Don't forget that Yassop spent months if not a whole year in Fusha village, that is a skip and a jump away from Syrup Village, and yet he didn't visit his son.
All this Yassop slander. But you know, I suspect that given 10 to 20 years time, a lot of our straw hats boys would probably find themselves on this list. Luffy doesn't even know what a father looks like. So, if he had a kid, he'd probably just dump he/she with the mother and leave, or drop the kid off at Makino's bar if the mother was dead. Same shit for Zoro. As for Sanji, well we all know how he'll raise his kid (with a foot to the face). Plus, knowing him, he'd probably be unfaithful to his wife. Say less for Ussop, like father like son. He'll leave the child as an infant, and only come back when the child is in their twenties. Ussop probably wouldn't even see anything wrong with that. Franky might be a good dad....but only because Robin would string him by his you know what, if she ever caught even a whiff of that dead beat energy. Brooks doesn't have any equipment, so he's exempt. The only two strawhats that would make good fathers are probably Chopper and Jimbe.

It's honestly rather interesting how Usopp doesn't begrudge his father for leaving him and his mother (who dies while he's out at sea) to be a pirate; in fact, he actually boasts how proud he is to be his son when Klahadore talks smack on him. It's hard to say how much of this is genuine admiration and how much of this is him coping with the loss of his mother and clinging to that false hope that he'll come back someday. I also recall Oda saying that Yasopp got consent from his wife before leaving with Shanks, which to me sounds like Oda trying to make what Yasopp did less of a scummy move. At the very least, I liked that one bit where it looks like the Red Hair Pirates would meet up with Luffy again and Yasopp was freaking out over potentially meeting his son; he knows he's been a crappy father and fears the worst. The day Usopp reunites with Yasopp will be an interesting event, indeed.
Hey, given that he's a pirate, being a deadbeat dad is not the worst thing you can be accused of in that line of work. Not to mention you're already potentially courting trouble having a pirate's kid anyway.
I definitely think Oda didnt want the readers disliking Yasop because of how he left. Especially because of how long ago he wrote syrup village and how much the story has evolved from his initial plan

