I'll explain why I personally unsubscribed and gave up on the Gempire. But first, let me say that I wish you the best. Based on your persona, I think you are probably a genuine person. I used to rock with Gem and the gang heavily. The channel used to emanate palpable enthusiasm surrounding the hobbies, all from a relatable personality. Early Gem was someone I could vibe with-a slightly ratchet dude, probably older than he looks, who just likes cool stuff. I connected with that. I would watch statue videos at work on the sneak, trying to come up on a Thanos on throne. I legitimately wondered how this dude was hustling up all this cool product. Statues weren't my world, but you made them approachable.
But man, the weekly comic reviews were it. Easy, relatable reviews-not overthought or overly clever. So many reviewers are bitter, overstimulated, and jaded, taking things way too seriously. It was like kicking it with a homie you didn't know messed with comics. Like how strangers in Jeeps wave at each other over shared interest. Fast forward to the ComicTom and Whatnot shine, con controversies-all of it. Everything just kind of went lame duck. The content had a tonal shift towards something more akin to another hand reaching for my pockets.
I will never knock a man for hustling. Get your money. But you guys genuinely messed the game up with Whatnot and CGC. Sure, it would have all happened anyway most likely, but it’s all sketchy, and you guys were the faces of that shift. Fairly or not, that’s your legacy right now. It seemed like everyone was clout-chasing, gassing each other up, trying to be celebrities within a niche hobby while simultaneously turning their backs on it. No reviews, no engagement.
Hell, Tom bought some stuff off me on eBay, made two videos about it, and couldn’t even tag my accounts. Which is okay, but it's not relatable to me. My time is precious, and I'm sure many people feel that way. Unfortunately, I think you were simply used up by bigger players as you took it for granted. Meanwhile people like myself walked away to our regular lives. I wish you all the best, and if you’re going to make content, I hope you find your passion. Best of luck, broski.

Same. I can’t stand Comic Tom he gives off snake oil salesman vibes. I was out after the C2E2 nonsense. I didn’t feel like I was watching someone be passionate about the same hobbies as me, it felt like I was sitting through a timeshare presentation

There is nothing wrong with having a full time regular stable job. Social media has pushed this narrative of starting your own business and becoming a millionaire with millions of followers. But it takes a lot of hard work , sometime you fail sometimes you win , or if you are lucky , you are born into wealth. Like I said nothing shameful with having a steady source of income with health insurance and benefits from a job, and then doing TH-cam on the side .

Growing up, I lived in a large house designed and built by my dad. After he passed away, my mom struggled with the upkeep of such a big place. The house required constant cleaning and repairs, and she started buying unnecessary items to fill the empty spaces left by my siblings moving out. When I moved to Tokyo, I chose a smaller place. From my experience, I realized that larger spaces tend to encourage accumulating things you don't really need.

Your reviews of Berserk statues and manga really made me a fan, I got back to reading it and now it's my number 1 manga of all time. I miss those reviews of new omnis and hauls. I saw this same thing happen with my parents, albeit without the comics and TH-cam aspects. They were in a great financial situation with both incomes, almost paid off their house which was more than big enough for the two of them and my sister. Then mum got the great idea to sell that one and scale up unnecessarily. They didn’t use the extra space she claimed she needed when they built it, dad lost his job right before Covid, and then they were doing it tough. Had to sell a bunch of stuff and cut back on luxuries, couldn’t do much fun stuff, etc. If they had’ve stayed and paid off their first house, my dad losing his job when he did would’ve made zero impact.
I learned from their mistake and will never sacrifice financial security and the comfort that brings for anything.
Really respect you for keeping it real and making the right choice here 👌🏻

I paused the video to get my thoughts in order. I've been supportive for years, Gem, you know that. I'm going to keep it 100.
WhatNot caused the channel to suffer. This is not a reflection of you, just a fact. I've seen the same thing happen to other channels that pushed WN.
A part of me thought you were burned out on YT. Yet I still look forward to your videos on a weekly basis.
You need to go back to the basics, do what you did to get you here. Regularly scheduled content based on YOUR interests. We all share your interests, that's why we're here. We know you have to eat, and I respect it, but the reason we all show up is for you, dude.
Two biggest things that can cause a business to fail, start up, and expansion. I don't think you intended to start as a business, but expansion takes more work than starting up and in this case, more regularly scheduled content would greatly help, not just sponsors.
We have all the love in the world for you dude, keep it simple.

I have dropped off on the videos since the move, you highlighted it how you weren't feeling it like you used too. Full faith you find the passion again and share it with us in your videos. Not saying you need to repeat the past but just enjoying what you are sharing with us will come through on its own. Looking forward to future videos. Hope everything works out financially for you. Not 100% sure if it's an option for you but you could do a HELOC on the house or your paid off house if you still own it. Now I’ve sold a bunch of my collection and I will be honest. I fucking resent a lot of collectibles lately because I got careless and now I’m getting back to grassroots and making smarter money decisions. I remember screaming “DONT DO IT!” at my phone when you first made the video announcing that you were going to quit your job and move to a bigger house, but you are 100% correct. People make mistakes and learn from them which is a great thing and luckily the things you’ve spent money on are worth something and not like drugs, drinking, or gambling so there is options for turnaround.
Only suggestion I would make to you if later on you bounce back and want to upsize your house would be to live in your smaller house and “act” like your bills are higher and set all of that aside so when/if you move again you can just pay that house off entirely.

I've watched a lot of channels, and I've never taken joy in down times for creators. I hope it goes better for you. You guys aren't doing nothing, and it takes more time and $ than probably anybody realizes. Moderation is the key to life, or at least balance. Sometimes, it just takes a realignment, and you might end up even better off than before. If it's right, it's right for you. F what anybody else thinks.
