engine. Thanks as always & a Merry Christmas to you across the Pond. --Candy
Hope you had a nice Christmas Kevin. Your videos are simply wonderful to watch.
Glad Aslan was ok, what a scary moment 😮.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 😊❤😊 Hope you can take a winter rest and take care of Aslan, she seems to need her engine tighten up a little bit. She gives me great comfort hearing her clacking on and you sharing your wonderful cooking skills. Take care Kev and safe travels. ❤Tx🇺🇲❤
Whew! That episode in the lock was scary, too close for comfort! The fact that nothing got damaged is absolutely amazing! I’m thankful, to say the least. Thank you again for another beautiful cruise! See you again soon from over here in Portland, Oregon. Merry Christmas, Kevin!
Have a Merry Christmas and stay warm. Last video was very beautiful as is this one.
What a great looking dog Aslan is. I cant begin to imagine the nightmare dealing with a shedding long haired shepherd. You could knit a sweater per day with the amount a shorthair shepherd sheds.
Ay he's a wooly boy for sure and quite the fusspot.
@@CountryHouseGent the shepherd is a very vocal breed. Hey aren’t for timid owners.
Awwww so glad you and Aslan were ok could see how shuck up you were felt for you tc thinking of you Seasons Greetings 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🤗
Phew!! Dangerous situation, zombies arrive on towpath! 🤣 so happy Aslan made it out of the lock, happy travels..
Thanks for the video. I’m glad that you and Aslan are both safe and sound, and not eaten by that lock.
Merry Christmas and I’ll catch up with you both in the new year.
🙂🐿🌈❤️
Greetings Kevin
You're doing an 'Alan'
Aka not slowing Aslan down enough before stepping off with the centre line.
Hope you're doing well.
Happy Crimbo for tomorrow wherever you may be.
NB:
Leaning Aslan.
Those diamond shaped locks were NOT meant for three boats !!!
They are designed for one boat only.
Their prime purpose is water moving volume.
Have a Merry Christmas Kevin! All the best and thanks as always for taking us along.
Thanks for the content Kev (Aslan) nothing better than a stroll down a canal to chill out too 👌
Panic stations Kevin my god could have been a lot worse glad you and Aslan are ok
Jeez, that snafu in the lock was scary. I needed to pour a big glass of wine! Glad you and Aslyn are safe!
Merry Christmas Kevin x and all the very best for 2024 ❤
Kevin, I have been wondering all week what had happened. So glad that Aslan and you are OK. Have a Very Merry Christmas 🎄 from the States.
Lucky escape! Scary . Hope there is no damage. And Merry Christmas 😊
Merry Christmas 🎄 Kevin and Aslan. From your friends Leilani and Peter in California. ❤
So pleased your boat was ok after the ledge accident.
Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎄 Kev and a very Happy New Year X X X
That guy trying to extract his golf ball from inches high rough is still a significantly better golf player than I am. My ball would be up in a tree somewhere.
Hey Kevin. You should see what happens when words are misconstrued in the comment sections. Shadow banning and deletion occur regularly. People are so easily offended these days. Have fun on the canals, and watch your mouth. lol I am happy to see so much beautiful countryside in England.
Merry Christmas, Kevin, and Happy New Year, all the best!!!! narrow escape for Aslan in this post -- again you exhibited your usual poised response to a tense situation -- your remarkable video storytelling skill, honed these past years, was movingly displayed in this episode -- you recount the emergent event at Shipton Weir Lock with sparse narration, letting the visuals and the ambient sound tell the story -- I was struck by the elegance of that approach...
Whew you & Aslan are very fortunate after that close call! Thank you for the scenic ride Kevin and all the best to you in 2024 & Happy Trails as we say in the USA!
Thanks!
Thank you so much Carolyn, you're very kind. Yes it must have been divine intervention that stopped the lock incident becoming something far worse. 🫣
Merry Christmas, My good friend Kevin. Best wishes this holiday season. May 2024 be prosperous for you. Keep up the excellent work. Sending you a holiday, Guinness, for Christmas. Tom Crosby YQR Regina Canada.
