      I agree...I'm not a fan of the trend toward "futuristic" spaceship like design companies feel they need for EVs. I appreciate the more classic BMW interior styling. Then again, I like the vehicle to have a CD player so...I'm a dinosaur customer.

      A big reason for my purchase. Switching from my 3 series coupe to the iX3 will take almost no adaptation. Everything is in the same place and controls the same way, gives tactile feedback and can be set without taking the eyes off the road. And it still offers gesture and voice control. That's just so much more comfortable and safe than navigating a touchscreen while driving.

    Agree with most of what you said. I test drove a few mid-sized SUVs over the past few weeks, and just ordered the iX3. Did not expect that before I drove all my test objects, but the iX3 was the only one that had comfort, a sporty feel, and-most of all-great efficiency. And it was also more affordable as some of the competitors.

Nice car, but expensive, coupled to a poor public charging infrastructure. Great as a second car for the well off with home charging, provided the ride isn't too hard - the X3 xDrive30e xLine with 19 inch wheels we drove recently had a very firm ride driving around our city with its torn up, pot-holed roads... Many thanks Thomas and Team. Best wishes.

    I hate the fake motor noise, and would totally turn it off: I love how quiet my i3 is. I really hope we see the iX3 or something like it in the US. Midsize or small electric crossovers are so much better for living in a city, and the typical American tank of an SUV (and the fact its often the only real option because automakers insist it's all we want) is just so frustrating to deal with.

      @@Vonliten If they went all in 8 years ago, they would have been bankrupt. They need the money for R&D and for the production lines, in order to make that money they have to sell ICE cars.
      Tesla operated for years without profit because investors kept pouring money into the company, while all other manufacturers have to earn their own money, and they do that by selling cars. Considering that the EV vehicles only account for around 3% of the market, going all in on electric would have been suicide for most manufacturers.

      because they do not make profit with the i3 because it is full of expensive composite materials. the management thinks because it is electric. they don't know anything. but they will see profits on their ICE cars going down soon as well and then they will suffer big time. the old lady who owns a lot of BMW will probably not care very much after being a couple of hundred years old already. it is probably a tough race who dies first. the lady or BMW. meanwhile the engineers face a much more serious problem. for the new car generation they have to figure out how to make kidney grills with the size of at least 6 square meters. even for good german engineers that seems to be a hard one to crack.

    Hey Thomas, I might have missed but the infrared illumination above the digital cockpit display seems a rather novel addition. It is most likely for drowsiness detection or face direction tracking but I couldn't catch if you said anything about it. Not sure if I had ever seen these in a car before. (Visible at 15:23 onwards)

    • @antn537
      @antn537 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @TillOverHill all the BMWs with the 'Live Cockpit' digital dials have that infrared tracking, as far as I'm aware its used for eye tracking to adjust the graphics. If you check out some of the other BMW reviews on this and other channels you'll see the camera picking it up - I've even seen it captured in pictures on the BMW Approved Used car finder!

    • @TillOverHill
      @TillOverHill 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@antn537 Oh, thank you for the reply! I hadn't seen this before, so it is common on BMWs of this live cockpit spec.
      Interesting if it is used for eye tracking, as I can see near no use for it other than drowsiness detection (blink rate, eyes closed duration, and reopening times are often utilized for this measure).
      You have a person with non-restrained head, and without any eye tracking calibration for the individual, then it is also likely they'll be driving in sunlight, say half of the time they drive. The best they can achieve in this setting would be to track for eye and/or face direction, other than drowsiness detection obviously. And even for any of these a month long development would be sufficient for a computer vision model (say, an OpenCV model or alike); whilst an array of infrared LEDs seems rather overkill without further information.
      Anyway, I'd have loved an interview with somebody from BMW on this subject; I can put together a list of questions quickly for you if you want @Autogefühl. It would be a nice elucidation of something many car enthusiasts do not talk about; human-machine interaction. My research focus is interaction, neuroergonomics, operator performance, and human factors; so this is what I do for a living, just not in cars.

      @@TillOverHill My pleasure, after all isn't this what 'social media' is supposed to be about, rather than people virtually screaming at each other!! I was also interested to learn of the context in which you asked the question.
      Further to my reference to eye tracking, as I mentioned my understanding it mostly to do with presentational aspects of the graphics (I suspect brightness is controlled elsewhere, both crudely with the state of the headlamps, but also similar to how they use solar/light sensors to preemptively vary output from the HVAC system in combination with temperature). There is another aspect to these type of sensors illustrated in Thomas' review of the new MB S-Class, where that has a switchable 3D rendering mode, so the eye sensor is used to provision more accurate representation of the depth/Z-plane.
      Having said that I'm no expert in this area and merely a car enthusiast with some interest (professional and otherwise) in technology, so I'd say your effort to discuss with someone in BMW responsible for these systems is definitely the way forward. All the best with your research

  • @aigarius

    Tomas, one thing you should mention when discussing power economy of EVs is that if you want to get somewhere faster, then you should be driving faster on EV as well. Increased consumption will get compensated very fast during charging (basically for anything above 50-60kW charging speed). In a minute of charging you can get in enough power for many minutes of driving, so there is no point in driving slower to "save power" if you care about time.
    Also it would be great if you could show the charging curve in your videos as well - on Ionity, from 5% to at least 80% and give people recommendation on when to stop charging and move on during long trips. Too many people do it wrong by driving their EV slowly and then charging to 100% thus wasting their time and money. In extreme cases this can cause people to spend *twice* the time charging as if they were driving fast and charging only up to 70-80% and only on fast chargers (150kW+).

    This is such a cool video & sav! I have owned several X5 & currently I own a plug-in five series now and it is phenomenal car so I’m extremely disappointed to see that BMW North America has chosen not to bring his car to United States however it will force me to have to leave the brand to perhaps purchase a Ford MachE. I’m not sure Who is responsible for the marketing or the evaluation as to what American markets want I think Americans are prone to purchase what you market to them I hate that the Germans automatically assume there’s certain models we don’t want they need to push harder to bring their products to the US market!

    • @outdoorolli5754

      Sorry for disappointing you. In fact, it was the US-dealership of BMW, that demanded manufacturing in the US or Germany, 4-wheel-drive and a range of 300 miles minimum to make the iX3 being perceived as a premium-offer in the US-market. What will come to the US in 2021 are the iX4 and the iX.

      @@outdoorolli5754 thanks for the update. It amazes me how out of touch most dealers are as i see evidence of how they spec their inventory. Perhaps BMW will cultivate a new strategy as they move in to the EV market. I’ve notice most dealers have no pride in selling/marketing any of the electrified models except i8 and that was only because of price point. If they’re not careful the Koreans are going to catch them in this segment

    It was not really clear in what you said, but if one configures BMW X3 30i with all the same options as BMW iX3 comes as standard, then iX3 in Germany comes out as 2k€ *cheaper* than the ICE version. And that is *before* incentives. IMHO this is insanely good value proposition if you are in that market segment looking for a car - private or company car.
