I'm super glad you are giving this a try. It's made by one dev over many many many years. Edit: the multiplayer is super cool too. There are also factions and ranks for combat. There are on foot mech mission. You also can bring your custom built space stations into multiplayer and build defenses. He recently allowed them to be damaged so people can blow them up. There is also a faction territory system in multiplayer that can do alot. You can also create an AI group based on your rank and give commands. You can even build temporary mining drone bases that will mine for you and you can make a lot just doing that. Lots of really cool features.
This game is amazing, and Im happy that the servers are more active lately and with really fun people to play with. And I'm really happy you doing video about this game. ))
I've been a fan of Evochron since I picked up Mercenaries way back. While graphics may not be AAA level, they're still pretty good, and the gameplay is really, really solid. It's also impressive that it's done by pretty much one guy, and he keeps updating Legacy SE on a regular basis.
There is a free game called Ad Astra that let you fly around and land on planets seamlessly. It was awesome, everything in the game was procedural. The author (Steve Chapman) kind of disappeared a few years ago and I doubt it will ever get updated which is sad but what is there is impressive. He worked on it from the late 90's to around 2012 or so.
Evochron is amazing! I played the heck out of Evochron Mercenary which was released in 2010. Even made a few mods for it. Best Newtonian flight model in a space game, hands down!
It's better than many of the alternatives currently available. Joystick is supported and controls are logical even if there are rather a lot of keys. You actually fly into space stations and even down onto planets (a bit like google earth in a way). On the other hand I am not sure if a sandbox game is ever quite as compelling as a game with a story so maybe it is rather a 'lonely' space experience. But if your main aim is to fly a ship in space it fits the bill. A more 'fun' but less rigorous alternative would be Darkstar one.
I absolutely LOVE this! I've been on a Space kick lately, and I wanted to play a game like Freelancer but on Steam, this looks like the perfect game to do so! All I want to do is fly a ship and complete missions haha
Cool, there are lots of indie space games like these. I've only heard of Evochron vaguely, but nice to have a video to see how it actuall plays! You should also check out Interstellar Rift and Pulsar: Lost Colony. Both great indie space games.
Pulsar is fun, but it's 4 player only and the AI can be super janky, like where they run at you full speed shooting and then highspeed orbit shoot you to death. When you have a good team, it's fantastic and funny! Full on Star Trek away-team, Ensign "Red-shirt" Ricky, vibes! But if your team sucks... or it's a pickup... it's pure frustration. Each of the 4 players have their own part of the ship they're in charge of and that can ruin your experience entirely.
Love this game. I like the relaxing exploration as opposed to the combat which I never got the hang of. Haven't played since they updated the engine. I will have to fire it up again.
It did when Horizons was 1st launched, but it was patched out nearly right away because it was crashing a lot of peoples computers. Astro/Dave probably has some old footage of it.
Starwraith 3d games is very old. And you are right, this game is really underrated. I discovered this license when I was a teenager in the early 2000s. The game system is very rich and complex but the only thing I can say is that the graphics engine is not aging well. I think it's time for them to change it... That said, I didn't think that this studio still existed and continued the "Evochron" games.
If you can get past the graphics which isnt the best "although pesonally I like them" you will find an amazing game, Support the developer and buy the game. You can try out the demo before buying, which more games should have. Let us try them out for a while before buying. The more we support this guy making this game the more time ofcourse he will put on it and make updates. He is proud of his game in which he should be..Awesome video. So well put in only ten minutes. Just by watching your video makes me realise how bad I am at my videos hahaha. Im all over the place when I do videos. Need to have a sheet so I dont talk about everything and anything in no order )). Well at least I know my mistakes so maybe I get better ? Or not. It’s a shame this game didn’t have more fanfare like 5 years ago when it came out. It’s starting to feel more dated now, but at the time it was mindblowing, especially considering one guy makes them. The dev is still patching the game also. You should check out X4 next if you haven’t, it’s a great follow up to X3 and Rebirth, sort of a mix of both.
It doesn't look like something that would blow my mind even 5 years ago. 5 years ago elite literally existed if this blew my mind then elite dangerous would nuke it
Graphically Elite dangerous does look better. But this one developer had already affected with this engine all the things that Elite dangerous fails at now. Exploration, planetary Landings, and in his own way & S RV as well. And a Newtonian physics really rock like no other especially during combat. The game does not hold your hand. However it is totally moddable. What sound effects and graphic improvements being able to download an even more immersive experience. Not to mention voice acting from the crew inside your ship. Elite dangerous has first-person combat while this game does not yet. And even in the vastness of space you can find exoplanets and chart them as well as aliens that will hunt you and enemy faction. All of this was done in the mercenary precursor of this game an added on and elaborated on in this development. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see where these new Developers. Or rather big-time developers stole their inspiration from
There is also Evochron Mercenary by the same dev. Both games are quite entertaining, if a bit dated graphically. Fortunately the gameplay is enough to make you forget the reduced graphics from todays AAA titles. They are also quite reasonably priced. The Dev also is very good at support for those rare occasions that a bug might be found, though pretty much all of them have been found and quashed.
With more polish graphics and interface, 2 difficulty levels (one with some flight assist like in E.D. and the other one without flight assist) this game would be a massive world success!
@@marcchapleau8343 I didn't said that it will disappear soon. It's just going nowhere now. It's "new" call of duty in space just hilarious with nothing new. No way I get Odyssey. In Horizons I got my Elite in exploration and deadly in combat. I got my fully engineered Corvette. That's all. Grind 5 billions to get Carrier?.. No way. Just travel from system to system once a week to land on another planet and run srv to relax.
I playing it right now and it does have toggleable flight assist. When Inertial demper system is on the ship automically compensates flight direction, and when it's off you are in full space newtonian physics.
Evochron is years before Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen were even projects on a drawing board. And the latters "inspired" a lot from Evochron. A truly masterpiece, too bad it hasn't been upgraded to more advanced engine tech.

Elite: Dangerous was inspired mostly from its precursors, and got nothing from Evochron.
I'd buy a secret lab chair, but, I bought a Deadpool gaming chair and don't regret the purchase... one step closer to helping the Deadpools to break the fourth wall. Just a little more and Ryan Reynolds will get his wish...
Thank you very much for your Elite Dangerous design tutorials. It's completely changed how I see the game, and I'm so happy to know that the best Elite Dangerous TH-cam engineer is very appropriately German. Germany can very rightfully be proud of its engineering pedigree.
WOW .... now this is the last thing i expected. Evochron is more of a trad sim experience than slightly "gamey" space games currently prevalent. Forgot to mention its IDIOTICALLY cheap and has robust online MP servers.

@@deltaone246 Personal Opinion here, but there's a lot of decent games out there with bad graphics but I personally didn't spend 2.5K on a computer to play 1990's looking games. I like the graphical style. Feels kind of like a modernised 90s Wing Commander graphical style.
