This is useful! This gives me access to Android apps in a desktop UI form. This means access to ARM apps without a Chromebook. Don't just think Word and Power Point here. Think games, movies , etc. One less device to tote around.
Groud Frank you have one? I want a personal opinion about this product. The thing is that I don't have a laptop/PC and I start college really soon. I thought that this is a nice option if I get Microsoft office. If you could tell me what do you think I would really appreciate it
Gonzalo Valdes It's worth it dude. Definitely get it for youself. I have two friends who uses Samsung DeX for college. I just finished college, but if I was still in college then I would have used it as well.
2 years ago, when continuum was announced, people were all skeptical and asking what its for. Well, its 2017 now, and I'm glad that this concept is going mainstream. We'll be seeing this in mid-range phones soon enough.
So, if you are not a heavy gamer, graphic designer or something, a cheap monitor and galaxy s8 are all that you need to make an office environment. No need to buy an another lousy laptop, chromebook or tablet. Am I right?
Instead of having a sleek laptop, nah I'm gonna bring this dex ball everywhere with keyboard mouse and monitor, not to forget a few cables in my freaking bag, oh fking yeah...
life is not fair, ubuntu phone made this idea in 2012 and no one gave a sh*t about it the phone was called Ubuntu touch, and when you connect it to monitor it gives you a full desktop experience
When heard this I expected some gimmicky tech demo but the attention to detail is incredible. As long as Samsung doesn't abandon the project (and market it properly), I can easily see this in lots of student dorms that aren't in cs or engineering.
Motrola Atrix was the first to do this as far as I know, however, Symbian was capable of doing this without a docking station (HDMI cable + mouse and keyboard) Anyways, great implementation by Samsung.
If this thing had an apple logo, OMG!! it will be the best thing ever!! it will cost $1,500 instead of $150 and people would be camping outside an apple store for weeks!!
is there any appledex ?!?! :( by the way any apple VR !?!??! can I screen mirror my iphone to smart tv !??!?!?! can I connect External hard drive to my iphone ?!??!? No !!!!!!??!?!??! then why the hell I paid 900 $ for my iphone ?!?!?!? only to take selfies in front of tge bathroom mirror and share it on Instagram ... !??!?!?!
P G I'm not an Apple user, but as far as I know you can access your external hard drives through your iPhone and you can mirror your iPhone onto a Smart TV.
Yea, that piece of shit samsung will call this revolutionary, in fact theyre just copycats, typical koreans and chinese, always copies the superior american product
no need for dex station anymore.after Oreo update you can find the switch button to choose between HDMI or Dex mode under setting-connection-more connection setting-HDMI mode
Even tough Galaxy S8 is better. Still people will buy the apple iphone 7 or the iphone 8 just due to the apple brand and the ios. Apple must step up its game this year or it might loose to Google New pixel and the galaxy s8. If samsung delivers its desktop user experience like a normal desktop or even like chromeos. I will go for an s8 for my next phone and many will :-)
Where on earth did you get 91% of global mobile profit? Samsung is number one in sales, followed by Apple, and then another 2 chinese manufacturers. Sure, not every android device is a flagship, but it sure as heck isn't only 9%.
addicz2 the note 2 just re-escalate to a bigger screen, the UI was almost the same, Dex is very very similar to Remix OS, the start menu and the task bar are identical, even the system icons look the same
I’m a Computer Science student, and I just built a powerhouse PC that will be my main system whenever I’m working on bigger projects, but I still need something I can carry around to school every day. Can I theoretically use this instead of build a cheap, crappy laptop? Can it run small PC programs like MatLab? A keyboard and mouse are pretty self explanatory, and I saw a DIY hack on how to turn a cheap tablet into an external monitor, so could I pull this off instead of buying a whole new laptop?
hmm nice concept Microsoft should do something about their continuum feature Samsung dex clearly has a big advantage here because of the Google's well developed apps ecosystem on the other hand continuum is still lagging in terms of application
So you're saying the only down side to Continuum is the app store? That's a fair argument (happy Lumia 950XL owner saying that). I want to know does the S8 need the dock or can it be plugged right into the HDMI port like Continuum allows. In 1.5 years of being able to use continuum I've only tried it out once. There isn't a compelling reason for most users to connect their phone to a screen to have a desktop experience...yet.
