Hey guys, just wanted to give everyone a heads up, we had a mix up in our editing process and the photo you see when I’m talking about the night watchman’s story is the wrong one. The correct image can be found here: www.pinterest.com/pin/592012313486643648/
So glad you covered this topic when I was little me an my sister were terrified of dogman anytime we went camping in Michigan .the lore I always heard in elementary was that dogman was a escaped test subject from a government lab. Don't live in Michigan anymore but can confirm it does suck
I live in Oklahoma and I have encountered 5 dogmen from when I was 15 to mid 18 before they seemed to have moved on for now. They have killed 2 of our big dogs, some of the neighbors cows, and have on several occasions gotten within 60 feet of us seemingly just to see what we will do. I don't normally fear death, but when ever they are close, they trigger a immediate flight response. I remember the first time I encountered one, thinking that no one would believe me, that I had just seen a glimpse of this thing standing just behind a fence before darting away when I shined my light on it. Their eyes glow even in low light conditions.
i live in michigan, i have a family friend whose grandpa SWEARS he saw the dogman. everyone called him crazy, and made him out to be crazy and as a like 11 y/o he did seem weird. but getting older i can see how not being believed would drive you insane. i was terrified at the time cause we were camping and sleeping after hearing about the story was awful. now i love learning about this stuff, i wish i remembered more or i could ask him about it
I grew up in Michigan, and in early 2017, I started going on night walks down trails or just around nearby towns. One night around 1-2am, I drove to the Alma Public Library to walk the short trail nearby. I got out of my car and took maybe 20 steps towards the gazebos behind the library. I saw a very tall man laying on the bench of a picnic table under the central gazebo covered in a tarp or dirty blanket. I stopped immediately standing quietly trying to get a better look at this guy. A few seconds later, completely silently, this man sat up twisting around looking in my general direction. He was wearing a gray husky mask that looked incredibly real. I quickly jogged back to my car. There was now a large tree blocking the view of the guy, but when I pulled out of the parking lot, he was gone. This guy was most likely a hobo, but the dog mask still makes me shiver.
I'm from Oscoda and I take a lot of road trips. I've been all over Michigan and I can never find anyone else that's heard of the dogman or the wendigo. I've seen maybe 1 dogman poster in Traverse City but that's it. It seems like every town north of the Zilwaukee has a Bigfoot statue though.
Have you tried asking if they saw a werewolf instead? 😂 Being serious though I get why they wouldn’t share a story if they have one. Bigfoot kind of makes scientific sense. No way for dogmen/werewolves to be something made by evolution though imo.
Alpena area here. Alpena and Alcona counties talk about it a lot but that's mostly because a local radio station plays The Legend a million times during October for Halloween. Can't say I've seen any Bigfoot statues around here, though I know a couple houses with wood cutouts of him on the sides of the road, mostly to catch your eye when you're driving at night lol
I'm from Michigan near the Traverse City area. In the legend song that is played there is a verse about screams in the night near Bellaire in 1977. My dad was around 13 and lived there at the time. He has said that he distinctly remembers that. Also I've heard things in the woods that fit the legend very closely
My stepdad John Chandler was a radio DJ who worked alongside Steve Cook who wrote the Dogman song. He is certain that Cook blew the entire thing out of proportion and that we Michiganders simply now capitalize on the whole Dogman theme. Hilariously, around this same time my stepdad got himself locked out of his office after putting on a string of songs. He went out onto the balcony to hook himself up with a funny joint and ended up having to scale down the building and sneak past his boss as he came back in. As for myself on the dogman.... it's always a neat story but the UFOs are more prevalent. Seriously, everyone out here has a UFO story... it's insane. If you ever want an awesome movie suggestion that plays up on all of the quirks of Michigan, you need to find Jeff Daniels' Escanaba in da moonlight. Great show. We watch it on Thanksgiving.
The story at the end reminds me of the dog headed men talked about in various European texts. They were even given a scientific name by scholars, Cynocephaly, and one of them was even canonized as a catholic saint.
I stayed out on Bray Road all night on the last full moon in June 2020 which was a Strawberry Moon and the only thing that scared me was the horses when they screamed as I parked my car by some random farmers field. I can say that Bray Road is a small, short, farm road with nothing more than a few trees by it. There's not enough brush nearby to hide even a few deer at this point. Believe what you want to, but as someone that had heard of the beast of bray road for years I had to find out. I'll have to start recording when I do stupid things like that ig lol.
I swear I saw it in the lower peninsula by Presque Isle by the shores of a lake near the cabin our family was renting at the time. I was so terrified to see something staring back from the trees I took off running to the house and couldn’t look back

