Marched tuba this show. It was my first and last year, sadly. Still the proudest day of my life.

Alex Brinkley do you have any advice for a DCI rookie tuba player? I'm marching with the Guardians in open class this coming summer

Norma White Congrats, Norma! Best advice is to give your best at everything. Be your best at listening, showering, playing your show, being on time, etc. It doesn't have to be some unattainable thing. Just show up five minutes early or give 10% extra on the next rep. Small incriminates add to huge strides by the end of the summer! Also, fight for positivity. People love to complain in Drum Corps for some reason. Some days will suck, but if you fight for positivity every day, you'll have a more successful and more enjoyable summer.

The standards in dci have been raised so much even a low scoring show these days would have been a record breaking show 30 years ago. But phantom always impresses me every year. Always one of my top 5 cores

Regiment's horn book this year was stunning. The soloists were super human. The entire show was filled with that great full-bodied Regiment voicing that was so classic and that audiences loved.
Now let's get to the real meat of the argument about their deflated scores.
There was no depth of concept here. And that was reflected in the scores. This is a competitive activity with general effect scores. Phantom's show simply could not garner a score higher than a similarly executing corps that contained a theme. In 2016, Phantom presented a concert with movement. But even concerts typically have some reasoning behind the grouping of pieces. Even that thematic thread was missing here.
Which scores higher between two equally delicious cakes at a baking contest? The one with a theme and story behind it, or the one without? Guaranteed in today's era of spin and promotion, the cake with the story wins the baking competition. The story adds depth of flavor to the cake. This show had no reason for not frosting its cake. There's absolutely no reason for these selected concert pieces to lack theme. Here were the scores on the scale of theme/story:
    Theme 0-10 SCORE 0
    Story 0-10 SCORE 0
Progression/Advancement/Heightening 0-10 SCORE 0 (There's no heightening here, no continual increase in stakes.)
Game/Pattern 0-10 SCORE 0 - (There's absolutely no pattern here, except inexplicable posing. No throughline whatsoever.)
    Resolution/Anti-resolution 0-10 SCORE 5 - (The ending shows some emotion, I guess.)
Meaning 0-10 SCORE 0 - (Sorry, there is no meaning intended in this collection of concert pieces.)
This show almost seemed like a "control group" experiment to make up for 2015 when they had Coco Chanel running around with shopping bags during Sympnony #3, an unfortunate framing device in a show theme that could have worked. (I'm not talking about the Broadway quality dancer, I'm talking about the concept itself.) It's almost like Phantom was saying in 2016, "What will our score be this year if we have no theme at all?" The vague title Voice of Promise seemed almost computer generated in an effort to mollify, confuse and sedate. It seems that the real lesson for 2016 was that building a show theme requires months of development work on theme. Theme is not a frosting that you just smear on a cake at the last minute. Whether subtle or aggressive, whether a full story or just images, whether a theme of composers or a theme referencing current events, whether it contains characters or not, the theme of the show is almost more difficult to build into a show than the arranging. Drum corps is a performance medium, and performance includes visuals with representational or evocative meaning-- movement and images that are meant to conjure, represent or evoke. But if you ignore the visual or theme component like Phantom did here, the judges have no choice but to reflect that in the score. The theme of this show was "Stuff I Wanted to Arrange."
Design shortcomings aside, these color guard performers and solo musicians are unbelievably talented, and the finals recording will be one of those classics that you listen to over and over again.

    • @channelthree6678

I find that most marching members and viewers are completely ignorant about what matters most to judges-- the thematic argument of the show. It's not "How clean your flams are." Come on, most corps by finals week have flams that are just as clean as the next guys, at least in the cluster groupings at finals. It's the show design that matters. Marching members need to have a hand in designing and owning the meaning behind their shows, not just blindly capitulate to the designers.
      1) THEME How strong is your theme or throughline in the show?
      2) PROGRESSION How does the show progress, how does the story (if any) progress?
      3) HEIGHTENING Does the theme extend, expand and heighten throughout?
      4) PATTERN Is there a recurring pattern for the audience to grab onto?
      5) ENDING Is there a satisfying ending that comments on what's come before?
      6) UNIVERAL MESSAGE What is the universal and unique meaning in the show? (This can be as simple as sometimes we want to see the fat opera singer eaten by a shark.)

Look at the clues that the Bluecoats gave you. The show coordinator said early in the season that they were working with a local dance group whose recent show was about man versus architecture. Fucking BOOM. That's all the viewer needed. He referenced a dance performance group who examined man's relationship to structures-- structures as obstacles, man's adapting to structures and structures adapting to man, fluidly, even turning a structure downside up-- a reference to the main set pieces. Now, the stage is set for the play-- we see heightened examples of using the ramp structures which impact the flow of human movement. We see two-person dance interactions where one person portrays the structure and the person cartwheels off the "structure." We see people playfully using structures to add momentum when sliding into scenarios. We see structures hiding people as they prepare to emerge. We see lovers enjoying the sights of a high altitude structure. Finally we see humans launching their equipment over a structure, in complete control and symbiosis with the structure, dancing among and moving the various architectural elements, seamlessly, as if man and building have become one, turning our preconceived notions of architecture upside down, or downside up. Finally, the performers' end stance is in the shape of the structures-- they have become one.

    What does this title mean?
What is the significance of these concert pieces together. How do they mesh?
What is the significance of carrying the female dance soloist?
What is the significance of the female trumpet soloist's pose at the end of her solo?
How are the movement or drill sets different at the end from the beginning? What's changed?
The answer to these questions about the show's theme weigh heavily on the score and placement.
