Cool one! A couple of remarks - This line is kinda special. I don't really know how iryo has managed to run trains on this route, in fact, as the line doesn't use ERTMS, but an old niche spanish traffic control system called LZB. This is because the line is the oldest dedicated high-speed line in spain. This also means that max speed is 250km/h, not 300 (although in the neigborhood of Madrid tracks could have been improved, I'm not totally sure) so I don't understand why the train display said 270 (update: I actually checked and vmax is 300km in a tiny tiny section near los yébenes, and vmax in the rest of the track is about 270) - About the 15min stops, I don't think renfe gets more priority. In fact, some levante services are being moved to chamartin station to ease atocha a bit Also, as you are in spain. The new pajares base tunnel, which will connect Leon and Asturias in under an hour, and 18+ years in the making, is to open within a year. And the old pajares ramp railway is scheduled to close when that happens. It is a most scenic journey which people have compared to the gottard pass, but it is going to close due to high maintenance costs (an unthinkably poor decision if you ask me). This route is also served by one of the most traditional and trustworthy trains that have ever run in spain, renfe series 440, which are also to be swapped by new sets. Maybe you wold be interested in doing this route, as it will be impossible to do in a relatively short time.

Madrid - Puerta de Atocha is now called Madrid - Puerta de Atocha - Almudena Grandes, named after a famous Spanish writer, died in late 2021. Spanish Public TV (TVE) will remember her with an adaption of one of its novels to a TV series called "Los Pacientes del Doctor García"

La manía de los políticos de querer cambiar los nombres de las calles, aeropuertos, estaciones de tren etc. solo es por conveniencias políticas y no por que el pueblo,el verdadero pueblo, tenga necesidad de cambiar nada.
Look forward to riding on an Iryo train. Have ridden Ouigo and Ave multiple times. Also can’t wait for the Barajas/Atocha line to be built. Transferring from Barajas to Atocha is annoying unless you take a 35 euro cab. Also, the Valencia trains depart from Chamartin

Despite the original dirty windows, it was a great review of the train in Spain! I've never ridden any high-speed train, only the slower trains in Holland and Germany. Here in Florida, USA, we've just started high-speed train service from Miami to Orlando, but it's not as fast as those in Europe. I think the fastest speed is about 135mph.
Nice video. I love European trains so I am glad I found your channel! I have not tried Iryo, but I hope to get back to Spain in a few years and visit Málaga and other parts of the south. I’ll keep the company in mind! Looks like a great value! I’ve only been on Renfe AVE from Madrid to Barcelona back in 16. It was fine but my one experience with an “alternative” competitor was Ítalo in Italy the following year and I found that to be a great experience!

For a departure of 6:55A.M. that has dirty windows, there is NO EXCUSE because it’s probably coming in from the yards where it can pass through a train wash. 🤔. Seat looked comfortable ✅. Ability to pre order meal ✅. Meal looked great (albeit not my choice since I don’t eat seafood) ✅. Fare seemed reasonable ✅. And if the booking site seems complicated, I’d stop in at the ticket office a day or two ahead of my trip if I got frustrated with the booking process. 😉
@@NonstopEurotrip … I book in advance whenever possible but if it becomes complicated and I get frustrated that’s when I head to the ticket office. As far as first class goes, at this stage of life (I’m starting my 7th decade) it’s COMFORT and SERVICE that are the priorities. At least a decade ago I saw a little sign on my Virtuoso Travel Agents desk … “if you don’t fly first class today, your beneficiaries will tomorrow”. 😉👍🏻
You had me at "at seat meal service" to be fair. Is there a water ban preventing the cleaning the train before it enters service for the day? Cordoba is a city on my "to visit" list.. I like Malaga station. Spent a few hours there once after having flown to Malaga waiting for a (non high speed) train to Seville..
Enjoyed that video, thanks for sharing. I’ve travelled with all three companies on the ZGZ-MAD and ZGZ-BCN routes and enjoyed my trip with Iryo. However, I did notice, their trains rocked a lot more than OUIGO. My orange juice just wanted to paint the floor! Renfe’s rock a little but less than Iryo. I’ve read that the lines between ZGZ-BCN are the fault. However, it’s definitely more noticeable on the Iryo train.
When you were boarding the train I saw the front of the train and thought they really needed to run it through a car wash before each trip. Regards Chris from Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺
You know what would be cool ? Measure the level of noise in the train. Find a decibel app on your phone to tell you that. That would be a nice point of comparison for different trainsets.
Wow this is a great video. We had planned this trip I think 2 years ago but it was canceled because of the pandemic 😷. Now after seeing this video I would love to give another try but this time on this great train. Maybe even a stop in Cordoba, who knows. I was once in Seville and took the high speed train to Cordoba and loved it. Thanks for posting mate.
Thank you for sharing. We have done Barcelona to Paris on Renfe and enjoyed it. In July we will be traveling on Iryo found trip from Madrid to Málaga. We will actually be staying in Marbella for 3 weeks. Do you have any tips on transportation from Málaga to marbella? Thank you.
Great trip. Finally another new route of Iryo. Ah unfortunately, same situation like before, lounge isn't open until 9.00 am, Iryo should be updated it on their website. Overall nice journey.
I made this journey last week and I agree that Iryo is an absolutely first class service. Superior to RENFE. I was disappointed in the 'departure lounge ' at Atocha which has hardly any seats for use whilst waiting to board. This tends to drive passengers into the cafés etc where the prices are such that I frankly refused to buy anything.
I don't see how the fare structure is complicated, most travelers know if they are business or second class so here there is one between with a split for each of the 3 fare types. Looks very similar to most airline booking fare structures as they are now
Cordobá is one of my Europe dream destinations that I haven't been to yet. I think this train video would be a convincing factor to finally go visit. Btw, slightly off-topic. Following the full implementation of Brexit, how do British train vloggers like you cope with having to limit yourselves to the "90 within 180 days" rule whenever travelling to mainland Europe?
You should definitely try and go, it's stunning! The 90/180 days is not an issue for me, I'm never in the EU that much anyway, I'm usually in Asia 4/5 months of the year
I do wonder up to what point it's economically beneficial to run them even in Italy. As in, maybe if it were converted to a normal first class coach you'd earn more money with the extra capacity. But who knows.