I find it intensely interesting as well because I’ve made that connection before. Their are so many lycanthropy stories within so many cultures that barely have contact such as the mentioned Inuit dogmen and berserkers, but speaking of berserkers, their is also the prospect of using hides or skins to become these half man-half animal hybrids such as the obvious Navajo ****Walker (taboo to say), the European Cynocephali, the Scottish/Gaelic leshy/seal shapeshifters, and even the story of Thiess of Kalterbrun, a man who claimed to be a werewolf who traveled down to hell to kill demons and witches to prevent crops from dying.
Have you guys heard about the Cinocephali? a lot of tribes and civilizations around the world speak about groups of dog headed men and they kinda match the Dogman in some ways.
Yes! Tons of legends! There's apparently an island of them off India. A region in African mountains. A region in South America in forested Brazil, I think. The Paiute legends. Remus and Romulus of Rome and the Roman battle of Cynocephalus...without mention of dogmen. Rougarou. Loup garou. Old maps show Boston labeled as "nation des loups" (look at old maps of lake Champlain to find that) where there's an abandoned town called Dog Commons, something to that affect, near Salem, MA. It's everywhere
Hey , thank you for another great video..one question, can you link the "ONSTAR call" or( if you did, let me know where I missed it in the description)..thanks for the great content, glad I found your channel 😁
I know you made this a while ago, but thought I'd throw my two cents in. I'm from MI and my dad insists the Dogman or at least a Dogman lives in the wetlands of western and southern Lower Michigan. But Yoopers (folks from the Upper Peninsula) insist there's one or more in the Hiawatha National Forest. From what I've gathered, the Michigan Dogman is supposed to be fond of wetlands and swamps and heavy forest. So... There's probably one in the Seney Wildlife Preserve XD
I used to live and work around Germantown, Ohio and there's a similar thing with their dogman/werewolf thing that pops up a lot and scattered around near there on it's own or in groups. I saw something in the early 90's that I think was one...that scared the hell out of me
Wow! I was watching your video on the mothman and said something about the Bray Road Beast, thinking that it was too small of a myth for you to have noticed or covered and then my autoplay pitched this one to me. I honestly believed that the legend of the beast was more or less the first in our Midwest region and that it had something to do with native American effigy mounds in our area. It seems more like the Michigan dogman predates anything I can prove in my area which is depressing because "Michigan dogman" isn't as cool of a name but it is cool that you covered the lore of dog/wolf men in the Midwest in general. Keep up the awesome work and I hope you and Aiden behind the camera had a great Christmas and have yourselves a happy new year!
I’m from Michigan and definitely know about the Dogman. We had legends of werewolves around highland MI growing up. We didn’t cal then dogmen necessarily. I always liked to be one to the idea. Then last winter, my boyfriend and I were driving to pick up some take out food. And on our way a GIANT WOLF-LIKE CREATURE ran across the road. It was so black the light was almost absorbed by its fur- but it was also silvery. You could see the glow of its eyes in the headlights and they were yellow- big. It was moving at supernatural speed- it was across the road so fast- it wasn’t natural. It was so big. We don’t know what it was.
Michigan born and raised and I used to drive through the swamps in Wexford County on my commute to and from work and it's definitely the kind of place a dog-man would live. Whether you believe in it or not, the woods in Michigan, Northern MI especially, really do command respect.
Also I remember hearing the onstar call as a kid and it scared me so bad. Like two days after hearing it, we were driving home at night and my dad hit the brakes on the road and said to my mom "looked like a dog running across the road" and my siblings and I all proceeded to lose our minds 😆
The swamps especially! I got lost in them in a small patch of a about 10 acres I know very well just down the road from my house here in Northern Michigan. I was next to the river, had a clear path to cross to lead back north after wandering south plus the two track but somehow I ended up on the other side of the path and never crossed it or the road! Idk how that was possible... I was lost for hours but it was a beautiful summer day.
"Berzerkers," or more properly "bearsarkir," if you will, is more likely to refer to those who wear "bear shirts," or bear pelts into battle, claiming invincibility through animal-totem magic (think a benevolent skinwalker). But yes, they were known to use wolf pelts on occasion, too.
Its worth noting that werewolf horror movies are a thing during the 1950's and 60's, so there's the possibility of some inspiration for the dogmen idea from there. Although even then there still may be a connection, because if the Adlet are related to the Norse "Bear-shirts"/Berserkers, and the Berserkers had influence on werewolf legend you could be looking at an interesting divergence and then reconvergence of lore. That it would then tie into other animism lores is probably more coincidental (animal transformation being a universally human consideration) but it remains interesting.