Edwin Capidos yup u r right my friend Microsoft is not at all concerned about windows mobile right now they r currently focused on pc,Xbox,HoloLens and enterprise market and the lack of support from OEMs is also not good but we can except things to change after they released the upcoming featured update codenamed Redstone 3 as it is rumoured that Redstone 3 will be focused on mobile
Wait did you say vmware ? I assume you will get the best performance on arm based os ? you mean I can run blender + ccx for engineering work or custom foam simulations via arm based distros? I would be interested to see if a container approach such as p-root or chroot is better ?
Ubuntu Touch did it on their phones first with Convergence years before Windows 10 implemented Continuum or Samsung created Dex! And Ubuntu Touch did it very very well even though I am not a Unity fan it worked great!
I wonder if there is something going on in the dock to make this work or if you could use any USB-C to HDMI cable, such as the one in the Nintendo Switch dock, to make this work. I have my doubts, but I think I will try it and see.
Is it possible to use the Desktop Mode without the docking station? Like with a cable and a monitor + Bluetooth periphals? That would be nice to use with a superbook!
TheBlackDeath 893 Samsung DeX doesn't have official support with the Superbook, but it does work on it. The Mirabook however has official support for Samsung DeX.
BRAVO Samsung, push innovation in your own lane, this is a beast feature that many will take advantage of this functionality. If I wasn't so tied into the Apple echo system, I would jump all into this.
honestly, and I mean fucking honestly guys. I can't tell you how many times I wished I could just plug my phone into my computer and get that extra processing power. this right here what they're doing is an actual useful feature. I have never in my life needed to 3D press the damn screen. I have never needed two cameras on the back. I have however relied on my phone as a computer because my actual computer is shit. I'm so excited for this feature. in 10 years we will just aim our phones at a TV and it will become a computer. Samsung definitely going in the right direction with this
I think Dex and the S8 will help organisations make drastic savings for hardware. Samsung is already working with windows applications so when you're buying a PC for staff who don't have the need for programmes such as Visio,Projects, SQL Excel, powerpivot etc. All you'll only need to buy is one device instead of buying a PC and a phone which can easily run Outlook, Word and Powerpoint.
do Dex can be used as wireless charging?if not connected to PC? like put the phone on it when its flat without connecting to port that's use to connect to PC
"I didn't notice any lag" "When I was typing I noticed a delay between key presses, and the text appearing onscreen" Why would you contradict yourself in a window of less than 30 seconds?
Wow, I wish they made it cross compatible with other android devices. Also wish they added USB-C so we can hookup multiple wired peripherals i.e.keyboard, mouse, printer etc. It would be very interesting what improvements they come up with next yr. Definitely keeping an eye on this tech even though I don't have a Samsung device so keeping my fingers crossed they make it where even mid-range devices and other branded phones can make use of this thing.

Rag Man Yes you can. I'm not sure what the limit is, but there is definitely a limit. I can easily access my 5TB and 10TB on it. I think the limit is way past 10TB though.
For the price of this phone you could get a very cheaply made gaming laptop that will fall apart in 2 years. KDBgames I honestly don't think it's that much. I think they should have made the price a lot cheaper. I think like $100 is a good price for it, but they went and made it $200.
This is a great idea but why not boost it, like Microsoft did before, they should totally bake it into a keyboard and backup the phone into a SSD, while docked in the keyboard. I've been using my laptop to manage my photo galleries, contacts, sms, notes and it's so much easier than the phone.

Android shooters with a keyboard aka Pc vs console. the trolling is gonna be so good :D
Filthy PC and console peasants
Glorious Android DeX masterrace
Groud Frank you have one? I want a personal opinion about this product. The thing is that I don't have a laptop/PC and I start college really soon. I thought that this is a nice option if I get Microsoft office. If you could tell me what do you think I would really appreciate it

10 more years iPhone will have this.
David Pavel you misspelt courageous
COURAGE!
And they'll tell us how they just invented a new way of using our phones.
*Nailed It*
***** what do you mean by again Galaxy S7 was best looking, best featuring and best camera mobile of 2K16
Am I right?
Younghan Bae yes
Younghan Bae Are you sure you are gonna carry a monitor around?
no I'm thinking putting a tv monitor in my spare room
Younghan Bae it's cheaper to build your own computer unless you're buying a computer and the phone
At the end of the day,,,, it's still a phone that want to be a computer.
Instead of buying a new chrome book and a new phone. I'm just going to do this
Red I will buy this one too.
Instead of having a sleek laptop, nah I'm gonna bring this dex ball everywhere with keyboard mouse and monitor, not to forget a few cables in my freaking bag, oh fking yeah...
