  • In this video, I go through my planned improvements for the Albright area on the layout, where I will model a transload area, relocate the tracks, and also relocate the historic depot.

Eric.. I'm very interested in this new series that you've introduced today. I especially like the way you explained your thought process and the reasons for making these changes. I've realized your track plan woes while coming up with the track plan on my current build. I knew the space I had to work with. I came up with a track plan. I began and once I saw it down I didn't care for the flow.. so I ended up changing it four times total before I settled. Now, like you I have a basic idea of what industries I want and where I want them..but, I have no idea of how large they will be to look the part when finished. So, I'm interested to see how you go about changing your current plan to a more suitable layout to meet your needs. Thanks for sharing this project.

Thanks for the note, that's good to know there are other folks out there who have similar changes after building! Stay tuned...

I think that will be great.. I live across the river in CB but never spent much time in that area. Looking forward to it. I just got my first section of bench work completed so will be working on the first sections of track soon! Hope to have update 2 up this weekend.

I like the new layout plan for this part of the layout. I am wondering though if you can link up the Millard Refrigeration warehouse from the other end - the South Omaha Yard end. It seems a waste not to use this industry and keep it rail served. Not sure if the track arrangement at the South Omaha Yard end will work but worth investigating. Look forward to more updates.

Thanks! I have thought about adding a connection on the other end, it's worth thinking through. Although I do like the idea of keeping an abandoned spur here. Definitely something to consider though! I'll keep you posted on what ends up happening.

Interesting video. Moving the main line seems like a good idea! Are the buildings on layout itself model after a real area or freelanced? Here in Elk Grove and Bensenville IL there's industrial areas that were/are rail served. A lot of tracks are still in place, buildings still rail served, but a lot of track used for storage. Loads of ideas for a railroad in these areas. The cold storage building, Could that track come from the yard to the left and stop at the right end of the building? The abandon spur for the plumbing supply could be just above the main line or through the middle of the yard.. The rest of the ideas sound good. Cant wait to see the progress!

Thanks! The buildings are more or less based on real customers in the South Omaha area. I certainly thought about changing the access to the track to the other side. It's always good to fully flesh out ideas before cutting up the track. I'll keep you posted on what I decide to do!

So I haven’t lost it for wanting to do something similar...haven’t pull the trigger yet but considering it...your track gang is about to get real busy

Yep, the track gang is back at it again! Also good to see I'm not alone with this!

The HO people are not going to like seeing the cold storage warehouse closing, all those jobs being lost . I just came to the same thing on my layout.

Well, there will still be a productive business here with employees, just no rail service, unfortunately...

Every layout I’ve built (I’m on my fourth, a larger prototype Austin bergstrom spur industrial and is modular because I rent and will have to move it in a year, and my fifth is a shelf switch puzzle style) when I finally purchase a home I’ll be looking more and more towards building a permanent dual or tri level shelf style layout. Your design is very similar in operations as mine I appreciate your consistent updates and wish I lived near so I could operate with you!