There have been Bigfoot sightings in the same areas, so got me thinking that maybe people seen something hairy and their minds go to what ever monster they might have in mind
Ive actually seen one, it walked in front of my grandparents car on our way back from town. We lived deep in the back woods of Texas.... it walked out on all fours and stood up on two legs towering over our car and growled...luckily my grandfather hit the breaks because this thing could have ripped the car apart....i was told to never discuss it for obvious reasons. I now live in the city and ex military and you couldn't pay me enough to live in the woods again but if you do stay armed but for most part i believe they leave us alone
Have you heard of the attack by dogmen that ended in an entire family being slaughtered? It was in the "land between lakes" sometime in the 80s. Originally, I thought it was a creepypasta as it was so violent and gruesome, but found a TH-cam video - th-cam.com/video/0swWLqexkvs/w-d-xo.html - where the hosts interview a guy who claims to have witnessed the attack as a child of around 13, if I remember correctly. Obviously, I know this could be a hoax, but give it a listen. The guy seems to be genuine, despite how insane his story is. If he is lying he is doing an incredible job. Or he could just be a bored old guy who is a little crazy - but I don't think so.
I have recently found your channel. I was working with another youtuber for content and wanted to chime in with a few bones I found while researching this subject. Ctesias and Herodotus in the 5th century gave us accounts. Albeit, a short mention by Herodotus about them living in the mountainous region of Lybia. Also Claudius Alianus in the 2nd century gave us an account. Ctesias ~ India Fragment: "On these mountains there live men with the head of a dog, whose clothing is the skin of wild beasts. They speak no language, but bark like dogs, and in this manner make themselves understood by each other. Their teeth are larger than those of dogs, their nails like those of these animals, but longer and rounder. They inhabit the mountains as for as the river Indos. Their complexion is swarthy....." "....They live on raw meat and number about 120,000." "...All, both men and women have tails above their hips, like dogs, but longer and more hairy. They are just, and live longer than any other man, 170, sometimes 200 years." Aelianus ~ On Animals "...Kynoprosopio along the roads to Ethiopia. It seems that these creatures live by hunting gazelles and antelopes; further, they are black in appearance and they have the head and teeth of a dog...." "...Beneath their chin hangs down a beard; we may compare it with the beards of Drakones, and strong and very sharp nails cover their hands. Their whole body is covered with hair; another respect in which they resemble dogs. They are very swift on foot and know the regions that are inaccessible: that is why they appear so hard to capture." Also, consider rabies as a disease that may affect this creature and cause it, much like a wolf, to leave the pack and travel great distances. This disease is the cause for most wolf attacks on humans.
I'm not sure if there was an episode on this yet but the viral video of the girl who climbed an Aztec temple (Quetzalcoatl). Apparently, she had changed her body movements to be very snake-like. I think that would be extremely interesting. Haven't done much research into it myself.
In a book from 1658 called Natural magick by John Baptista Porta, he writes about dog men in India. I am pretty sure I’ve read about dog men in india elsewhere too.
When I was looking up what happened to the natives of Michigan I came upon a legend written by one of the last original Michigan natives. He wrote (it was from a book) that long ago there was a tribe that lived on Mackinaw Island I believe it was. They were often raided in the winter by tribes from the Canada region when there was enough ice to cross. One winter this tribe came and killed every one of those rival tribe members but one couple who got away. They managed their way to mainland lower Michigan. There they hid and never interacted with other humans again. Supposedly, according to the story, their angry spirits and their children became the dogmen. Or some version of that anyway, it was a different name in the native language of course. Very interesting.
I remember being on a trip (I think we were going to Kansas city Mo) it was after midnight and whatever radio station was reciting accounts of werewolf encounters
Dogman, or dogmen, or dog headed men, has been a thing since at least medieval times. For someone who I assume knows a thing or two about Irish lore, I am surprised you didn't bring up the story of the field of slaughter in Ireland, or of medieval clery discussing whether dog headed men had souls capable of salvation, whether it was worth attempting to convert them.
The origins of these wulvers are ancient. I am a Michigan person and in Arenac county they call them witchy wolves. The names are different in every region and country, I have had 3 experiences.
In high school my friend and I stumbled across the Dogman song totally randomly, and it became a legendary meme among our friend group. Laughed my ass of when I saw this vid appear in my feed.