I don't need a sleek lap top when I'm out and about. I just need a desktop at home, and the office for productivity.
ball? what the hell are you on
Mi Yu some third party could easily make a laptop that u just place your phone in
life is not fair, ubuntu phone made this idea in 2012 and no one gave a sh*t about it
the phone was called Ubuntu touch, and when you connect it to monitor it gives you a full desktop experience
Saleh M Lots of people cared about that, but they didn't do this well enough. It's nothing compared to Samsung DeX on the Galaxy S9+.
#KingIsBack Samsung Galaxy S8
rayyan hitman some third party will hopefully make 1 u just slide your phone into
Jeremy Steinberg samsung has that patent. A phone slide on a laptop
Let the S8 reign while we wait for the real beast-the Galaxy Note 8.
#TimeToLead
#ImpromptuGrenadeIsBack
apple will 'innovate' this and claim as its own..
HW Chan lol true and they will think its the greatest thing ever
HW Chan
ISheeps will clap like seals.
like nokia innovated and Samsung claimed as its own...
Shhh, facts have no place here.
First time I saw this concept in a product was the Motorola Atrix
HW Chan Great comment related to the video mr insecure about the smartphone you use
When heard this I expected some gimmicky tech demo but the attention to detail is incredible. As long as Samsung doesn't abandon the project (and market it properly), I can easily see this in lots of student dorms that aren't in cs or engineering.
Mogen Cheng Why aren't in CS or engineering? I was in CS and I have Samsung DeX.
I've always liked the idea of having a smartphone be an all in one device, so I'm glad Samsung gave it a shot. This device really is exciting
Motrola Atrix was the first to do this as far as I know, however, Symbian was capable of doing this without a docking station (HDMI cable + mouse and keyboard)
Anyways, great implementation by Samsung.
I have this at home and it is very useful it let you browse, watch youtube and use a keyboard to type messages
Fruitarian :)
so can you play mobile games that use touch controls on the mouse and keyboard setupu? Or do you have to use the phone as the controller?
Noteight Noteight You use the mouse and keyboard for games or any input device you want to use.
Looking forward to DeX and note 8 =D
simpatwork yes. And I hope Note8 can dual boot with Windows10. Haha
Looking forward to #ImpromptuGrenadeInDisguise (Second Gen) to be released
simpatwork You should definitely get it for yourself!
If this thing had an apple logo, OMG!! it will be the best thing ever!! it will cost $1,500 instead of $150 and people would be camping outside an apple store for weeks!!
is there any appledex ?!?! :(
by the way any apple VR !?!??!
can I screen mirror my iphone to smart tv !??!?!?!
can I connect External hard drive to my iphone ?!??!?
No !!!!!!??!?!??!
then why the hell I paid 900 $ for my iphone ?!?!?!?
only to take selfies in front of tge bathroom mirror and share it on Instagram ... !??!?!?!
P G I'm not an Apple user, but as far as I know you can access your external hard drives through your iPhone and you can mirror your iPhone onto a Smart TV.
This is future
this is pretty zdamn awsome!! i might have to get this for my s8 plus.
themessiah809 You definitely should!
this is great and would be the only reason for me to buy a s8. but why is this feature not more popular among the reviewers?
Stiggu LePetit Because most tech reviewers are biased towards "Real PCs".
Motorola did the dock thing with the Atrix, years ago
uh......k
Yea, that piece of shit samsung will call this revolutionary, in fact theyre just copycats, typical koreans and chinese, always copies the superior american product
Raggedy Exynos Can't tell if trolling or not...
Not long we will have dota on Samsung DeX , devs will do it...
there is a version of Android built specifically for desktop experience called Remix OS, I don't know why no one has made reference to this project
0:46 Lies. My Atrix 4G had this feature in 2011. Also the first phone with a fingerprint scanner. True innovation by Motorola.
Sorry, but the first continuum system was not Elite X3, but yes, Lumia 950/950XL
Correction: Continuum was first on the Lumia 950 and 950xl from Microsoft. Not the HP Elite.
PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4 players, step aside - Android DeX is the new champion!
Supersonic Saint Not yet, but maybe in the future.
where did you get the keyboard and the mouse. I really need one soon
Is samsung Dex also compatible with other android phones?
lyh205 Yes. It's works on S8, S8+, S9, S9+ and Note 8
no need for dex station anymore.after Oreo update you can find the switch button to choose between HDMI or Dex mode under setting-connection-more connection setting-HDMI mode
It's really good that this is on Nougat. This would not have worked well without the new Nougat APIs.