Very true... I can only think of three named female characters who we know have kids and who appear in the present day timeline: Chiffon, Kokoro, and Big Mum. Gloriosa probably counts as well
I’ve never cared. The fans get tooooo caught up on family ties that don’t impact the story. What does it add to see luffys mom? Other than we see a woman who gave birth to Luffy? What would she offer to the story other than being a token to satiate people’s desires to see his mom?
@@johnnoreau3570 Well, that depends on what the story of Luffy's mother would be, right? What does it add to see Dragon? What does Vinsmoke Judge offer to the story? Does it have any relevance that Yasopp is Usopp's dad? Did Nico Olivia have an impact on the story? Was Bellemere's part of the story relevant? Or that of Doflamingo's father? As long as we don't see the story of Luffy's mother, we can only assume it's not relevant, but that doesn't mean that's the truth. If she appears or is mentioned, she could just as well add something important to the story.
@@johnnoreau3570the point is, we know a ton of dads and almost no moms in One Piece. It's almost like Oda doesn't think mothers are less important than fathers or something.
I really, really hope, Yasopp and Usopp is gonna have an upgrade flashback or something, because before the mother dies, she did say something along the line that do not hate your your father or something ? So maybe she knows what's up, and I hope it will be the case that there are more reason than just simply abandon your family to be a pirate, I mean, in real life, people abandon piracy to have a family, this feel weird.
Maybe he was hoping to find a cure and was to ashamed to go back or he just doesn't know or care anyway, it is going to be a funny conversation with ussop
In one piece blood relation does not (always) equal family. roger was shanks and buggy's father and he was a great one. Ace is the son of WB bonney is kuma's daughter nami and nojiko are the doughters of bell mere etc. The world government refers only to blood relation while the story doesn't. I think it's significant when you rank fathers in One Piece.
Even in the case of the World Government officials children that aren’t biologically related are treated better than children are biologically related for example Koby and Helmeppo are treated better by Garp than people like Sabo, Luffy, Ace, and Dragon meaning that Akainu’s point of view that blood runs thicker than water is completely wrong as shown narratively all throughout the series.
@@RoronoaZoro-ur6hr funny thing about about that saying; it actually has the opposite meaning of what everyone think it does. The full quote is "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb". Do with this information what you will.
There are many great family bonds in One Piece that aren't built by blood, I agree. I don't think that it would make a difference for this ranking though. Roger knew he wouldn't be around to take care of Ace when he was planning to have him.
You forgot to rank Garp lol. I guess not enough is known about how he parented Dragon, but as a grandfather he could be surprisingly abusive and absent. Or maybe it just comes off that way because him and Luffy seem to trigger each other?
Recent revelation hints that maybe he was actually a good parent to Dragon considering he did follow Garp's footsteps and became a Marine before being disillusioned by the government and leaving to become a Revolutionary 25 years before the current timeline.
And he forgot he took care of tama, too. When he found her selling hats, after her parents died. I don't think he liked this character, but everything else was good, lol
I was about to say that, but then I saw your comment. Yeah, Liam's reasons to rate Sukiyaki was way off, as Sukiyaki could do nothing in most situations Liam accused him of being absent. At best, he could be part of the raid, but instead he cared for children like Tama and Toko, so he should be actually rated a good dad.
Most of the dads on this list definitely fall into (and in some cases deserve) that trope of "Shonen Father" common with most protagonists in that they're either absent or abusive. Rarely do we get the 'tried & failed' or 'unexpectedly good'
An honorable mentioned for the tried but failed tier would be Garp. He does care for Ace and Luffy, but he was very hard on both of them (leaving them in the jungle, throwing them into ravines, tying them to helium filled balloons for some reason) and also came and went in their formative years, which contribuited Luffy's abbandonment issues. And then there are his actions at Marineford, which are an whole can if worms of its own. He has made pretty bad choices
Marineford would put him way down the list, and not to mention his almost abusive way of "raising" Ace and Luffy and yeah tossing them to mountain bandits, and Dragon clearly has a lot of daddy issues lol 😂(maybe.... most certainly Garp gave him the same "tough love" parenting)
1:20 I am more surprised that Garling didn't execute Homing for intending to abandon Mariejois in front of his fellow World Nobles, which is a crime to the leader of God's Knights.
@youngnaughtysoul It's... a manga. A Japanese comic/graphic novel kind of thing. Do you really not know? Asking a random comment on a TH-cam video seems like a very interesting choice, lol. There is a necessary visual element, though, so just listening to it may not really work.
I always interpreted Kaido calling Yamato "son" because he wanted a strong, masculine, manly manchild who inherits his will. So he just ended up calling his little girl "son". Which reminds me at the Atlantis Disney movie: "- how did a girl became a chief mechanic of an expedition? - My father wanted two boys, one is a boxer, the other is a mechanic. Im here, my sister is preparing for her other champion belt" But Kaido instead of raising a "gorilla/ogre tomboy Princess" he raised his own nemesis ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Having your daughter being targeted by a violent and creepy stalker with the ability to throw everything at her definitely didn't leave him much options.
Most One Piece dads are great! If you know that you can't be a good dad, just stay away. Being a terrible father is way worse than being an absent father.
Absolutely. Children can learn to adjust to their father not being there, especially if they're young enough that they don't know what it was like to be around their father. But a bad father will often impact them negatively for life.
Is it possible kuma made luffy forget about dragon. I remember luffy being surprised when he learned he has a father and in the recent chapter we se kuma pulling up to Luffys Island
In defense of Homing, I genuinely don't think he had any way of knowing what kind of danger he was exposing his family to. Honestly, considering his behavior, I don't think the Celestial Dragons in general have any clue what the average people of the world think of them. Seriously, think about it, how could they find out? They can't ask each other since they all seem to be either uncaring or unaware of this, and when asked what they think commoners think of them, you'll most likely get some variation of two different answers. Either "They're basically animals, I doubt they're capable of thought" or "It's our birthright to rule them. They're surely just as happy to serve us as we are to be served by them". They obviously can't check libraries or newspapers to learn this, because no one would be stupid enough to put anything negative about the Celestial Dragons in print. They can't ask their slaves because the slaves would either lie about what they think out of fear for their lives, or lie in the hopes that the Celestial Dragons would do what Homing did and get themselves killed. Even most high ranked marines like Garp or Akainu would likely never speak the truth of what they think about the Celestial Dragons to their face because even though they're more than capable of taking care of themselves, being honest about it would likely end with them being branded a criminal and forced into a life of piracy just remain free from either prison or slavery. Yeah, Homing made what's probably the worst choice imaginable for his family, but if you really stop to think about it, I really don't believe he had any way of knowing or even suspecting that it was a bad choice. I honestly blame the extreme isolation of the Celestial Dragons, as well as the lack of info on the outside world (likely at least partially due to Imu and the Five Elder Stars) for what happened to the Donquiote family more than Homing himself.
Actually you're right. We had one CD get angry at a weakened slave saying "What would you do if something bad happened to me?" And immediately shot them.
The twist I need: classic father son reunion between Yasopp and Usopp. Smiling, Yasop is confronting his fear of being a father and approaching Usopp for a hug BAAM!!! Kaido referring to Yamato as his son isn't so much him supporting Yamato's "I'm Oden" playacting, but rather was a hold-over from Yamato's original design that Oda awkwardly kept in the story after shifting gears a bit. Yamato and Kaido's relationship was originally supposed to be a reflection/reference to "Oscar Francois de Jarjayes" and her father from "Rose of Versailles. Something Oda started reading around June 10, 2019 (as noted in Weekly Shonen Jump.) Oscar was a girl who was raised as a boy by her father in order for her to take his place as a military commander. Early sketches/designs of Yamato would have the position of "Kaido's male heir" forced on her for similar reasons, much to her annoyance, in which she'd remind Kaido and his crew that she was a woman. (See the original sketches of Yamato for reference and some dialogue.) Oda shifted Yamato's personality in a different direction in the actual manga, but retained the concept that Kaido's plan was to ultimately have Yamato take the male-only position of "Shogun" of the new country he wsa creating to serve as a base from which he could further expand his empire. Hence, declaring she was a boy. Additionally, some readers believe there's an unspoken idea that Kaido also refused to refer to Yamato as his daughter due to him only respecting strength and not wanting to acknowledge his child as the weaker sex.
Don't want to fully excuse Shanks for not thinking that through the thing with Uta very well... but also technically she isn't Shank's daughter as was shown in OP:Red, she was found in a chest like shanks was and the entire crew was then treated like her parents/family so the entire crew might need to be on the crew as well as Shanks for that one.