The Michigan Dogman ain't got nothin on the Minotaur of Minnesota. 7 feet tall with the body of a man and the head and antlers of a moose, he carries around a hefty wood axe and murders people out in the wilderness. He roams across the state but generally sticks to wooded, marshy areas. He's totally real. I swear.
Kind of surprised that cynocephaly didn’t come up, I’ve heard that those specific dog men were at one point considered to be real and the main question was whether or not they could be converted to Christianity.
You need to go way back in History to find where these Dogmen started popping up. You can start with the 1500's in Europe & if you look hard enough you'll see how far they spread ! & this isn't folklore ,it's documented & that's the creepy part.
I do enjoy folklore and thanks for the origin of the "dogman". Do you think the dogman, werewolf, and skin walkers cross paths? How can they not know one other? I bet they all howl at the moon (wolf, wolf).
The Dogman IS real! So is bigfoot. I had an encounter a few years back while up north at our camper which is located at the very tip of the thumb of Michigan along the water. My dog sensed it first and began barking, snarling, snorting, drooling & biting at the side window. I never seen him act like that before. Now, it happened so fast and i got the heck out of there and being its so dark out i couldn't see exactly what it was. So I don't know if it was bigfoot or a dogman or anything else for that matter. It happened at night time I had to pull over to the side of the road for a second. The woods are on both sides of the road and I'm parked on the shoulder with the treeline only a couple feet away from the passenger side of my truck and so it was right there. At night it's so dark up there you can't see anything unless you have some kind of light on (headlights or flashlight) I had my headlights on but my dog spotted it on the passenger side towards the rear cab of truck. No it wasn't a deer or turkey or anything because we have the same wildlife at my house and he sees it often and he doesn't bark or act like that. Plus it had to be something tall enough cause we were in a lifted truck. There are no houses in this area. It's all woods on both sides for a couple miles. Lastly, one weekend when my husband was up at the camper by himself, he told me that he felt like he was being watched by something coming from the woods area. He's not one to get spooked easily but this time he felt uneasy so it was time for him to go inside. This happened in early October and the place we have our camper at was about to close for the year and so there wasn't hardly anyone up there at that time. Other residents had told us they heard about it and a couple seen it. OH and I forgot...... Yes! I'm a Michigander. Lived here all my life ...and NO Michigan doesn't suck lol. Actually the upper peninsula has all the gorgeous views. I love going up to the U.P to pictured rock...look it up. It's so beautiful. Just be aware of your surroundings at all times and bring something for protection like stun gun or mace or knife or gun. You never know nowadays what's going to pop out at you. Stay safe. Take care & God Bless
That picture in the thumbnail comes from a guy in Australia I circled the pic from his video also i definitely believe it’s a species of walking wolves and nothing magical! That picture you showed is not what you said it was it’s my picture I screenshotted from his video it is not from anyone in America
Hey guys 😊 Just wondering if anyone has a link to the dogman photo that was shown in the video? I couldn't really make it out on TV. Thank you! 🤗 Lindsay x
Ok hear me out, so what if, the werewolf (Lupus Garou / Man wolf) from the old kingdoms were actually dogmans, who came along with the settlers to America. Could also explain the old tales of Dog people inhabiting wild lands and wearing clothes, some of which could also speak human languages.
okay but considering how realistic some fursuits can be, do you think dogman sightings have increased or decreased since furries became more and more common? and would people be more or less likely to see an actual dogman if they exist, but write it off as a furry?
I want to say that the Palmyra incident, I don't believe in the very least. The town of Palmyra is 32 miles to the west of the city of Bangor, the very same city that one of, if not the most prolific horror writers in American history happens to call his home. I'm of course talking about Stephen King and the story of the Palmyra wolves is almost certainly inspired by Stephen King. Bear in mind that there are no established wolf populations anywhere in the state of Maine. That's not to say there aren't remnant populations, but it's highly unlikely that these were wolves , let alone wolfmen.
Hahaha, I moved to Michigan a few years ago. I absolutely agree, Michigan sucks. Also no body is walking around in animals suits in Michigan, I garentee. Thats a good way to get shot. And also so many people have trail cams here so I do find it hard to believe hes never been caught on one clearly
I caught a picture of a shadow entity at the former West Virginia state Penitentiary. Let me know if you'd like for me to send you the pictures and the story behind them
I know you put the red circle around what we're supposed to be looking at but I don't see a dog man at all and I don't know how anybody else can see a dog man looking at that it's a blob