Hello Kev. Nice canal the Oxford but the signal most of the way is rubbish. Nice remote moorings though. 🫵👍👍
Yay how's it going Will? Agreed, the last 10 miles of the Oxford wasn't the most inviting section I've ever done. In fact I put the finishing touches to the final episode yesterday - I wasn't kind to the last 10 miles, or Oxford itself. Ah well, I speak as I find. You make a little cameo at the end. 😆
Just stated watching. Been on pins and needles with every lock you've worked that last few episodes. This will be the one it appears. Assume you got under control before any disaster. Streaming now and Season's Greetings!
Same 😳EVERY SINGLE LOCK 😳
I was so relieved that everything and everyone was safe in the end - except for the drawer, I do hope that it’s recovering nicely from its traumatic experience. No tears before bedtime for Kevin ❤
😂@@SecretSquirrelFun
Thank you Kevin for yet another very well filmed video, showing the beauty of the canal system and our lovely English countryside. We are so lucky to have this available for us to enjoy. I expect like me that you will once again celebrate Christmas day alone. Best wishes and we`ll try not to get too sozzled this year. 😉😊
You could consider securing your harddrives to your desk, or a wall, with velcro
I got a little weak kneed right beside you, near the end. That was a different view of Aslan, inside, than we typically see. I didn’t think it was Aslan. I backed it up a couple of minutes to try and figure out who’s boat it was. Dazed and confused but still enjoyed your video, as always. VERY pleased ( but probably can’t compare with YOUR relief) that Season 10 footage is still intact and available. Sometimes it doesn’t take much to see everything tossed up in the air and a major repeat is necessary. We’ve all (I think) experienced it at least once but glad it wasn’t today! Cheers, Kevin. I hope you were able to sleep well that night!
Wherever you are moored up Kevin, a very merry Christmas and a really zapping 2024! loving the "tranquillity" of the canal boat life - keep it up please 🎄🎄🎅🎅🫖🫖
Have a very merry Christmas Kevin and a New Year of hopes realized. Thanks for bringing all of us viewers along! Glad you and Aslan are well.
We used to get English Meatrolls (he says carefully) frequently at boarding school and they were known by their proper name which you're not allowed to say here. We were 14 years old and it occurred to none of us to smirk, as 14-year olds do very readily to every innuendo. Why? Because there was no innuendo. But I boldly went where no American has been before, and wrote it into my comment to your video. For the first time ever (and I've been here for some time), I experienced a TH-cam pop-up asking me if I REALLY wanted to use this word. I just said "yes" and as far as I know, the result is still live and smouldering in the comments section of that video.
"... smoldering..." 😂perfect!
You are a strange person
Why? @@jerbear7952
Cheers Kevin for another year of adventures. Wishing you Festive joys.. Barry the Pasty..
Wow that was scary. The next time you have Aslan out of the water you should look at her starboard hull to ensure that there wasn't too much damage. I am so glad that the apparent damage is minimal. Great video as always Kevin. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful new year!
Merry Christmas CHG and thank you for the terrific Season 10. We always love the throwback appearance of the drovers hat whenever it occurs. Your channel is Numero uno…..We never miss an episode.
You must have a very good new year.
Cheers
Thank you Geir and to you.
Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.I’m so glad the lock incident wasn’t serious.A few years ago we had a problem going up the Wigan flight and it was terrifying.Luckily our boat was ok,but I know what went through your mind.Looking forward to more episodes of peace and tranquility in 2024,Cheers.
Kevin I Really enjoy your travel especially season 5 on the bigger waters hope you have another great season .
Thanks again your fellow groundhog.
That was a close 1. Glad Aslan is ok
Glad Aslan came through ok, and you too of course. Those edge of the cliff moments are always harrowing. Been nice if the “guide” let you know of that locks awkward configuration, or a sign at the lock even. Hopefully that’s a one off. That canal is so beautiful though, just a peacefulness about it all the way so far. 👍
Merry Christmas Kevin!