May I suggest you next time you pass in Spain to try to review the Talgo VII ( It's the Intercity from Valencia to Barcelona don't be confused with the other one that comes from Murcia ) It's Spain rarest train and has a intresting interior ( Really similar to DB Ice trains in my opinion) these Talgo VII are really special because they used to be Night trains.( Right now most of the Talgo VII are being converted to series 107 High Speed train). So it's pretty rare to see that set of Talgo with a proper locomotive.

The last thing transport corporations want is competition , the number of competitors is inversely proportionate to the amount of profit. It's just a matter of time until there's deals done followed by a duopoly with exactly the same fares.
There are measures in place to avoid that, including a competition overwatch body. Italy's Trenitalia and Italo have been at it for quite a while now and it has worked wonders.

Has a lot of things in spain...takes along time coming, due to the local mayors being kept 'happy' for them to approve, to not having enough money for the project ...or the project money 'mysteriously' going 'missing'. An example of this would be to the west of Madrid in a place called 'Caceres'. I remember travelling on from Madrid to Caceres 22 years ago (on a 'choo-choo' train that traveled at walking pace!). Train took 4 hours to arrive!. Outside Caceres station there was a massive roadside billboard boasting about the 'soon' to be high speed train from Caceres to Madrid. Yep!..you guessed it, that railway line and high speed train to date still hasn't materialised. Furthermore, On the forever popular 'tourist rich coastline of the Costa del Sol, 'local' trains only run from Malaga down the coast before they 'run out' of train line at Fuengirola, and there it ends. Now you would have thought that on one of the country's most popular and visited (money rich) coastlines in Europe, that the Costa Del Sol, with all of its foreign and tourist investment that of course they would have extended the lines beyond to like Mijas Costa, Calahonda and Marbella to name just a few (Yes!, no train line or station at Marbella!???!). But no, 60 years on from the mass influx of tourist boom to spain....ain't happened to date!. In one of the most visited country in Europe!. This bad example is either a product of bad planning and lack of responsibility (heads in the sand syndrome!), money 'disappearing' or just the complacency of well "it doesn't matter the tourist and the foreign investors will still continue to visit even if we don't plough the money into the transport infrastructure etc"....!????! In stark contrast you have spanish islands like Majorca and Ibiza who in half this time have invested a high proportion of foreign financial investment and tourist cash back into their islands infrastructure and public resources. Something that mainland spain needs to think about (along with their 'many municipality mayors'). Such a poor opportunity missed by an otherwise beautiful country.

I'm happy there is more competition, last time I was in Spain. I wanted to go from Murcia to Madrid, but even booking more than 1 week prior, the price was ridiculous. I ended up taking a bus with Alsa, which to be fair is great, but I like trains better.
Yeah, unfortunately the routes without competition are still quite overpriced. I've used alsa before too, and they're good!

Well they haven't changed the signs yet 😉
@@NonstopEurotrip Because the only changed sign is at the station's greenhouse that says: "Almudena Grandes"
And it was changed just before you rode on the Iryo train
Hope not.
That's too long. Atocha is and will be Atocha
How was the ride quality and noise level other than passengers talking in the background?
They're excellent tbh
Look forward to riding on an Iryo train. Have ridden Ouigo and Ave multiple times. Also can’t wait for the Barajas/Atocha line to be built. Transferring from Barajas to Atocha is annoying unless you take a 35 euro cab. Also, the Valencia trains depart from Chamartin
You can take a Cercanías train (free if you are taking an AVE) which connect to Chamartin and Atocha in 15-20 minutes. But yeah, taking the HSR to the airport will be a huge step forward.
It's no pain using the metro or cercanías to get from the airport, and it's quite cheap.

Thanks for sharing ☺️

@@NonstopEurotrip … I book in advance whenever possible but if it becomes complicated and I get frustrated that’s when I head to the ticket office.

You know what would be cool ? Measure the level of noise in the train. Find a decibel app on your phone to tell you that. That would be a nice point of comparison for different trainsets.

Did you try the lounge across the road?
@@NonstopEurotrip No because I only arrived at Atocha an hour or so before the departure time.

unbelievable cheap with such a great service! how is it possible.
I don't see how the fare structure is complicated, most travelers know if they are business or second class so here there is one between with a split for each of the 3 fare types. Looks very similar to most airline booking fare structures as they are now