I live in Central Indiana and yeah they are here too. One dogman decided to crash a music festival back in the day. over 75 witnesses too.

You mean upper Wisconsin 😉
Well you do border Lake Superior up there
The northeastern Wisconsin territory

As a Michigander, I can stoutly say: We suck.
But less than at least 12 other states, Ohio & Pennsylvania included.
As someone from around Kalamazoo, MI is great. The roads, however, suck
Michigan is worse than 49 other states.

The Inuit origin story is interesting as well when you consider how many Native American nations also had dog soldiers/warriors or something similar
It’s a pretty big thing with Indo-European cultures as well: th-cam.com/video/zEXXA0naXkk/w-d-xo.html

I know right? The theme keeps repeating itself all around the world, I wrote a whole essay about it

Have you guys heard about the Cinocephali? a lot of tribes and civilizations around the world speak about groups of dog headed men and they kinda match the Dogman in some ways.
Was looking for a comment mentioning that it's in a few native American mythologies
@@ObsidianFallen And there's even a Cinocephali saint
Dogman? Doggy-style? That’s hot. Ruff ruff.
Dogman never seemed as creepy or intimidating to me as werewolf. He's probably a good boi
You're not very bright, are you?
So long as they've got a chew stick and a ball they'll be putty in one's hands

Found you through Wendigoon. Currently binge watching your vids. I'm from Morgantown, WV so that was cool to hear that you're from PA.
Ah Motown. Where the most exciting things are tailgating Mountaineer games and going to Pittsburgh, haha.
This is the only video I have ever seen that has made that hair on the back of my neck stand up, I'm 20 years old this spooking me
"Berzerkers," or more properly "bearsarkir," if you will, is more likely to refer to those who wear "bear shirts," or bear pelts into battle, claiming invincibility through animal-totem magic (think a benevolent skinwalker).
But yes, they were known to use wolf pelts on occasion, too.
"benevolent"