Ouch, the ledge in the lock needs to be sign posted... Kevin, I was a little concerned that your laptop seemingly holds all your work on its hard drive! You really must back up regularly to some external drives to ensure you don't lose your footage! Wishing you a Good Christmas and a Happy New Year. 🎄✨
Kevin, I get to travel (in my mind) all throughout the network of the beautiful canals of rural England... you get to time travel. I say that, because you must have recorded this episode several days/weeks prior to the time I watch it, and it IS only when I watch your travels that "we visit." So... Merry Christmas CHG! Hope you get to cook some sort of a feast... and hope you get to share some good times with friends. Cheers, and again, Merry Christmas to you!
I thought the pigeon impersonation was really good and original until I saw your facebook page with a picture of you and your tutor. 😉
Thinking of you on Christmas in the Pacific Northwest, Kevin. I hope the day finds you well! ✌️
Ah thank you so much and especially thank you for your support through out the year. Best wishes to you for 2024. 🙂
Hi Kevin
Thanks for all your vlogs this year, we are looking forward to following your adventures in 2024
Stay safe and stay warm
Jane & Martin.
Wow Kevin that was squeaky bum time in that lock, glad it ended well 👍
Indeed, that was a close one sir! Brilliant that Aslan came through okay as did your laptop, recording and editing kit! Looking forward to seeing Oxford and all the pubs; The Trout, The Perch at Binsey Lane, and The Head of The River. Be well Kevin!
(Following since episode 1 season 1) 😎👍
Awesome, great to hear that Craig and thank you very much.
Merry Christmas to you and family!
That was so scary! So glad all is ok
Near disaster all part of life’s rich pageant I guess. Glad all ended well. Been following you since you bought Aslan. Doing some editing of old movies and just discovered Aslan moored at Hawkesbury Junction back in May 2011. Gave me quite a thrill, I do know she wasn’t yours then but she’s the star really. Anyway Happy New Year.
So glad you & Aslan are okay. The brief video of you after the event shows the blood drained from your face... you were very pale & it looked like your mouth was dry as well. I think we all felt that way with you because the regular viewers would know it's not just a boat, but your home and your living. Also,ut I imagine she's pretty much a member of the family. Thankfully, all is well. Praying for a very Happy Christmas🎄 and for a fabulous New Year. 🎉🎆
Yikes! So glad a disaster was avoided and you and Aslan are okay. May the New Year some with less scary events. 😄 -Cheers from Seattle!
Wishing you a very merry Christmas and safe and Happy New Year from Australia. Thanks again for your awesome video content. 😊 best regards Deb

Great video as usual Kevin, I wish you a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year .
I'm glad Aslan and you are both safe after that loch! Wishing you a Happy Holiday from Missouri, USA Kevin. Stay safe!
Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones Kevin and many thanks for your VLOG. Watching your VLOG has become a bit of a Saturday morning ritual as I drink my coffee here in Canberra.
Red on red, unless communication between decides

Thank you to you both, for watching and for your fine messages and support through out the year. Best wishes for 2024.
Thanks Kevin 😊
Hello Kevin, Merry Christmas to you and a Happy New Year! Thank you for taking us with you on your canal adventures.
Merry Christmas 🎉 & a happy new year !
Hello Kevin, I am a new viewer to your channel after watching everything available on Amazon and now here. I thoroughly love watching your adventures with Aslan. I can tell from your references you seem to enjoy Sci-fi shows from Star Trek to Star Wars. I must say that your throttle control reminds me of something in the Tardis. Thank you for sharing your life with us and the soundtrack of Aslan’s engine propelling you through the history and current events of your home’s beautiful landscape.
Thank you so much. I appreciate that. 🙂
Have a wonderful time over the festive period. Thank you for the amazing content ❤
Thank you! You too!
Merry Christmas, Kevin! May it be a loving one and 2024 bring you good health and peace!
Good view of my golf course Kevin, was lovely weather when you were in the area. Such a nice spot down next to the canal at pigeon lock.
That was quite the golf course.
Merry Christmas Kevin! Love that Aslan beautiful noise - really appreciate your videos; many thanks and blessings!