It happens in Ranma 1/2 too Father treats daughter as son is pretty common in manga Maybe if Kaido would have accepted her for who she was she wouldn't have gone around thinking she was a man her father had killed
@@RandomGuy-qc8ml Only in the sense that he's using Yamato's declaration as a useful element in his plan. Otherwise, he's clearly not a fan of Yamato's "I'm Oden" identity. In case you're also under the false impression of Yamato and her "identity", Yamato isn't trans. She adopted Oden's identity in parallel to her own, and all the labels and roles that came along with it. That included being a "man" and later refering to Momonosuke as "her son". Yamato referring to herself as such, is just an expression of that personality quirk rather than any delusional belief that she's actually male or Momonosuke's father. She's just in "What would Oden do?" mode 24/7. She sees it as a necessary torch that someone must carry in order for Oden's legacy to live on. Oda himself has labeled her as Kaido's daughter, she's marked as female on her official database Vivre card, and in Chapter 1084, Yamato was featured in a "women of One Piece" color spread. Plus, common sense dictates she's clearly female.

I would move Yasopp to the Genuinely Terrible tier: Roger died and left his son with Garp, Dragon left his son with Garp and we know that, from time to time, he kept an eye on Luffy (vs Smoker in Rogue Town). Yasopp just left his son with his dying mother... Also i would move Judge into the Tried & Failed tier: he was a monster to Sanji and did terrible stuff to him, but the relationship with the other sons, Sanji's brothers, is not that bad. He "simply" had a plan for his sons (he tried), succeded with some of them (Sanji's brothers) and failed misarably with Sanji
I'd agree with you for Yasopp, but I disagree for Judge. Judge had a plan, yes - turn his children into emotionless superweapons that faithfully obeyed his every order for slaughter. I think of Sanji's strength and kindness as what could have been for all the children if they hadn't had such a horrible father. Couldn't he have made them stronger without stripping them of humanity? During the tea party assassination, Reiji thinks her brothers & her would be better off dead because of how broken they are, they can't even feel the desire to live because that's just how they were raised. That's some A tier gawd awful parenting.
@@akaneakane1969 from a moral point of view you are right and I absolutely agree with you, but in this case the three brothers don't see their father as a negative figure. We could say the same about the celestial dragon father-son duo: they are absolutely terrible, horrible parenting from the father, but their relationship is good so the father ended up in the Unexpectedly Good tier
I don't believe Judge ever had a desire to raise children. All he wanted were super soldiers. You can't be anything more than a "worst dad" if you don't even view your children as humans in the first place.
I'm genuinely curious as to how Kaido would have raised Yamato if the whole Oden thing never happened. I don't think he'd be a good parent, obviously but I do get the feeling that a large amount of Kaido's treatment of Yamato stems from the specific desire that Yamato held. That is, to be Oden- in every capacity. If I remember correctly Kaido did try in a relatively less murdery and outright soul-crushing fashion to break Yamato of the obsession but when Yamato doubled down Kaido sort of just went 'ok then, you're oden now lol get in the cave.' Or perhaps I'm misremembering the way that all went down... Either way, awful dad but had Yamato not developed the opinions that led to that announcement then I'm curious as to see how they'd have all ended up. Ulti and Page One were sort-of, kind-of if you squint raised by Kaido and they turned out... Eeeeh? They turned out eh. Ulti had a pretty familial opinion of Kaido so it can't have been worse than how he treated Yamato? Maybe?

