Reading is looking and parsing. You have to visually scan each word, but you can parse in many ways (whole sentences, paragraphs). To read fast you have to improve the visual scanning step, and do better parsing. To do better parsing you have to increase your working memory, your context vocabulary (some prior knowledge in the domain you are reading always helps). So you scan a portion of text that you keep in memory, then parse it for meaning, then move to the next portion. That will improve reading speed. Slow readers usually tend to parse after every word and waste time readjusting the meaning all the time. Scan in big chunks and parse.

I agree and helped in college save time for athletics. The most important thing missing here and in most "speed reading" tutorials (I have had 2 back in my college and post college years) was the importance of a strong vocabulary. The flow of a text is almost anticipatory in some context and pleasure reading of dialogs and settings. Great video post otherwise!

My experience has been that it is quite possible to read faster but at a certain point, comprehension goes down. Some types of reading require slow focus. An example of this would be trying to reading long complex passages written in the 18th century. For me to read a Steven King novel is much faster and easier than say, reading a physics text book. That said, what Mr. Atthreya say is true. I worked on my eye movement and speed a few years ago and it probably increased my speed by 50%. Thank you from the Maritimes Canada. great video.

meaning is not in the word, meaning is in the thought. the word is just the vehicle in the impartation of your thought to some one else~ me
speed reading is not for creatives who will try to make the words into dialog of some drama to give it a memorable context and meaning. speed reading lacks context like going from point a to point z but not knowing the reason, the difficulty and what transpired during the journey of how one got to the other. bilbo baggins found a magical ring, frodo baggins threw the magical ring into the volcano of mordor. and now you have just speed read the entire lord of the rings and fellowship of the rings in a single sentence, how fast was that!
