How to change a Smart cars spark plugs

- Hi all,
another Smart E.R. video to aid with the home DIY mechanic do a service on their beloved car. I have completed the Spark plug change in under 10 mins start to end where there are no snags or issues, such as broken Coil packs or Seized Spark plugs.
The engine here is the 1.0 non turbo kind and I believe it's the same process for the turbo version as well. The same engines for a Smart Fortwo or Forfour.
There are other videos covering a full oil change, oil filter change, air filter change and pollen/cabin filter change for you do a DIY home service.
My strongest recommendation is to avoid a cheap plug removal tool and get a fit for purpose thin walled, magnetised plug removal tool. The new rear panel design in the engine bay makes plug removal on a 453 soooo much easier than a 451.

Don't forget the anti seize on the spark plug threads.
Never used that.

Hey thanks for the video I've just been quoted £200+ to change spark plugs at Halfords. Do you have a link to the tool you use, or a size? theres a lot of options on amazon. Cheers for your help again Gareth!

What is the spark gap size for your 1.0 engine on the 453. Mine is also 1.0. Also what make and part number for the spark plugs you used. Many Thanks
NGK LZKAR7B for the plugs gap .9mm after fitting these the car is a LOT more responsive and quick to pick up. The gap on the ones removed were HUGE!

I own also own a 2016 1.0 non turbo model. Do you know if these are the same size spark plugs as the 2015 1.0 model? I live in Canada and they only stock parts for the 0.9 turbo model 2016 onwards. Quite frustrating

How often do you need to change the coil packs?
Good question. I have owned 6 smarts over ten years and never changed one. They seem to be very reliable unlike some BMW ones. Looking at some info I’ve researched it’s recommended 5-7 years or 120000 miles
How many spark plugs go into the 451?
It appears there's only three but yesterday they told me six so I purchased six

How can I find out whether my car is a 450 or 451
450 is the earliest fortwo…. Then 451 …. Latest is 453. If you look at my oldest TH-cam videos the black and red for twos are a 451. The latest videos of mine are 453 …. By process of elimination if it’s neither of those you have a 450.