I will go for an s8 for my next phone and many will :-)
As long as they continue to make 91% of global mobile profit, Apple doesn't care what other manufacturers make. Nor do hardcore Apple users.
Where on earth did you get 91% of global mobile profit? Samsung is number one in sales, followed by Apple, and then another 2 chinese manufacturers. Sure, not every android device is a flagship, but it sure as heck isn't only 9%.
Turbojugend27 91%? That source is completely bogus, maybe in 2006, but not currently. Budget phones are much more popular.
I like how you counterargument someone by saying budget phones are more popular and their source is bogus. and don't give you're own source..
Zym3x www.idc.com/promo/smartphone-market-share/os
Now where is yours? It is common knowledge that IOS is popular, but not the majority.
It's better than continuum from Microsoft, it has multiwindow with resizeable window
It's better because it's Android and Android has 2 Million apps and nobody wants to use Windows phone.
same price?
Both are pointless options though.
Yordan Ariandy Yes, but Samsung had time to learn from the mistakes of Microsoft and Microsoft stopped working actively on theirs.
SuperK677 Haha but that was a terrible Lumia. Why didn't you get the Lumia 950?
Is this a version of Remix OS?
L. Willis looks like it but probably isnt
L. Willis they just stole the hole idea, probably
JJNLjjnl Years ago on galaxy note 2
addicz2 the note 2 just re-escalate to a bigger screen, the UI was almost the same, Dex is very very similar to Remix OS, the start menu and the task bar are identical, even the system icons look the same
L. Willis No. It's still normal Android.
But how to use the phone? I don't like hands-free or headsets. How to stay in motion with it? Can I just rip it out for a call?
Rasim Nakić Yes you can just unplug it for a call.

Drew Lakebrink the downside of continuum is the lack of hardware to support it. Samsung will sell millions of this devices.

which song on background?
I wonder if there is something going on in the dock to make this work or if you could use any USB-C to HDMI cable, such as the one in the Nintendo Switch dock, to make this work. I have my doubts, but I think I will try it and see.
Dads And Dragons There is third-party docks that you can use. So there isn't much special with it.
Would you rather buy
Dex Station or Gear VR?
honestly, and I mean fucking honestly guys. I can't tell you how many times I wished I could just plug my phone into my computer and get that extra processing power. this right here what they're doing is an actual useful feature. Can I continue to use the same session when I dock or undock? Eg start typing an email and finished it off in the dock
do Dex can be used as wireless charging?if not connected to PC? like put the phone on it when its flat without connecting to port that's use to connect to PC
I would love for phone manufacturers to try this on a laptop dock again.
Hoping Chrome OS takes some cues from DeX's strong points! This looks like they put a fair bit of effort in.
Does this work as a fast charger too when not in docking station mode?
What wireless keyboard and mouse does they use?
Please tell me...
want to play vainglory and mobile legends with this set up
GamingLaw It works great on that. I've tried it. I'm going to make videos on those two games with DeX soon also.
you can use this on a big screen TV right ?
Love your videos.
Not too shabby Samsung but did you check out the new RED iPhone color? Have you seen the Apple sticker commercials?
Does Dex work without Samsung certified fingers?
"I didn't notice any lag"
"When I was typing I noticed a delay between key presses, and the text appearing onscreen"
Why would you contradict yourself in a window of less than 30 seconds?
Wow, I wish they made it cross compatible with other android devices. Also wish they added USB-C so we can hookup multiple wired peripherals i.e.keyboard, mouse, printer etc. It would be very interesting what improvements they come up with next yr. Definitely keeping an eye on this tech even though I don't have a Samsung device so keeping my fingers crossed they make it where even mid-range devices and other branded phones can make use of this thing.
what will happen this is used as your desktop in citrix environment. i mean any vdi solution.
They should have used a cable for the DeX because I don't want to always remove my phone from its protective casing everytime I'm going to dock it.
Buy a phone that looks like a sci-fi alien device. Put a case on it and make it look like a children's toy or a wallet. Damn it!
mrkiky I'm sorry for your utter ignorance for thinking all cellphone cases look like toys. Maybe that's the case in your provincial life in whatever remote place you live in. But in where I live I have the option to use a condom case that's hardly visible. And it's what i'm using for my S7Edge.
Zed Rameses It depends on what case you're using. My S8+, S9 and S9+ case works fine with the DeX.