Looks pretty light outside for a "night watchman" "on duty" to have taken that picture
I live in central Alabama and have been in the woods and have heard things that chilled me to the core
Honestly though, I don't know why stories about dogmen or werewolves freak me out so much. Wolves of Palmyra, the Dogman, I hate it all.
Best intro ever
Its worth noting that werewolf horror movies are a thing during the 1950's and 60's, so there's the possibility of some inspiration for the dogmen idea from there. Although even then there still may be a connection, because if the Adlet are related to the Norse "Bear-shirts"/Berserkers, and the Berserkers had influence on werewolf legend you could be looking at an interesting divergence and then reconvergence of lore. That it would then tie into other animism lores is probably more coincidental (animal transformation being a universally human consideration) but it remains interesting.
I always find the Dogman super interesting!
Paris Michigan is a small village about 5 miles north of big rapids
"You can claim it's a guy in a suit" That WHAT's a guy in a suit?! I've seen that picture a hundred times and there's never been anyone in it!
They are just, and live longer than any other man, 170, sometimes 200 years."
Aelianus ~ On Animals "...Kynoprosopio along the roads to Ethiopia. They are very swift on foot and know the regions that are inaccessible: that is why they appear so hard to capture."
Also, consider rabies as a disease that may affect this creature and cause it, much like a wolf, to leave the pack and travel great distances. This disease is the cause for most wolf attacks on humans.
5:05 this couldn't have been a picture taken at night lmao
It would be highly likely that the Dogmen occupy most of the Great Lakes region and adjacent forested territories.
"It's 8:04pm, and Michigan still sucks." - God-level

Probably Coast to Coast AM
Dogman, or dogmen, or dog headed men, has been a thing since at least medieval times. For someone who I assume knows a thing or two about Irish lore, I am surprised you didn't bring up the story of the field of slaughter in Ireland, or of medieval clery discussing whether dog headed men had souls capable of salvation, whether it was worth attempting to convert them.
can you do a video on the hide behind?
I swear.
Nonononono I’m going to vomit and cry. The Michigan Dogman fucking terrifies me.
Kind of surprised that cynocephaly didn’t come up, I’ve heard that those specific dog men were at one point considered to be real and the main question was whether or not they could be converted to Christianity.
Pretty sure the dogmen are remant cynocephali /cynocephilum who were once known as the dog headed men in medieval times and prior.
You need to go way back in History to find where these Dogmen started popping up. You can start with the 1500's in Europe & if you look hard enough you'll see how far they spread ! & this isn't folklore ,it's documented & that's the creepy part.

There was contact off and on for far longer than modern society accepts.

I do enjoy folklore and thanks for the origin of the "dogman". Do you think the dogman, werewolf, and skin walkers cross paths? How can they not know one other? I bet they all howl at the moon (wolf, wolf).
I'm from eau Claire and I've never heard of the dog man until you brought it up lmao
Im from eagle river and I’ve heard about dogman a handful of times, never had a close connection with someone who’s seen it though.

The Dogman is Real. I know what I saw. In broad daylight. 4 weeks ago. There where 2 of them. 8 1/2 foot tall on 2 legs. I will never forget it.
Dogman is real. I watched 2 of them for almost half an hour with binos... scary af
okay but considering how realistic some fursuits can be, do you think dogman sightings have increased or decreased since furries became more and more common? and would people be more or less likely to see an actual dogman if they exist, but write it off as a furry?
Do an in depth out of depth video on the Cynocephaly and do it hard.

if you drive down bray road there's a cool statue of the beast
I don't like talking about it but I did see one...call me crazy but it looked real to me...

I'm in Michigan and holy shit, living in the forest is fucking terrifying ☹
Possibly just black bears, they have doglike faces and can walk on 2 legs
All I see in that dogman image is a bear.
It's just a big ole raccoon
I've never had hallucinations on alcohol.
I don't know anyone that has
Dogmen are usually found around native American burial sites.
It could just be black bear sightings they walk on hind legs
I'm sure a LOT of these sightings are that.
To someone that has never seen a bear Maybe.. I've seen several and there's no mistaking them for some other creature
I'm a 47 year old man who was born raised and live in Maine and strangley enough have never met anyone else who heard of the Palmyra wolves. Kinda sux
Put some respek on the Defiance Werewolf
What about the medieval paintings of dogheaded men? May there have been actual dogmen, later exterminated due to looking different.