Let's not forget that Kaido also publicly executed one of his underlings for giving kid Yamato food. I know it wasn't technically in the manga and only in the anime, but that was something that Oda wanted to put into the story but didn't have room to.
In Sukiyaki's defense, he was imprisoned and didn't escape until after Oden was long dead. He thought he lost everything but didn't give in. And he revealed himself to his grandchildren even though he felt so much shame for failing so hard
I like the video. My only issue is that the teir list labels basically make it obvious where someone's going, so I think a more vague or traditional S to F list would be more intresting, but still fine for a video
I feel like Whitebeard belongs on this list, he claims to have so many children that he loves but was filling to risk everyone knowing many would die just to save 1 of his kids, basically willing to trade maybe a couple hundred to a couple thousand for 1, and this single action caused himself and hundreds of his kids to die, along with the one he was trying to save, and later it caused many more of his kids to die all just because he tried to save 1
Whitebeard has only 1 rule on his ships: don't kill a fellow crew member. Presumably, if they weren't willing to go to war for Ace, they could happily sit it out. Everything we see indicates he only takes fairly strong pirates into his family anyway. He also freed his allies from Aokiji's ice and told them that they are free to leave if they want. Most likely they all just wanted to save Ace that much.
Latest chapter shows dragon despite being absent he is there observing Luffy from the distance. Not just far away he even observed Luffy close. He should be a rank "Absent but also present" tier.
Ngl, a little sad you didn't add Corazon to this list for Tried & Failed, given that he did his best to save Law, but also continuously retraumatized him. And for the fact that he would also be a third dad that Doffy killed.

Better to be a dad than a mom in this series honestly because either oda kills you or just doesnt deem you worthy enough to even make/ mention.
Very true... I can only think of three named female characters who we know have kids and who appear in the present day timeline: Chiffon, Kokoro, and Big Mum. Gloriosa probably counts as well
I make One Piece videos

@@nathansquared2685 , thanks for the full saying since I’ve never heard anyone say the full saying in full context before until you said it.
There are many great family bonds in One Piece that aren't built by blood, I agree. I don't think that it would make a difference for this ranking though. Roger knew he wouldn't be around to take care of Ace when he was planning to have him.
Found family trope.
Can't believe Liam forgot Sukiyaki only escaped after Kaido long killed Oden, nevertheless good video.

I'd like to point out that Sukiyaki was imprisoned during the early years of Orochi's reign, and Oden was already dead by the time he escaped.
i was going to point that out as well
I make One Piece videos

I always interpreted Kaido calling Yamato "son" because he wanted a strong, masculine, manly manchild who inherits his will.
So he just ended up calling his little girl "son".
Which reminds me at the Atlantis Disney movie:
"- how did a girl became a chief mechanic of an expedition?

We had one CD get angry at a weakened slave saying "What would you do if something bad happened to me?" And immediately shot them.

kaido torture her her but also support her... well being tortured is what oden do
Kaido referring to Yamato as his son isn't so much him supporting Yamato's "I'm Oden" playacting, but rather was a hold-over from Yamato's original design that Oda awkwardly kept in the story after shifting gears a bit.
Don't want to fully excuse Shanks for not thinking that through the thing with Uta very well... but also technically she isn't Shank's daughter as was shown in OP:Red, she was found in a chest like shanks was and the entire crew was then treated like her parents/family so the entire crew might need to be on the crew as well as Shanks for that one.

or maybe Kaido is just very understanding of Yamato's identity
@@RandomGuy-qc8mlNo, its really just that he Mocks her, and at the same time, thats something that was normal back then, to say your daughter is a Son, with back then, i mean like when Japan was still Closed off and Still had a Shogun. Regular people: Hey, are you one of those people that everyone hates?
Donquixote: Oh my heavens no. I am a celestial dragon