I switched to android 4-5 years ago. But I own Mac. I can tell that Apple has been moving toward this kind of technologies for many years now. It all started with ipads, Lauchpad on macs. They are preparing users and system for tablet/laptop experience. So it's just a matter of time when Apple show it's better way of doing this. I bet they'll do it it super smooth and sexy. Still won't by an iPhone for that. But yeah, it's our future. Communicators capable to replace laptops.
Do all apps work? Including games or just the standard apps like chrome, word etc?
jiaxing feng Almost all apps work.
Jide did that 2 months ago with android
ميتافيزيقا jide who
Atanu Raju Search For remix os or Jide Technology
ميتافيزيقا Samsung did that 5 years ago on Note 2 + smart doc
unless your a gamer and business owner, why would you buy a home computer. for me,I am seriously looking into it.
courtney Vegan I'm a gamer and a business owner. The Samsung DeX is awesome. I'm currently using it as my only computer.
Can someone please tell her that she is not talking about the OS but the UI?
what about the battery. is that make any harm to battery?
Does samsung dex work on samsung galaxy s7 edge
Should I get this or a laptop that runs on dex
is that Krystal keys voiceover?
also full W10 coming on ARM...
So you can use your TV as well with the HDMI cable?
Probably but I'm guessing it has a resolution limit like Microsoft's Continuum does. I'm more interested in learning if the dock is required or if I can plug the phone right into the HDMI port. Continuum can do that. You won't be able to charge without a dock, but it's a useful feature.
Arman M Yes
so ...only samsung phone or other phone can use this dex?
Motorola did this first in 2011 with atrix not Microsoft and actually did it better offering car, media and laptop docks...
Any ideas if this would work with a Nexus 6P which is also a USB Type-C based phone ?
iTouchTheSky18 nope
iTouchTheSky18 No. It won't. It's only for S8, S8+, S9, S9+ and Note 8
Have you tried also with Samsung Galaxy S7?
Cosmin Olaru It doesn't work on the Galaxy S7. It's only for S8, S8+, S9, S9+ and Note 8
Can T access an external hard drive? If so is there a size limit? 1T 2T etc.
Rag Man Yes you can. I'm not sure what the limit is, but there is definitely a limit. I can easily access my 5TB and 10TB on it. I think the limit is way past 10TB though.
umm isn't remix os doinv the same thing?
Vejo isso com um futuro promissor.
i was looking to enroll into online school later this year. does anyone know if this can handle everything the typical school needs?
The next hot cake technology of the market.
But do you need a Samsung display or doesn't it matter?
What about chrombooks?
kugick What about them?
can u use dex on ur old windows laptop?
yes if you can make it's screen function as an external display
but you probably won't be able to use the keyboard and touchpad
NetTV2020 you d ont need windows or tour... just a screen and keyboard... mouse
NåyeönTM Only if the laptop has support for HDMI input.
Remix OS?
Monitor model please?
can it run minesweeper on 2 GPS?
So for the price of a laptop with a discrete gpu I can buy a phone to be a weak pc! Where do I sign up for this future?
For the price of this phone you could get a very cheaply made gaming laptop that will fall apart in 2 years. Or you could get another smartphone (one of the highest quality on the market), which I'm assuming you already have..
This is the first big step in this direction. In 5 years these phones will be on par with solid laptops and with Nvidia Tegra chips. It will be interesting.
Who is Brian
Sadly the dock cost 100+ euros. Really doubt it's worth that much, you can get a small PC for that price.
KDBgames I honestly don't think it's that much. I think they should have made the price a lot cheaper. I think like $100 is a good price for it, but they went and made it $200.
Can't wait for the second generation DeX, as the first gen of everything in tech sucks :)
Edd Grs The second generation of DeX isn't a very big improvement over the first one. Although it is much welcomed.
Looks awful how you force the phone onto the port. Aren't you careful with these devices?
so BASICALLY the phone is the cpu ?
Wow it is really great~!
Samsung Dex Works in S7 flat?
Mundo Salomão No. It's only for S8, S8+, S9, S9+ and Note 8.
This is a great idea but why not boost it, like Microsoft did before, they should totally bake it into a keyboard and backup the phone into a SSD, while docked in the keyboard.
I've been using my laptop to manage my photo galleries, contacts, sms, notes and it's so much easier than the phone.
what monitor is that
Does this work on a laptop?
This will be awesome for when i use my projector in my backyard for movie night. KODI on the phone docked? Sign me up.
In another 5 years Apple's going to say new Innovative technology you can turn your iPhone into a desktop
